- Arena documentary which looks at the role of legendary D.J. John Peel and his producer John Walters have had in the encouragement of bands who have yet to break through into commercial recording. Bands such as The Liggers, The Skids, Move to India and The Nightingales are featured in the programme. This was first broadcast on BBC2 in January 1981, but was repeated on BBC Four in 2007 !!
Arena is still the most beautiful opening for a documentary ever made.
I remember John Walters on Radio 1 in the evenings reviewing the music papers and culture in general. He was hilarious and is just as much a legendary figure as John Peel.
I love the way he plugged DLT’s breakfast show. John could barely contain his excitement lol.
John was going to take me to lunch in the BBC canteen at Portland Place one time. At the last moment he said "The trouble is, you never know when you're going to run into Simon Bates!". So we went to the pub instead.
The teenage band I was in had the distinction of being the first to ambush him outside the BBC with a Walkman (the first JVC one) containing our demo tape. He was absolutely lovely about it and game, told us he was on his way to the BBC library and popped the headphones on to listen as he went. Came back a bit later with some constructive feedback even though the demo tape was pretty terrible; he'd obviously listened to it. Maybe a year later we went back to give him a 7" single we'd pressed 500 copies of ourselves, he remembered us and played it on his show (although it was also not great), reading out the address for ordering copies. A mensch and an inspiration. .
Fair play to John peel.
He hated DLT .
Yes thought that from other bits of interviews not sure why
With a passion.
