Another small tip to make rivers more natural by a geography nerd:
    1. Since rivers flow in an 'S' shape, make the width of the river on its outer curves slightly wider than the rest of the river. Reason: corrosion.
    2. You can add more texture on the inner banks of the river, since that's where sediments tend to deposit.
    3. If you're starting the river from a mountain / cliff, make the upstream thinner and the downstream (if it leads to an ocean / lake) wider.
    4. The bigger and longer the river, the larger / more dramatic it's curves get.
Most of these only apply for medium to large rivers, generally streams have lesser and softer curves than rivers. Have fun building!

I love this format, and I can't overstate this - you sharing the approach/thought process in this way has MASSIVELY improved my own world. It's like night and day from the first video. Truly, thank you so much!
I would love to see a video of this style done for SO MANY THINGS: how to approach building a windmill, inn, pub, library, cathedral, blacksmith, fountain, garden, waterfall, etc.
It would also be amazing if you did videos in a similar style applied to general building practices: choosing build scale/layout/block palette, how to build different build styles (medieval, fantasy, steam punk, whatever you want), how to layout a city vs rural village. I could go on.
Your builds provide me with so much inspiration, and have for a long time. But this series has made me a better builder. Thank you and please keep it up.

This is great Blue, I always have issues with rivers and such to get them to look natural and not a straight line and make it fit the project I am working on. I stay away from those mountains as that is a burn out point unless it is absolutely necessary. Keep up the great videos and tutorials :)

    • @BlueNerdMC
      @BlueNerdMC  Před 2 lety +13

Thank you David, hopefully these tips will help you make your rivers a bit more natural, planning them like roads i think makes it much easier. I also agree with mountains they are a huge project and can easily burn you out. I agree buddy, projects of that size should be side projects that you go back and forth to now and again in between building the things you enjoy, otherwise it can become de-motivating. =)

I hate you with a passion, BlueNerd. Why? Well, you make all of this look so easy. I'm literally in the middle of some minor terraforming that includes a set of cliffs. I'm fairly confident the cliffs are one of the hardest things I've built in my nine years playing Minecraft... and I haven't even started texturing. The icing on the cake is when I take step back to review progress, it looks like I've hardly made a dent. Bravo on your amazing builds.

Firstly I wanna say this was so relaxing to watch and I loved it. I really need some friends to make a creative world with and just to vibe in.
I have just other few tips/things to bear in mind from a completely geographical point of view (I suck at this game lol)
-the features in a river depend on where it is Eg you find v shaped valleys in mountains, waterfalls are found more upstream than down stream, floodplains and levees are found near River mouths.
It's just another way to add more character and life to your world/build but the best part about this game is that it can be whatever you want it to be so go nuts :)

Really great tutorial of principles. Enjoyed this immensely. I especially like the clustering of vegetation along the river bank - adds a very natural touch. The one thing I'd add to your mountain section is to light underneath as you go. Last thing anyone wants when building a mountain is to fall into their own defacto mob farm XD Fab vid. Thanks Blue.

It helps to make rivers appear right to pay attention to which side of a curve gets silt deposit buildups and which side runs deeper. Those curves widen as a river ages because the water flows faster along the outside edge and carves it out while the inside turns into a rocky or sandy flat

Just the texture part, when you used those stone bricks, it make it looks a little unnatural for me, they don't fit in the natural stones at all, a little bit of well placed granite is good, but the palet color change can be a pain to deal too.

I love the cliff building guide! But just my personal opinion, stone bricks are a more polished sort of block, so it wouldnt really go well with natural blocks

I know stone bricks are not really a great fit but they just add a slightly darker shade as Stone and andesite are fairly light. Try to think of them more as cracked pieces on the stone cliff rather than bricks. You could use cobblestone or mossy cobblestone but it really depends on the color tone you are going for =)

@@BlueNerdMC I understand, I guess it’s all based on personal preference. Anyway, really loved the guide, watching the mountain guide right now!

This is typically how I also make mountains except upscaled, since I prefer that grandiose feeling of the distance mountains span, both horizontally and Vertically.

I'm new to your channel and I would like to ask if there's a difference on landscaping tips on a non-snowy land to a snow land ^^
