I needed a new stand for my grill so I made this simple one using just a miter saw and a drill.

*This* is the Steve we all need in times like these
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Yes very refreshing and down to earth. That’s why Steve has so many subscribers.
"If you're gonna build this yourself, and let's face it....you're not...."
Pure gold, right there! loved it!
"one way to check if something is square is to measure the diagonals. I never do that, but it's something I need to say as a CZcams woodworker" so much fourth wall breaking here
This is the dumbest way to build this thing
Sounds like a challenge.
Oh, how WRONG you are SNARKY One! Lol! I am re-organizing my back deck/smoking area...this piece is actually a perfect simple project! Thanks for sharing Steve! Love the channel!
😆
I'm loving this jaded, snarky side of Steve.
"Don't forget to smash that-"
Smash WHAT? Finish your sentence, Steve!
We watch these videos because of Steve, not because of what he does! The woodworking youtube may be overcrowded, but there's only one Steve Ramsey 🤗👍
He's been there all along. That's why most of us watch
I, too, am enjoying this side of Steve. This is quickly becoming one of my preferred WWMM video, because I am chuckling, learning, and seeing a side of Steve that I find even more enjoyable than his normal presentation.
You should have known him some years before, when he refused to wear or use safety hardware. I have learned a lot with him since then. Steve will always be Steve.
"13 years I've been doing this on this channel. This is what you get!" That's why we appreciate you, Steve!
Steve sounds like he unexpectedly got called in to work on a Saturday and I love it.
"I'm not even supposed to BE HERE today"
ROFL, so true!! This is a great video!
LOL at Steve cutting himself off when saying "smash that like button..."
Oh my God, same. 😂 Hilarious!
Literally made me laugh out loud and almost wake up my wife. Just perfect!
"yeah, that's pretty diagonal there" -Steve 2021..., love ii!
Was looking for this
Laughed out loud at that one
Woodworking motto:
"Don't bother getting everything right 'cause you won't, just make sure it's all equally wrong!"
Ah man. The running commentary was wonderful. Missed you Steve.
"... and let's face it... you won't..." That was my laugh for the day! Enjoyed the video as always, Steve!
"By the way, you can glue end grain now, you know." Has everybody watched that testing video? :)
That and a few others about the video too.
Egg Zachary
Pretty much blew up the Woodworking internet. That was a great video too.
You should see Rob Cosman and how it will change his woodworking.
He just couldn’t resist 😂
Steve is genuinely my favorite CZcams woodworker. His projects are simple and look great! I love his silliness and sarcasm too!
I love "minimal tools" videos on CZcams. It's fun to count all the tools the maker forgot they were using. Not judging Steve, I've seen it dozens of times on many, many channels. I think they are trying to do a good thing by encouraging people to get into woodworking.
...and 4 clamps, a tape measure, a framing square, an impact driver, a large work bench, a dust collection system, a power sander, a roller brush, and a paint brush.
So, I wasn't the only one! :)
to be fair, you can do this without dust collection and just sweep up at the end.
This was like hanging out with you while you build something and I thoroughly enjoyed it!! 😄 "Did you hear? We can glue end grain now!" 😂😂
I love your sense of humor. I could watch you build random stuff all day. My own woodworking projects often follow a similar trajectory of "Figure it out as I go." lol
At 6:36, that's when my father would call me and have me hold it in place while he thinks 🤣
"The joy of woodworking"
Steve, THIS is why I'm here. You're REAL and I appreciate that so much. Keep being authentic, my man
That's the Steve I was missing who build things 😃
Let's be honest, there is nothing like unmitigated candor. 100% refreshing!
The unmitigated audacity! Great googly moogly!
Loved the video and the “when are you going to make a project video” joke. Also, I think it’s important to show the true behind the scenes impact of thinking a project out but making a mistake. As well as showing others what putting it together ‘in a more challenging order’ looks like. Also liked the tip about painting BEFORE assembly, would have made my last project much easier to finish. Cheers!
It's very refreshing to see that we aren't the only ones that realize too late that we missed something obvious. Thanks buddy, for the videos for 13 years.
Thanks for keeping it real, Steve. I really appreciate your no nonsense approach. I often build while figuring it out as I go. Plans are good, but a project like this is more about build practice, tool use, etc., without fussing with perfection. This would be a great project to build with a beginner. It would be a fun project with spouse, child, grandchild. There is plenty to learn from here.
the most fun part of any diy wood project is looking at blank pieces of wood and figuring out in your head how to make something from them
The good old humorous Steve in a project video... ahhhhhh
So great to have you woodworking again. Thanks for the great sense of humor !
I love the “by the way you can glue end grain now” comment! Great project Steve!
Great to see a project video that brings viewers back to a simple, doable, Mere Mortal mindset. I got into woodworking 5 years ago thanks to WWMM.
Steve, there's two things that keep me coming back to your channel over other guys. One is your focus on beginners, the other is your sense of humor. Never change!
Just minutes before this came live I said to my significant other "my guru kinda stopped making woodworking videos as he used to" never been more happy to be wrong about something.
Nice build, I also put heavy plastic screw-in little round feet on the bottom of the legs since they are end grain so water won't wick up them as easily. It has worked well on a large planter and bench I have made last year and this spring. Love your humor. Great landscaping and the cats on the prowl are awesome, Good stuff. All the best. Peace and Good Fortune and Good Health to you and your family and cats!
This has to be one of my favorite videos yet. You totally made that just like any diy wood worker I know. Guys like me don't have all tools and we dont measure it all . I think we just go with the flow like you just did. Thanks for the video.
"Yeah, they're pretty diagonal there." 😂 Steve, I fully enjoyed this video. So glad you did a project video!
This is a cool grill stand, Steve and I really enjoyed watching you build it and listening to crack jokes while you did it. You're correct. I won't build it, because the kids are gone and it's so much easier to throw a Stouffer's or Marie Callender's into the microwave.
That doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy it and that I don't look forward to your next project. Hey, I've built many (not all) of your projects over the years, but I think that I've enjoyed them all.
There's only one Steve Ramsey. You're the OG of CZcams woodworking content creators.
Thanks for the video and for the fun.
This video has a strong "lockdown woodworking" vibe. I love IT.
I love this video. I identify with every single second of it. Thank you for showing the true side of craftsmanship - staring, scratching the head, muttering, figuring out how to outwit ones own previous wit, figuring it out
YEAH!!!! Lockdown Steve shines through. I've been seeing so many 2x4 builds so seeing this build with 1x4 kicked my brain into "oh, hey, 1x4's are plenty strong enough for these things." Harkens back to the video the other guy did about using 1/2 ply instead of 3/4 ply. This was such a lovely, easy, clean, approachable build. Thanks!
The honest carpenter did a half vs three quarters vid recently.
This is the realest build I've seen in a while... I often have those "Now why the heck did I do that?" moments. Enjoyed the problem solving and snark.
Absolutely love this video. It's the old Steve back again. You building projects large or small, good or bad is what we love. Thank you.
The best woodworking video ever! :D
For me, woodworking projects for are exercises in realizing how many dumb mistakes I can make on builds, so I can appreciate the realism of this video.
I love imperfect project videos. I tend to overthink the projects that I do and it really helps to have wisdom to lean on when I am caught in a tight spot.
A lot of big CZcams makers will only show you the perfect project from start to finish with no mistakes; but that's unrealistic.
I enjoy your project video because they are honest and transparent. You are especially good at explaining your thoughts while navigating these little issues. That makes me more equipped to handle similar concepts when I am working on my projects.
This is exactly the type of woodworking video I like to see. You are always authentic. You show is your process, including your mistakes, and you make a solid finished piece of work.
I love the honesty and humor in all this. Plus it gives us Mere Mortals permission to have fun and not stress about “doing it right.”
I was hoping for the rustic charm theme play on the not evenly spaced boards!
I know, that or extra fancy!
Deck builders used to use a 16 penny nail for a spacer so just copy them and use some arbitrary item to space them. 👍
I don't think I've ever watched your videos for actual woodworking content. I just like watching you, hear your banter, and see you being you, Steve!
So here, take my view. :P
You did a great job, Steve. You made me laugh, when you did the bottom shelf. Thank you, you made my day.
It is always lovely to see the real side of woodworking and I am glad to see you back working on a project.
8:36 Hey! That's my go to line when building 😁
I actually like seeing the difficulties come up. All the perfectly scripted and issue free videos make me feel inadequate. Seeing the real process is refreshing and honest.
As a long-time follower of your channel, I totally love this project. You bring a down-home appeal to woodworking. Nothing has to be perfect. the project just has to fit your style and taste. Thank you for continuing to post great material.
Been watching for years, one of your best videos to date. Wood working should be fun and you adding laughter makes life fun. Thank you Steve
When he said twelve 1x4s, my heart didn’t drop. 😂 So happy to see lumber prices down again.
Hi Steve...I have been watching your channel for about two years now. Thank you for posting this project. Most people that are in a position like yourself would have stopped this project, rethought the steps, deleted the video clips recorded thus far and started all over. It is helpful to beginners like myself to see that even experienced "mortal" people run into obstacles and everything is not always 100% perfect, like some would like to have us believe. I also appreciate you stating, "Its' close enough." Don't get so frustrated in trying to make everything "perfect." And I loved where you talked about your friends will not come to your house to visit with a tape measure in hand to take measurements of your projects. Wonderful statement that ties it all together...Thank you for showing all the good you do for our community...and even some of your mistakes...It all is greatly appreciated!
So great to see you recognize you've built your way into trouble and then work out how to get around yourself. No matter how much I plan it out in my head I wind up there too. Steve is human after all. Thank you. Also loved the "Don't tell the other wood workers"
Love it Steve. This is how I feel every time. Just figuring it out as you go. Especially that sped up part of you walking around the half-frame trying to figure out how to continue in the best way!
Hey Steve,
This was just what the doctor ordered. I'm a beginning woodworker and am prone to severe analysis paralysis that keeps me from just getting in the garage and building something. Your self-deprecating, snarky running commentary just reminded me that we don't have to be perfectionists to enjoy being in the garage. Thank you for doing a little build video. You are DA MAN! :-)
I am soooo glad to have the old Steve back for a project video!
Aahhh. Missed these videos so much. Thanks for talking us through another project. The yard looks great and it was nice to see your cats again. 🐾
If I had a nickel for every time I had one of those “oh crap, that could have gone better” moments in the shop I wouldn’t have to work for a living. Thanks for the video.
Steve, Your actions and comments in this video (the realism and humor) remind me so much of your early videos! Great to see your old self back again! Haha
Perhaps we can say that woodworking is 60% formula and 40% creativity and the creativity on your behalf is most brilliant as well as being a fantastic speaker down to the finest of details. I am 72 years of age and nailed my first stud in at 11 years old...since then I could not tell you how many pieces I’ve made for myself as well as other people, still at it today I have to man-up and let you know that I do learn things from watching and listening to you. You Steve, are super great for the woodworking community and I’m so happy that you include the younger and the beginners. You are most valuable to the woodworking community and thank you Steve for everything I’ve learned from you in the past years. Thanks man.
Steve long time follower maybe close to 8 years. Always enjoy videos, loving the Steve evolution of personal character and how you do your videos.
Thanks for pointing out the reality of woodworking for the majority of us. I got sucked into thinking I needed all the stuff before doing things but the reality is you would need not only millions of dollars but also a huuuge shed! You have also captured the struggles of the individual wrangling with the construction process. Thanks again! You are a legend!
This is probably my favorite video yet. Thank you for demonstrating what it looks like to complete a project as a mere mortal 🙂
Your new yard looks great, Steve. I liked this project and the relaxed approach :-)
This IS the way real woodworkers work their wood. Love it! Thanks Steve.
Steve, I absolutely loved this video and the casual, snarky, honest/real approach to instruction. I have really missed this type of content from you. Great video.
I respect that you don't edit your happy mistakes. I mess up all the time. I think to myself.."I have no business woodworking , but Steve makes mistakes too and it's ok". So I keep building.
You know you could put all those slats in crooked to one another, and really drive visitors crazy.
Thumbs up and thanks for posting!
I’ve missed this! The unpolished raw feel of Mere Mortals! Loved it!!
Can't say this enough, your practical and realistic approach to woodworking gives me so much confidence to do the things I want to! Thank you Steve!!!
Great video Steve. Couldn't have come at a better time, I have finally been getting back out in the shop and making some stuff and it is always good to be reminded by a true pro that it doesn't have to be perfect. You really got me in to woodworking because of your simple and non stressful approach. Great video and keep up the good work!
The humor in this episode was phenomenal! in all the 13 years of you being on youtube this has to be the peak of comedy for your channel.
So nice to see you back in the shop. Your wit and humor as we head back into the dark time. You add an element of comfort to life. Regarding not having friends who measure your work, you don't have engineer friends evidently.
It's always a pleasure to see Steve and.. umm.. project videos. Love it! And hey, just realized, that this table is perfect for my small shop, as a workbench. 🤠 greets from Finland
You always provide a valuable reminder that woodworking is supposed to be fun and relaxing.
Steve, I watch all of your videos even the "podcasts"
I learn something every time.
Thank you Steve. I've found out the hard way that even the most basic woodworking project require some kind of planning and attention. You let your guard down because you can count on your years of experience, but then you forget the basics and a really simple project turns into unecessary problem solving. Truely humbling!
I'm totally loving slightly unhinged Steve lol
This is the best woodworking video I’ve seen. This is the way impromptu projects go.
Fantastic video Steve. I laughed watching this when you were putting this together. We are only human after all. You make projects seem so easy to make. Keep up the good videos. Syd Australia.
Dang, I missed your project videos. Your sense of humor is awesome, and the grill stand isn’t half bad either. Thanks for the laughs and the great ideas.
Ok. I’m a nerd. And a long time follower of you. I love the content you’re putting out these days. You’ve won me over to the wood working talk show for sure.
And… I still love watching you build.
Watched this as I was drinking my morning coffee. Great laugh to start off the day! Love it
I really love watching your project video no matter what it is, your videos is what started me in woodworking.
Steve, your sense of humor in this episode is unmatched!! You had me laughing so hard, thank you!!!
Loved the video. This is the kind of woodworking I love doing and feel proud about when it's done! Thank you.
You know what? This was my first full-length video of yours I've watched (the shorts pulled me in!), and the simplicity and just-do-it-ness of the project and your delivery really make woodworking feel approachable! Which, what a great project to promote your affordable tool guide on!
I think one aspect of this type of video is that it feels more personal. It's like we're all friends and just having a bit of a chat while you work. As another commenter said, I think we all need this at times like these.
Looks like We are getting the unedited version of Steve and his project and I love it!
Hey Steve, I'm around two months away from graduating college and my graduation gift to myself is going to be buying your woodworking for mere mortals course. I'm extremely excited to start woodworking, and watching your videos does nothing but build my excitement!
Turned out great Steve! And wow the landcaping looks terrific in the yard! I remember you talking about it during lockdown. I love your woodworking projects 💕👍
Beautiful work, Steve! 😃
But you know, I had an uncle (unfortunately he passed) that had a tape measure in his eyes! He could look at any construction and tell you what was wrong. 😬
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
You're right Steve! I'm not going to build this! But I enjoyed watching you cut and screw and rant!
Happy to see that after having your woodworking channel for 13 years, you finally figured out... wait... wait... never mind.
Great video and great reminder that we all make mistakes. Mistakes are not failures, they’re just detours to arriving at our destination.
It's awesome that you did a project using basic tools and showed some of your mistakes as well. I find myself getting too fancy and complicated sometimes in my videos. You inspired me to get back to a few basic builds!
I’ve been following you for years, Steve. It’s been a pleasure watching all of your builds. Keep up the great work!
Steve I've missed you making stuff. Thank you.
I know you talked a lot about woodworking videos being just another form of entertainment instead of education tool or project guides and you proved yourself right with this one. It was the most fun I had watchin a woodworking video in a long time, probably ever. And I loved the fact it is a project and it is for beginners and you dont need bunch of tools for it. And while I wont be making a grill stand, I will use some pointers from this when building another of my slatted bench/stand pieces. And as always - it is great to see experienced people making mistakes and fixing them. Thank you for that.
Steve, you got me started on woodworking at the beginning of 2020! I haven’t stopped creating things since. Your course was very helpful as well! Thank you 😊
So many good one liners in this one! Loved the edit too especially your line about end grain glueing!
The humour is the best it has ever been.... 'did you know you can glue end grain now?' BRILLIANT!!!!
I need a LOVE button, like isn’t enough! This is real woodworking for me (often qualified by expletives during the process!). Thanks for the true story of this….look forward to more
