    JB, your enthusiasm and excitement about your plans is great to see. I love this time of year for a number of reasons but in relation to my allotment the enjoyment of planning what you might want to grow next year, buying seeds, cleaning all the pots, seed trays, cell trays and so on is just so enjoyable. Looking through my notes made during the season and my books helps me to plan and decide whether I might try a different method for growing a certain vegetable, building on the knowledge we acquire year on year. Thank you for sharing your update. Paul

    Might I suggest you buy the boards that are used for patio's,, they are already pressure treated and last much longer than untreated wood (even lined) and I've found them much cheaper than scaffold boards,, you can also use them 2 high with a strip of wood holding them together.

    You said 1.8m was unusual but that is what I get as they are the perfect size for a raised bed. 1.8 x .9m Mr Fothergills about £40. Ps. Trim the plasticJB, it’s driving me nuts!!

  • @valeriepritchard677

    Much easier to pick one standard size bed. Then covers and nets are interchangeable.

    • @JBNat
      @JBNat  Před 9 měsíci

      Yeah that's why I think I'm mostly going to standardise to 1.2 x 2.4. Then the bigger beds which are 1.2 x 3.6, at least if I make any structures to top them the structures can just sit inside the bed :)

    I think you should have called this episode "The one with the lost tape measure" a la Friends style. Hilarious. I have that most days with keys and today my phone 🤦‍♀
    I would have our Christmas decs up now too given half the chance hubby is a bit of a bah humbug and we spend about three weeks "discussing" where I will put everything and then its suddenly two weeks before Christmas! However the outside lights are on so I get a cheerful welcome returning home in the dark from work!!
    At the beginning of lockdown when I started back in to veg growing again. Hubby built me several more beds from scaffold boards, all we could get at the time. We bought new ones that were classed as slight seconds, so they hadn't been used but were not perfect. They have been so good. No signs of rot and still holding firm.
    Gonna try vegplotter I am rubbish spatially and alway send up wandering about deciding where to put stuff and either have too much to plant or gaps and spaces with nothing in. Perhaps that will help get me organised.
    I have never tried root trainers before, I bought some from container wise last year that are really sturdy (much more expensive) and they are ok, but I like the idea that you can take those ones you were sent apart and not damage the roots.
    What a lovely care package, like Christmas come early .... eh Jess? ☺😉

    • @JBNat
      @JBNat  Před 9 měsíci

      When it comes to the Christmas decorations you just have to wait for him to leave the house and then when he returns it's halfway done and now he needs to help you 😂 are you happy with the beds? I hope so because I've done the exact same thing, found slight seconds which are due to be delivered Tuesday 😁
      I have some of those deep rooted Containerwise ones too. Used them for peas I think. They can be really difficult to get the plant out of!

    Great content, so funny you are, obviously so much going on in your head , you flit from one thing to the next very quickly! 😅. The veg plotter I’m going to take a look at that, I want to transform our lawn area into veg areas as well as keeping my flower areas. do not want to take away the garden look whilst growing food, it’s hard to know where to start with the planning😮
    We all get excited when we see the seed packets can’t wait for seed sowing time!
    oh by the way the root trainers I ordered after seeing Tony’s video, I have sweet peas already established autumn sown for planting out next year, followed Zoe Woodward sweet peas if sown autumn over winter in the greenhouse produce much longer stems for cut flower displays the flower petals are much bigger too!

    As my plot is still flooded (since 25th oct) I’m in full planning mode, I’m also making raised beds, when I can see the soil again but I’m using decking boards 2.4 m long which I can cut in half for the 1.2m sides. Looking forward to seeing how you get on. I also have some pallet collars (husbands work for free🎉) which I am planning on using for a cut flower beds next year 😀

    • @JBNat
      @JBNat  Před 9 měsíci

      Oh no!!! Still flooded!! That is so unfortunate Marie. I hope it clears soon. Decking is great because of the thickness of the wood! Bit expensive round my way though.

    Hi JB
    Chase the tape had me in stiches
    - love the planning website
    - having regular sized beds will make building cages etc much more versatile and adaptable
    - in the poly tunnel a set of shelves to store things close to hand. Having a dedicated potting area in the poly tunnel will also mean labeling will be easier as everything will be in one place, pens, labels, pea sticks, twine etc
    - some small hand tools could be stored in a 'cleaning tidy' tray and stored in the more secure shed
    - tools never in the right place but don't want to double up i use a small bag for life which gets transported wherever. Then as you think I'll need that at ..... Pop it in the bag as you can guarantee trying to remember as you leave the house/plot items will get left behind
    - the grape, on that side of the poly tunnel will it not cast too much shade or is that the intension.... just a thought before it gets established
    Loving the developments on your plot 😁👍

    • @JBNat
      @JBNat  Před 9 měsíci

      Hahahaha 'chase the tape', love that. Cages etc is one of the reasons I wanted to keep the beds similar sizes :) totally agree on the rest!
      The idea with that little grape is to pamper it a little in the tunnel this next year and find out if the grapes are any good, and then maybe move it or take cuttings if I like it 😊 good spot!

    Still watching.. tape measure-gate cracking me up but wanted to say I’m going to do a video on my planning soon.
    We buy in 4.8m lengths and make all beds in lengths that divide in to those measurements too
    Most are 2.4 x 1.2 but a few are 3.6 x 1.2 ( next to the fruit cage).
    We did a lovely plan tracing over a drone image in photoshop. It’s going to be in a video in a few days

    • @JBNat
      @JBNat  Před 9 měsíci

      Selvans timber in Portsmouth has done me good a few times recently. I've ordered some reject stuff from edecks.com for the first plot, and found a local guy with used scaff boards for £12 a pop locally (for 13ft boards!)

  • @kentgaminguk9090
    @kentgaminguk9090 Před 9 měsíci

    JB, why don’t you use decking boards rather than scaffold? Much cheaper and already treated. Wickes were selling 8ft pieces for £6 a few weeks ago

    • @JBNat
      @JBNat  Před 9 měsíci

      Hiya! Thanks for the suggestion, I was looking at decking. One of the nice things about it is the thickness, so it has decent rot resistance. But the issue is the height. Two decking boards on top of each other are shorter than one scaff board. Currently at wickes one 3.6m length of decking is £16!
