I was there. My dad played lead guitar for him for 20 years. I grew up calling Ray grandpa. It shamed me that none of the Cherokee Cowboys was asked to play at the tribute or the funeral. Ray will be missed very much. I loved him so much that i cant explain. I have many memories of traveling with him and my dad on the road. I learned so much from him. Please keep Cliff in your prayers. He is hurting bad from all of this.
    Best Regards,
    Gary D. Jones Jr.
Son of an official Cherokee Cowboy.

A truly great Country Western Music legends has passed away, Ray had such a graceful and clear voice! My favorite sung has been and will always be For the Good Times! There never be another singer with such mellow voice. R.I.P. Ray

I'm an old buzzard 79 years old. I got hooked on Ray Price when I was in high school at 16 years old. In those days our dates curfew was 10:30pm. So we double dated all the time. My good buddy Jerry & I would go to a cafe after our dates , eat red chile enchiladas, play pool
and play the juke box. I must have spent $100 on Rays' City Lights at 6 plays for a quarter. To this day that is my all time favorite song by my all time favorite artist. I was lucky enough to see Ray in concert after missing him in concert for 4 different times . I got an autographed ball cap and t-shirt at that concert. What a gentleman ! I guess that might make his oldest "groupie" in my 60's. RIP , Ray. You truly defined what country music should be !!

I recently watched the 4 part Series of Mr.Price on "Family Countrys Reunion" on RFDTV. And it absolutely superb. His Voice Control was as Good as it was 55 years ago. Absolutely "Perfect". This lawyer is probably one of the last honest lawyers left in America. A Christian lawyer? Say it ain't so! Wonderful speech on behalf of the honorable Ray Price. Ray was a gentleman right up to the end of THIS life and stood proud as he entered the Kingdom of Heaven. I saw Ray the last time when he was 81 in Poteet, Texas at the Strawberry Festival. There wasn't a dry eye in the house as everyone saw just how great this man was. He was unreal, almost spiritual. Old cowboys took off their hats while their wives dabbled at their eyes with hankies. It was like a church service with beer and BBQ. Funny at the time, but so moving and it was a day I'll never forget. As a musician of 40 plus years, I can tell you no one and I mean no one can sing like Mr. Ray Price.

I first saw Ray at the Cowtown auditorium in the stockyards Ft Worth around 53 or 54. I have always liked his music & I played drums at different Bars on Exchange St. & I loved the 2/4 shuffle beat to his music. I moved to Mt Pleasant in 2008 & working at Walmart as a greeter I saw Ray often as he came to shop until the times that he was weakening.

  • @KLUNKET

I wish I had been able to attend this service. I am nobody to Ray Price, other than just another one of millions of people who loved him. I consider myself very fortunate that I did have the opportunity to meet him briefly a few times. It has been over a year now since Ray has passed away and I still have trouble believing it.
I have a brief Ray Price story that really sums up who Ray Price the man was to me. Years ago I took my wife to see Ray for our anniversary. I had seen Ray many times before, but this time I had gotten the idea to ask if Ray Price could sing the song "The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me" for my wife on our anniversary. I thought that would be the greatest gift to my lovely wife that would just mean the world to her...
We came early to the show, and I was able to talk my wife in to going to the bathroom by stating "if you go now you wont have to go during the show!" So she ran off to the bathroom.
I just wanted rid of her long enough to try and give her a REAL surprise! While she was in the bathroom I mustered up all of my courage and approached someone in Ray's entourage and asked them if they could ask Ray Price to sing the song "The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me" as a surprise for my wife on our anniversary. The person was short with me and shut me down pretty quickly by rolling his eyes and saying "Ray doesn't do requests or dedications" and walked away from me.
I regretted bothering Ray's employee as I thought I had upset him or bothered him. I was sad obviously, but was still excited to see Ray as always. Unbeknownst to me Ray Price had been in the other room just a few feet from where I had approached his employee, he had been doing an interview with a radio announcer and he must have overheard my request. As I was walking away through the crowd of people to go and find my wife someone tapped my shoulder and said "excuse me"... I turned around and it was Ray Price! I was nearly speechless... He said "what is your wife's name son?" I told him... he then shook my hand, smiled and said "thanks for coming out tonight". Then he walked back into the room he had been in stopping briefly for a picture or two for folks in the crowd that were obviously excited to see him in person.
I didn't say a word to my wife about it even though I was dying to tell her of my encounter. During the show he did the song and told the audience that it was our anniversary and we stood up briefly as everyone clapped for us. She was so excited that she cried hysterically!! After the show Ray sat at an autograph booth and we waited at the end of the line to see him. She could barely speak (as she was starstruck) but managed to say "thank you so much for that Mr. Price, it meant a lot"... He stood up and put his arm around her and said "Awww, I was happy to do it honey", and hugged and kissed her on the cheek! He wished us a happy anniversary. She floated on a cloud for months after that!
My wife (TO THIS DAY) tells everybody she knows that story!!! I wonder if Ray really knew how much it truly meant to her? That brief moment of his time gave her an unforgettable, magical memory to last a lifetime! Maybe it is true that Ray didn't normally do requests or dedications, so I'm not sure why he decided to do it for us that night. All I do know is that his kindness meant the world to us. We love you Ray Price- always have, always will. You meant so much to so many people. Thank you for the music and the memories my friend...

KLUNKET What a great story to tell your grandkids. Ray Price was the true Texas gentleman. When I saw him in 2007, there wasn't a dry eye in the house at the sound of a man who will go down as one of the top three SINGERS of all time.

Looking at this turnout is terribly sad, but not surprising, considering, Mr. Price was not your typical Media seeker, nor party animal...and if you know this industry at all, when you're hot, you're hot, and when you're not, you're out; and really, who wants a bunch of phonies putting on the ritz. With that said, if I understand correctly, Mr. Price is in a much better place by the grace of His Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ...amen for that! RIP, Ray Price...and your voice will certainly live on until we are no more.

I could not have said it better. I've been in the music business for 40 years and it's a fickle business BUT it had a few who were above the business by virtue of their personal greatness. Ray Price was one of them. I last saw him in Texas when he was still doing county fairs and the like. He was 81. And still put all these no shows to shame. The country artists of today don't have enough talent to carry Ray Price's dime store coat. RIP Mr. Price. You lived a remarkable life few will ever have the honor to live.

He later apologized for the comment saying he meant no disrespect to Ray Price when in fact he was a fan himself and had even met Ray Price and talked with him and often joked saying that he was an old fart so he meant no harm or at least Ray Price knew that RIP...RIH

I understood that Ray's widow, janie had something to do with Cliff not being involved in the services! That's a shame to. I know Ray would not approve the way she has done Cliff!

ee4308 Cliff was at the funeral and the tribute. she hated cliff so much that she made Ray fire Cliff for a while. She was just so mean to him its not understandable. I know what is going on but im not aloud to go into details. I hope you will understand and keep Cliff in prayer. He is truly a great man. He has so much of his dad in him. I opened the show that Cliff did in honor of his dad this past February. It was like being on the road with him again. I was the only kid allowed to travel with Ray. No other band member was allowed to bring there kids on the road. Ray considered me and my sister as his grandchildren.Thank you for being a loyal fan to Ray for many years. If you have a Facebook, I started a fan club for Cliff.
      Best Wishes,
      Gary D. Jones Jr.

He wasn't sitting with Janie. He was sitting with the rest of the Cherokee Cowboys. He is really hurt by all she has done to him and his dad's relationship. Ray knew how terrible she was but he couldnt leave because she would have taken everything of his. She is very very cruel. Words cant describe it. My dad worked for Ray as lead guitarist for 20 years. I was made an honorary Cherokee Cowboy because i was the only child aloud to travel with the band. nobody elses kids were aloud to go but me. It was great. Many great memories of us.

When Willie is gone, the last of the breed of real country singers will be gone.

+imagrandpa We still have George Strait and Allen Jackson after they go there won't be anyone worth a hoot.

+bigtopboss can't argue with that, but Willie is the last direct link. Before him, it was definitely Ray Price.
I guess age does have some perks.
