Set Theory: What it is and why I use it to Compose - Part 4

  • Welcome to the final video in my series on Musical Set Theory. In previous videos, I've explained the basics of this theory and briefly discussed how it's used in music analysis. However, nothing I've said so far explains why I use it. I certainly don't use it for analysis, so why do I consider it important in my composition process? This is what I explain in this video.

Thank you for the video! As a suggestion for the next topic, it’d be great to see some short composition exercise videos where you use set theory to compose short 8-16 bars passages.

Great series Antonio. I will certainly give it a shot in one of my future compositions. It’s intriguing.

A question from an interested amateur in Sweden: How much is what you describe in these excelent videos related to George Perle´'s Twelvetone Tonality technique?

That is an interesting question. I know who Perle was but to be honest I don't know anything about his technique. I just found an article that explains it. I'll look into it to see if there's any connection.

I apologize for the delay. I'm teaching so many classes this semester that I didn't get to read the article before, but I just did. Perle's TTT (Twelve-Tone Tonality) also uses the concept of sets, but in Perle's system, sets are built following a set of rules (or at least, that's what I understand from the article). In Set Theory there are no rules for the construction of sets. But it is interesting to know that the concept has been used in other ways. I had no idea about that.
