    Good luck to all the choirs in Kaintuck!! (This is NOT an easy piece...)

    I understand. Kentucky's all-state choir is using this piece for their auditions, and the edition I'm using has that pronunciation I mentioned underneath the notes. It's interesting that there's many different versions of these old songs. Thanks for the reply. And thanks for this video. Also, people saying that you're not a bass or soprano are out their minds. You're amazing.

    John - thanks for this video. I'm a choral director in Kentucky, where we're all apparently using your video to prepare for all-state auditions :) I wonder about the alto part at the text "in aeternum". In your version the alto line is G - F - A - G - G; however, our score shows F - E - A - G - G (first two notes different). I worry that your version breaks a lot of "rules" of 16th C counterpoint. Mistake, or is yours a different version?

  • @ioannium
    @ioannium  Před 11 lety

    It's actually not a mistake. It's a late Renaissance piece, meaning text underlay depends on the manuscript you're using. Text underlay on these largely depends on the edition you're using. You're obviously using a different edition. ;-)

    I'm in varsity choir and we have to sing this for all-state and I don't know if I can do it I'm a soprano and we have to sing this in the Greek words..... Honestly might just not do it

  • @ThomasHermJr
    @ThomasHermJr Před 11 lety

    The song is amazing but I feel as though, in this performance, the bass is strongly overpowered; I realize this is more-or-less how it's suppose to be; but, for people learning their part, it makes it harder. I'm a tenor, and I find it hard to find my ins and outs because of it's more background than front. Could you make videos going over each part, specifically?

  • @RevolvingC
    @RevolvingC Před 10 lety

    This is beautiful. But why all the requests for seperate parts to learn from? Surely having the music in front of you and either a piano or listening to this with the notes is enough? If reading is an issue, the best way to improve it is to practice. Find random pieces on websites like CPDL, and sing along to a recording. That way there is then no need to be reliant on a part specific recording :)

    You guys shouldn't give up on auditioning for all-state just because it's in a different language. Even when you make all-state, most of the pieces they perform are in different languages. In plus, Latin is (in my opinion) one of the easiest languages to sing in.

  • @ioannium
    @ioannium  Před 11 lety

    Greek? Do you mean Latin, or has someone found a translation that's been lost to musicology? :-)

  • @adultswim105
    @adultswim105 Před 11 lety

    almost everyone here is watching this for all-state, I suppose. Good singing, but you messed up on the bass part: the first use of the word "gratia" in the bassline is not gra-a-ti-a, it's gra-ti-a-a.
