Dear Diary, mini-opera for soprano, tenor and piano
This video is an animatic of the fifth song from my album "Inspirations", which you can find on digital platforms, such as CZcams Music, Spotify, Apple Music and many more.
Subtitles are available in English and Spanish.
Dear Diary is a mini-opera based on extracts from the book "The Diaries of Adam and Eve", by Mark Twain. I wrote the script myself, using just a few sentences from Twain's book and arranging them in such a way as to produce a story with a convincing dramatic arc. It is dedicated to my grandmother, Gladys Garland.
Dear Diary was recorded in Barcelona, at the famous Liceu Conservatory, by Ximena Agurto, Roger Padullés and Elías Romero.

    Related to tip #5, a habit I've noticed for myself is what I call "additive composition". Once I've entered something in, it creates this psychological barrier against changing it. Maybe it is similar to the cognitive bias of loss aversion. When I don't like where I've ended up, I only want to try to add more things (more notes, more parts, etc...) rather than change or remove existing stuff. Hence, the importance of noticing when this is happening and being willing to "unmake" decisions as you suggest in #5. And software can make it easy to stash and restore those parts later if it doesn't work out.

    you mention that the result is divided by twelve, result of what operation? What is being done and why? What does this look like?

      Hi! Yes, that's where I talk about mathematical operations with sets. Let's say I want to transpose a pc, say 9, a perfect fifth up. What I have to do is add 7 (7 semitones make a perfect fifth) to 9. The result is 16, but 16 is not a pc (only the integers 0-11 are pc's). Of course, you would immediately say that 16 is equal to 4, because it's like going from the 12-hour system to the 24-hour system. But suppose it is a much larger number, arising as a result of a very complex operation. How would you find the equivalent pc? Well, you just divide the number by 12 and keep the remainder, which in this case is 4.

      You're right. I also wanted to do those but unfortunately I don't have time. I have to teach, compose and take care of various other things (and have a life, of course). There just isn't time on my schedule to make videos anymore. Maybe when AI's get smarter I can ask one to help me. :-)

      Thank you very much, Nicholas! Some say that contemporary classical music is moving away from those things you mention. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but in my case, with the exception of a few "exploratory" works, I've always leaned towards writing music of a more "amiable" nature. I'm not saying it's better. It's just what I prefer.

    Really fantastic! Beautiful piece. Would love to hear the entire work. This composition method reminds me of Stockhausen "Formulaic" method. Adhering to a set of rules created by the composer. Although their details of the inner workings are very different the overall concept is similar. Your adaptation of Dasa's method is also very intriguing. I like your approach of listening to the pitches as you apply them to the rhythmic mold as opposed to chance. Your channel is really great. It must take a lot of work to put these together. Congrats

      Thanks! Yes, indeed, Haladhara was a great admirer of Stockhausen and applied many of Stockhausen's principles to his own ideas on composition. He even corresponded with him in the 90s (don't ask me how) and Stockhausen sent him some autographed CD's. Your comment reminds me that I have to make a third video on this process, to explain how I'm using Haladraha's method to write this piece.

      I apologize for the delay. I'm teaching so many classes this semester that I didn't get to read the article before, but I just did. Perle's TTT (Twelve-Tone Tonality) also uses the concept of sets, but in Perle's system, sets are built following a set of rules (or at least, that's what I understand from the article). In Set Theory there are no rules for the construction of sets. But it is interesting to know that the concept has been used in other ways. I had no idea about that.

      I know what you mean. I was in your shoes once, many years ago. I had ideas but I didn't know how to develop them, much less how to write them. There's music that can be made without the need for a score, but for something like this it's a must.
