    That tink on the first hit instantly took me back to the 90s. Miss that sound of golf.
    I just switched into this millenium this year. Put my full set of 1998 Cleveland TA5 into the basement for a new set of Takomo and a new Cleveland XL2 driver. My friend had that exact driver back in 1995 and when I got my set of clevelands I was a little disappointed that it did not come with as nice of a driver. First round with new irons today. Swung the driver at course last week and could not miss a fairway.

  • @jamesbaine580
    @jamesbaine580 Před měsícem +2

    The reason you hit the tailor-made so well is because you have a great swing you're practically a tour level player. You could probably cut a hockey stick down and hit it almost as well. Us mere mortals will probably go for the larger driver head because it gives more confidence

    I'm not surprised. I'm still using my 2004 Callawav 9 degree driver. It has a smaller head (360 cc) which is just the right size for me. My golf buddies buy new drivers every year, but I'm still keeping up or out driving them. I'm sure new technologies are better and help, but it all comes down to the swing. I'm never changing my driver.

    • @TheVillest
      @TheVillest Před měsícem +1

      i'm going to go out on a limb and probably say that you are better than your buddies who are using newer technology. i mean it wasn't really all that close between the bubble and the new qi10 in this video. alex was mashing both and the qi10 was out performing the bubble by a mile lol. id bet if you had a new driver you would see improvement. i mean if there wasn't any improvement, pros would be using 30 year old stuff too lol!

    • @PaulThrossell
      @PaulThrossell Před 25 dny +1

      dont be silly, you should get a modern driver. It will increase your drives by 20 yards plus. I am a scratch level player and have Ping i3 irons, and my 3 and 5 wood are around 20 years old too, but my driver is modern. The one thing you need is a modern driver. No it does not come down to the swing. I found this out myself back in 2006, I loved my Titleist 975D driver but wanted to test it against a 905R that had just come out, so I borrowed one and tested it against my driver, around 10 yards difference on average, so I changed. Modern drivers have a much bigger difference, you are just throwing away shots if you keep using the old drivers.

    I am still using an old Cobra Zero Limits driver I think from 2009. There is something magic about the shaft/ head combination that suits me perfectly and I’ve been unable to duplicate through fittings with modern clubs. Ive had people offer me good money for it after hitting a few balls. It’s just one of those once in a lifetime things. Same with my 1992 Ping Anser2.

    Had a G15 at the local range and swapped an old guy for a yonex for a couple of shots and the prehistoric yonex was putting the balls about 40-50 yards forward. Could be COR, MRI or shaft angle but just an absolute distance monster

    I love the retro vs new driver comparisons. Please compare the Ping G15 driver with an upgraded aldila serrano x shaft. I think it will match or beat a lot of the new drivers. When the G15 came out in 2011 a lot of pros said it was by far the best driver ever tested. My son and I both still play the G15 and it's a cannon for swing speeds above 105 mph. When i was 50-52 years old I hit my alltime best 405 yard drive and many 320+ drives with a 10.5 Ping G15. Longest driver I've ever hit and very forgiving.

    @carlr2837 Před měsícem

    A year ago, I was hitting a Titleist 905T 10.5 degrees, a driver from 2005, that was a random hand-me-down club. Today I'm hitting a Ping G430 Max 10k 10.5 degrees that was custom fit to me. Both are regular flex. The claim you see made frequently is that driver distances have improved about 1 yard per year, so my expectation was that I would see about 19 yards more per drive. Have I? Here is a comparsion using ShotScope data:
    1. With the 905T, I played 95 rounds, and my "Performance Average" (which excludes bad shots) was 227, while my total average (all shots) was 200.
    2. With the G430, I have played 31 rounds, and my Performance average so far is 221 and my actual average is 195, but I think I was swinging it less aggressively at first. This month only, my "Performance Average" is 225 and actual average is 200, essentially the same at the 905T.
    I think it's safe to say that I haven't seen any massive improvement from a 19 year newer driver. In fairness, last year was a drought year, so the ground was dry, and balls rolled further, while this year has seen consistent rain, and the courses are plush and green, and balls don't roll nearly as much. Thus there is certainly some actual improvement. One of these days I'll switch back to the 905T for a few rounds, or at least, bring it along and hit a second ball with it, and get a more direct comparison.

    What is the difference in club length between the 2 drivers? I asssume the 1995 model is shorter (43 inches vs. 45 inches?). If so, installing a shaft to make the 1995 model the same length would be a fairer comparison. I assume the new driver would still hit the ball farther, but I doubt the difference would be so extreme.

    The solid Titanium face with some roll is a very forgiving thing to hit. The roll face imparts side spin to correct for mishits...and it works pretty well so you find the fairways a lot more often. I'd rather give up 15-20 yards while in the fairway than farther out but in the rough. Makes the game a little easier.

    • @alexetchesgolf
      @alexetchesgolf  Před měsícem

      Purely preference for sure on that. Stats show that 15-30 yards increase is more beneficial than finding a fairway 👍 and just to stop confusion, the roll face “corrects” spin there’s no such thing really as side spin, it’s just tilted backspin

    I still have my original 975D driver with a ProForce Gold Shaft and the static weight of it is a solid 100 grams heavier than my newish Tsi3 with a Tensei Black 1k shaft. The light weight materials used in todays tech is night and day from the old stuff. Consider as well that the original metal drivers were only fractionally better than persimmon. Better but not this massive jump forward, more like a small leap.

    Same shaft length? Same shaft? That BA Diamana is definitely gonna help out the new driver. The head itself really isn't gonna matter.
    I can't believe you can hit an 8° driver bro 😂 I just worm burn those all day all night.

    And yet retro players could still score! Go a little further back in time to the Taylor Made Burner. Smaller than your 3 wood. You get the idea how good the golf was then when you know how hard it was to hit a good shot.

      It was different. Would retro players beat modern players with the new tech - IMO, I'd confidently say not even close. It's much more athletic now

      @@alexetchesgolf yes I agree with you but if modern players had to go back in time it would be a much closer match.

      @@toneyo4794 I'd love to see one event a year where everyone had to play vintage stuff. Maybe not hickory shaft and feathery vintage, but persimmons with balatas.

      @@kristopherjames1742 yes that would be cool. I think today’s player would have a greater appreciation for players from the nineties and older.

    The Bubble just has way too many score lines creating too much spin, and a thicker face since they have developed the ability to thin out the face, and the perimeter walls as well over the decades.

      More to do with the CG and construction than the score lines. Minimal perfect that will actually have but yeah, interesting design 😂

      I wouldn’t say so. Feel the ball is the most advanced thing we have in golf

    IMO, they should have left the game alone. The ball goes too far with modern clubs. It’s made a lot of classic courses obsolete. The longer courses take more time to play and generally have higher maintenance costs that must be passed to the player. I used to play 18 holes in 3 hours as a youth and I was walking. Baseball hasn’t changed and I don’t believe cricket has changed. Just saying.
