Ok the take balls home is more of a joke at the end of the video. Not something I typically do. 😂
"typically"
I laughed so hard! Great video!
The fact that so many people missed the joke here is hilarious! Great video as always!
great video, if you can find as good a driving range. One other step would be to clean your grips once every six months or more depending on how often you use them.
Yeah sure "joke". It's a "joke" now that you've been called out for it. This was the last Mr Short Game video I'll watch.
I'd get shot if i tried smuggling an extra large bucket of golf balls into my car boot like you just did mate.
Yes, bad advice thanks for pointing that out
$30 for a bucket and short game area is insane
I have been to that range once and I will never go back. It's a joke.
Actually it seems kinda normal for the courses I've been playing recently. Where do you live? A green fee here in the KC metro is usually 45-80, and another 20 or so for a bucket. I played in Scottsdale a few months ago where a green fee was closer to $200.
10$ for a big bucket and access to the short game practice as well... Close to where I live.
@@Marke522 Equivalent of 6 dollars for 50 balls, maybe 8 if they have Toptracer or Trackman. Never been to any course here in Sweden where the short game are isn't free. 22 dollars for a bucket seems borderline illegal.
Tip #13.. after working with specific clubs or whatever you hit with on the range.. save about 20 or so balls and at then visualize playing a couple of holes that you know/remember well.. setup.. pre shot your drive.. hit.. based on the flight/landing pretend you are there now for the next shot.. pre shot routine..hit etc.. play 2, 3, 4, etc holes. Range practice with specific clubs is fine… but remember that on the real course you’re not hitting your driver or 7 iron 10-15 times in a row…
I knew the second u said take the balls with you. People were going to lose their minds! 😂 So predictable! Love your videos!!!
1. wear your golf shoes. 2. go to short game area first, if range has one. 3. have a practice plan . ie spend a lot of time in the bunker, if they have one, 4. practice putting have a plan for practicing pitting never use range balls for putting. USE YOUR REAL GOLF BALLS 5. tap putter on green every time you sink a putt. becomes positive reinforcement. 6. do not wear ear phones while practicing. 7. don't need largest size bucket 8. choose different spot on driving range every time 9. if possible, move mat towards target 10. look for free range balls 11. always work your wedges, wear it out. bonus: always clean your grooves. Secret: you might not view "borrowing range balls until next time" but the driving range does view it as stealing.
Thanks for doing the lord work
Check ✅️ on every point.
No mats, always grass.
Thanks!!
30 bucks for a range session?!?! Fuck that. $14 for a large bucket here in Ohio with free short range practice.
I pay $30/mo for a range pass at my course. It’s not nearly as nice as that place, but I like not concerning myself with the cost when I go practice. It also motivates me to not let it go to waste. Plus, when I go out to play, I can grab warmup bucket, hit a few and not be concerned, again, with the cost. Our green fees are also part of the membership. Small town life!
3 miles down the road from this facility in San Diego you can get the same deal for $45/mo, plus a discount on rounds and drinks with preferred tee times
This place is seriously nice and in the middle of a high $$ valley, the price is high but it is premium. I sometimes go there for the batting cages
Most public ranges have some portion of balls that are in crap condition (warn dimples, cuts, etc.). My tips: 1) Don't hit the crap balls as the flight can give you misleading information. 2) If you do hit the crap balls, use them on your shorter clubs where ball flight is shorter. Save the best balls for your longer clubs. If a ball is really trashed with big cuts, throw it in the trash on your way out. You'll be doing the range and future guests a favor.
There's a couple of good tips, but honestly, the biggest tip on the practice is to do your full preroutine on each balls... tips given by bob rotella... he mentionned that 80% of your shot happen in the preroutine and you should train it to be confident
one hunj
Matt, I just want to thank you for fixing my cupped left wrist. I had to square the club face and still got to a 5 handicap but now I'm confident that I'll lower it. Hope to meet and thank you personally one day. You're the best!
Loved everything about the video.
No Earbuds- Check
Different Bays- Check
Short Game- Check
Wedges- Check
Taking Balls with You- ABSOLUTELY NOT
I all appreciate how generous you are when you travel and the effort you put into making every video.
But taking range balls and leaving.
That will get you banned at ranges around this area.
It’s just a bad look.
And the reason is that if 10 people does that every day, that range ball dispenser run out of balls QUICK and contrary to popular beleif, those balls are nowhere near free for the facility. When thousands of balls "go missing" guess what happens to the prices for using the driving range?
It was a joke. Relax Linda.
It was a joke not a dick. Don’t take it so hard.
lol if you have the money to play golf but not spend $60 of 50 golf balls... you need help
Tip no.12 stop hitting on mats!!!!!!! They are very deceiving and do not replicate a real shot!
It truly depends in what your practice session is planned around. For example if ur looking to work on working the ball, then it dont matter much. Some intentions of practice need grass such as compression since how divots are taken matter
@@breakthrough8628 well for new golfers you should never use mats let's go that far. I know someone who goes to the range and uses mats and will say "oh I'm hitting so good" then gets to the course and hits them fat!
If you have the option, hit off of grass. Mats do a great job of masking where the bottom of your swing really is.
@@ryanburd3140 that’s definitely me.. unfortunately 🤣, but working to curb that by playing the course more. Might be worth the extra 15 minutes to get to a natural grass range. But gas prices here in Cali 🤯
yall must be really lucky to live in some nice places in the winter if you can hit off grass 365 days a year...
Maybe tip number *11 should be “Pass on the good golf practice vibes by leaving the free golf balls you found at the range.” 😂
I usually take those home w me. Lol
@@breakthrough8628my range just upped the prices of buckets because everyone takes home balls
I couldn't help but laugh. One range by me has signs posted saying taking range balls home is stealing and will prosecute. That's why I get the small bucket and search for the donations. LOL
Evidently some don't realize the comment about taking the range balls was sarcasm and intended to get more comments in this comment section. Worked like a charm! Lol!
Great video!
He was not joking. He even said he got tired and paid for it. When it's a joke he would be so specific
@@CARPital Lol! That;s the frigging sarcasm dude as that is the excuse people use to justify taking the balls home with them. But whatever you want to think......
Before hitting the range, where you can't retrieve the balls, always use your bucket of balls for chipping practice first.
I know a few guys at my local range that will hit the range balls into the practice net for a good while, then hit them out into the range, such a great cheat code, they'll be fully warmed up, they work on their body motion first, then and get twice the ball strikes for ya £££'s.
Yeah, I always start from my lowest wedge to warm up. I then go through every club in the bag starting from my 60 wedge to the driver. After that, I pretend to play a hole. Starting from driver, maybe a wood or long iron, then a hundred yard club, to a wedge. Then repeat using different clubs each time.
@edlo8099 That is such a good tip. The pitching green is right beside the range where I go. There's never anyone on it either. I could pitch and chip a whole bucket. To warm up for my driver.
I just use my own balls on the chipping area, as mentioned in this video, better to use the balls you're actually going to use on the course for the short game...not like you're going to lose them chipping (hopefully).
@@Sarconthewolf I have the same exact routine. 👍
Who likes being on the driving range when the group next to you shows up and starts behaving like they came there to chit chat instead of practice? As if you don't have enough swing thoughts to deal with.
I haven’t been home to San Diego for awhile (Fry’s was still open and The Murph still standing when I left). I see the range grass conditions could use some love.
You should come to Las Vegas and do a series one at Angel Park, right next door is the TPC Las Vegas and paiute with 54 holes along with new hitting ranges atomic golf, top golf and many more courses
Great video man, loved every moment of it. At my range their is a security guy, to make sure you do not leave with any of the range property, you can get shot for stealing range equipment 😂😂😂😂
As someone that works at a driving range, unfortunately too many out there think as you joked. But it is theft. Our range allows you to put your name on a note any we will hold your in hit partial bucket behind the counter for up to a week so you can hit them later. If you are caught taking range balls and or baskets you will not only be asked to leave but also no longer welcome at our facility. The same goes for bringing another ranges balls to ours. Trust me we know who is doing it and have asked people to leave because of it. You are renting the balls to be hit on our range and also paying for use and upkeep of the facility, equipment and wages for staff.
Don't steal the balls please... we need them at the range to use!
I appreciate you making a video like this. Always trying to improve and maximize my range time.
Good basic & simple tips! Thanks for your knowledge.
We have a range that is also a par 3/4 course. The first original holes are all par 3. The additional holes were made par 4. I hit my driver at the range and work my short game on the course. $11 for 9 holes is a good deal. 175 yard par 3s, and 375 yard par 4 to finish, with many raised tees and greens. Used to be an old farm.
I worked on chipping in my yard. My goal was to get the balls over the driveway. I think it made me good around the green.
I have been watching many years and always enjoy MSG. I liked seeing him at the Good-Good Cup, or at the Golf Shows, or whatever.
Golf is not just technique it's also where your head is at, and MSG's is in the right place.
Have a plan, have a good attitude, and practice. Putting. chipping, practice is key, not just 10 minutes prior to a round.
I can't tell you how many times people say, "what time are you out," when I'm on the practice putting green.
"It's a practice day," is my answer, sometimes.
If you are time constrained an hour on the greens is worth more than a round of golf, especially for putting.
Difficult if you don't have the time, but if you do it will really pay off.
Also maintain equanimity of mind on the course. Don't get too high over good shots or too low over bad ones.
Needed this - thanks!

I do an hour on the chips and a small bucket on full swings. I dont hit a lot of greens but man can I scramble and save par. Averaging 75 right now at 59 yo.
Love this video! I grind lunch buckets every day I’m in the office and having a plan before I go every time is so important. Great video as always!
Doing same routine as yours. I also don't leave range balls. I practice 3-4x a week and when I took some range balls home, I bring them back. 😊
Thank you, great job! I love it
Good tips. I would also add sometimes it's fun to play imaginary golf holes so you get used to switching from driver to irons and wedges better.
Thats an absolute must. Along w defining boundaries apx width pf fairway etc
Nice tips Matt. Played golf for 30 years and still learn some nice nuggets from other serious players.
Happy to know that I already do all this. Probably why I've seen improvement over these last 3 years.
Excellent tips my friend!
One more tip. When I go to the range one thing I always do is practice my preshot routine. I do it on every shot on the course, and you need to practice it at the range.
Dam it’s expensive out there ! 22 bucks for balls that’s a greens fee here !
$10 for members to ride 18 at my course here in middle ga.
Never would have guessed that StadiumGolf off the 15 was a top 10 range in the country. Always good seeing you back home in the motherland, MSG
What I remember about the short game area is I could exit, hit an eagle basket on the range and reenter to continue practicing my short game. I'm not sure if that has changed.
Thanks for the range tips.
Love seeing the San Diego Mr. Short Game videos.
Great video! Thanks for reminding me to move to another bay where I'm not comfortable, and also for reminding me to use my shoes on range day.
Not so sure about taking the remaining balls away to come back another time. I know that would not go down well at the Ranges I frequent.
Maybe it's different in the US???
Yeah, you can't take them home. It's called stealing.
Im struggling to figure out why this place is top 10 in the country. My local range has all these amenities and more, at more than half the price.
Extra $8 for short game facility? Wild!
I knew you were coming in hard with the earbuds. Always cracks me up seeing those guys. I guess if they played on the course with them then it would be fine, but so true hearing the contact, but mainly you aren't going to use them on the course. Glad you brought that up.
Getting rid of earbuds, good idea. Getting rid of loud speakers while playing a round, even better.
I can’t stand “loud music guy!”
You can listen to music any other time. Does it have to come to the golf course where it’s just nice for a little bit of nature surrounded by quiet?!
Doing lessons with a pro a few weeks now and everything the pro thought me this guy just laid out … awesome video man …!
since its just about peak of golf season, most ranges are packed full of patrons. makes me truly happy. BUT it means you almost always dont have a choice in hitting bays. just be creative at what you have to work with :) purposeful practice is key
Loved the car tip. My range has mats that don't move but I've been using the home depot alignment stick 😄
It's a shame how few ranges have grass tees now though.
The knowledge share is priceless and your entertainment / delivery is the bonus! :)
Possibly your best video! Immensely helpful. Having a plan for practice is second only to planning your strategy for a hole.
Tip No.1 Move house to be near a range with short game and bunkers (i.e. nowhere in the UK)
You got me with the earbuds. Thank you and I often see "Old-timers" with grocery bags of balls! lol
Try the Murrieta Driving Range, where Rickey Fowler learned. He recently bought the range. All grass hitting areas, short game area, bunker area, and great putting green. Murrieta is only about an hour north of San Diego.
Love stadium golf but the problem is getting bays. Sometimes always SO crowded. If you’re still in SD I’d love to take out for a round at Steele Canyon, my treat.
Good thing you clarified the ball home issue .... love your video's keep them coming!!!!
- Stretch before you swing
- Don't dump all the balls in the tray and hit, hit, hit. Just take 3 balls out of the bucket. After each 3 think about it then hit 3 more
- Don't use the same club over and over. Mix it up. You don't hit the same club over and over at the course.
Never understood that last one. I am working on my swing. Working on the club path to stop over the top swings. In any sport practice until it is muscle memory. Why would I not be using the same club and making multiple swings in a row until I get that feel with the right flight? The point of the range is to practice. Whatever you need to practice should be the focus. Generalized rules do not make much sense to me.
That’s a great golf range, and great tips many thanks.
I generally dedicate my practise session for one specific part of my game. Bunker practise coming up, 2 hours grinding on the beach. It's the only way to really engrain the muscle memory. Oh, and dang right about the music. In putting, I concentrate on pace. First, I go through my putting swing for 5 min, then just pace. I do the TW method, visualizing the roll of the ball thereby feeling the pace and then looking at the ball while still looking at the roll of the ball in my head. My body does the rest. No music, for sure.
Ordered 2 belts. Thank you for the discount code MSG!
I bought the same black Vessel golf bag earlier this summer. I was looking for a luxury carry bag, and I found it!
I got a chuckle out of that. Good commentary .⛳ Thank you
That place is where I go for a practice !
Happy to see this place in your vid.
My local range is great. It has ball tracking and a free chipping green with a small bunker that you can use your own balls on.
i was just there yesterday. they have trackman screens you can rent too
Great seeing back at home brah!
I love your vibes and and humor. We gotta golf sometime
I practice two putting and that has helped me immensely. I take 3 balls, and when i put a ball in play, it is live until it is in the hole.
The best advise..
WOW, I thought I was the only one that taps the putter on the ground when one of my 5+ foot putts goes in! I even find myself doing it when practice putting at home!
Do not take those range balls home!🤣🤣
I get 90-100 golf balls for $10 at my range, and I’ve never left any behind.
All of the other tips are useful, and thanks for those! I’ll need to develop a better plan!
Whats ur handicap?
70 balls is $14 at my local range 😢🤬
Love the belt. What model nexbelt are you wearing?
funny you mention cleaning the grooves, I do it after every shot with my irons if needed while on the course, and it bugs the crap out of my golf buddy...lol
I go to that range every week. It would have been cool to see you there.
$22 for a bucket of balls is criminal. Then $8 for the short game area on top of that. Wow
He IS in San Diego….ain’t nothing cheap anywhere near there.
$13-$15 for big bucket at my ranges in ohio.
Commiefornia prices
Was going to say the range near me charges $15 for a bucket and I thought THAT was a ripoff, and their short game area is free. Never heard of a place charging for using the putting and chipping green.
Right down the road at Tecolote Canyon you can get a bucket of range balls a day for $45 a month. If you want to go to a top 10 driving range in the middle of a tourist city, you are gonna pay for it and if you want to play golf at a nice course, it is going to cost you $$ no matter where you go. Try getting a tee time at Augusta.
I live in Florida and understand people come here to go on vacation and I get it and we benefit as a state for that. I don't get where playing load music, smoking big cigars, and drinking until you can't hit the ball comes from. Just enjoy being outside and the golf course. Listen to your strike. You can get better just by relaxing a bit.
put 3rd round of 2023 Brit Open on pause just to watch this. And well worth it, got several useful ideas. But, as Comrade Stalin said at the 34th Party Congress, "better fewer, but better....(tho he wasn't talking about golf balls....): I get a 33-ball bucket for $3, hit my off-tee driving clubs (20 degree 3X, 17 degree 4X, 1-iron 3X) first; then long fairway clubs (18-degree/21 degree TM Rescues 3X each from mat); then 3,4,6,7,8,9 irons 2X each from mat. Last 5 or six balls back to the tee clubs. Got a c. 100 yard deep back yard, so the wedges get hit at home. Local golf course is pretty rough (see Mr. Short Game's "" I play America's worst golf courses" vids) but it does have a very nice free short game practice area.
At certain practice facilities I put the range balls in the car because you park next to the grass area which is 100 yards from the range office.
Hey Matt, there are a few things you forgot to mention. 1. Never go to a driving range that has mats. A golf course is grass and mats screw up your game because you have to swing differently because you can't hit down and take a divot on a mat. 2. Hole 5 bunker shots before moving on (learned that from Gary Player on a Playing Lessons from the Pros with Gary Player on the Golf Channel). 3. Hole 10 chips before moving on. 3. Get some friends and play horse in the chipping area and try to come up with ridiculously difficult shots for each other such as hitting flop shots over 30 foot trees, hitting shots through the "Y" in the branches of a well groomed tree, hit shots from a buried lie in the bunker where you can barely see the top of the ball. 4. Use your own balls for chipping and putting (very, very important) 5. The best thing I ever did is play in a Friday afternoon skins game with 10-12 of us in one group. Anything goes. You could talk, yell, scream, throw tees at the guy hitting, talk a little s*it. It totally desensitizes you to the external things around you. Now when I'm playing golf, someone will apologize for talking in my backswing. I tell them, don't worry about it, I didn't even notice. Those are 5 ways to get seriously focused and become a better golfer.
"hole 5 bunker shots". No I'd be there all day. Let's all do what Tiger did at the 2006(?) Open.....72 holes, no bunkers.
I love matts, never hit a bad shot.
😂😂😂 also doesn't translate as well to the course. Always hit from the grass.
@@BlackWat3rGTRunfortunately that’s not always possible
They can make that facility better by having different sand in different bunkers and have a fairway bunker option as well.
I have noticed at my local range the mats have bumps and ridges. Is it normal for a mat not to be flat and not have much give?
Agreed to take any balls you don't use as long as you go back to the same range. ALSO, xtra-xtra-tip: take any non-range balls that wind up in your bucket. I always find 2 or 3 'like new' ProVs, Callaway, Srixon, etc in the bucket that somehow, someone shot on the range. Literally don't think I've purchased a new ball in over 4 years.
Nice to see you in SD!
Don't know why your not at a million subs. your videos are great and they have really improved my game.
You scared me when you said put in ear buds! I do war my golf shoes and whatever attire I am wearing at the course. Near me is a turf driving range and I spend hours at the chipping ,pitching , and sand area.
how about a worst golf course review in Murrieta, ca at the California oaks golf club ill buy the round.
my local spot, has the short game area for free. went there few dayts ago, got a few buckets for the range and then played on the short game area for like 2 hours for free. putting and chipping
great stuff.
Used to live and Tierrasanta and hit that place all the time…Unless that place has been refurbished in the last 5 years (meaning a complete overhaul - which it doesn’t look like it), it ain’t a top driving range…It’s average at best…no natural grass on the range (and barely any out on the range), mats are ratty, grass is a bit spotty in the short game area and it’s not that big (gets crowded) that said, all excellent tips! I don’t always move, but I often do when it’s windy. Best tip for free balls…show up at the range early on the weekend….all the dew sweepers get a bucket, hit 5 balls and their tee time is up….Not a fan of taking balls…many ranges aren’t fans either….no real reason for it…unless something happens after you got them…work called, injury, emergency…as for the bag loading, reason #2 to load that way, if you hit the breaks, your clubs don’t become javelins at you in the front!!! FWIW, I used to take lessons in that exact stall on the second deck you hit from first!
The golf course is my driving range, play a minimum of 18 holes every day but normally 27 holes every day Monday - Friday and a minimum of 36 holes on Saturday and Sunday but typically 45 holes.
Agreed short game is needed on every single hole you can score good with a mediocre long and mid game with a good short game.
Good advice - particularly around the short game and earbuds. One more that others have already mentioned is do your proper pre shot routine each time. Practice should replicate the course as much as possible. And of course the obvious one - don't get on the range and immediately take the driver out of the bag. Leave it alone! Until the end of the session.
Wish there was a range around here that had even a chipping green ,asking for sand trap aint gonna happen…there are a few chipping green ones but theyre usually at courses that have a range too
Not only do we not have a short game area at our driving range which is the closest within a couple hours, But half the balls at the range are probably from a time when Arnold Palmer was a rookie... Wish I had a facility like that near me I would live at the short game area
reason why i ALWAYS get the biggest bucket of range balls = usually the best deal per ball. Golf is already expensive. Keep the efficient mindset of hitting only a certain number of balls at a time. And usually i'll have half or a quarter bucket left, youll be surprised at how many new friends you can make at the range by simply offering it to your next bay neighbor 💪
Become a member of a good private club, i get all the free balls i want for only $35,000 per year. Lol. True story
Dear Mr. short game a quick question for some reason when I play golf by myself, I always break par but when I play with others, I’m about a 12 to 14 handicap. Any thoughts? Lol
Stop playing alone and put some cash on the line. Pressure will make you better.
I would drive extra minutes to go to a range that doesn't have those nasty mats. You don't get good feedback on mats. In the summer here in Florida most of the sand traps, including on the fairways, are like hitting on concrete.
