I was there. This is the world premiere of this piece. Now this piece becomes one of the most famous percussion notes, but no audience in there could expect it in that time. The performers were the all of 2015 BM class members of Eastman percussion, They were junior in this time. Actually, I'm dad of Sam Um who is one of the marimba players.
I'm sure you are, but you should be incredibly proud of your son. And you should be proud of yourself too; as the musician son of a musician, players like Sam don't come out of nowhere -- there's music in his blood.
Whats so interesting about this song is you notice how the parts are written almost a half measure apart from each other. Like the cajons and how they trade off at 1:13. Just like a shadow that is always behind you.
Throughout a lot of the piece, the vibraphone parts are the same rhythm except one sixteenth off. I found it very challenging when my percussion ensemble played this piece.
when everyone comes in at 6:25 it gives me such indoor wgi vibes, definitely miss playing this piece hopefully we run it back on our next night of percussion show
Ahh this type of music makes me tear up. Makes me miss percussion ensemble in high school and makes me wish I knew more people who want to make this type of music. Absolutely beautiful you guys, carry this passion throughout life. It's so incredible!
@@miaak.u6709 Good luck at your performance! 😁 I would highly recommend checking out Stewart Copeland’s music if you enjoy percussion and haven’t already!
I heard this song for the very first time today (04/27/2024) at the WSMA State site at UW-Platteville while waiting my son's percusion ensemble to perform. I was BLOWN AWAY, this song is a masterpiece. It is almost a Chill/Deep House song. And kudos to I believe Middleton High School in Wisconsin for your performance. I still have chills thinking about it. Not taking anything away from my son, he scored three 1s and a 2 (for his percussion ensemble but the bar was set way high as they followed Middleton) but this song and their performance was the hightlight of my day.
we played this at prospect highschool. the story was that Ivan was inspired by the darkness of Radiohead and Dave Mathews Band. That was almost 10 years ago. still love this piece.
i have watched to the duet version but this performance is the reason that ensemble versions are always better. LIKE OMG THAT WAS AWESOME YOU GUYS!! WOO!!
Played this piece four years ago today for a talent show. Legendary. My most favorite and nostalgic piece. This crew performed it amazingly. Can’t even begin to think of how many times I’ve listened and watched this video.
Joseph Burns I like the Pulse version, but it didn’t really capture the raw emotion and beauty this piece holds for me and that’s a shame. I think the drumset addition may have killed the whole thing but that’s just me
blows my mind that this piece is now 10 years old. it was a pleasure having the opportunity to audition in front of you back in January, Ivan! here’s to the next 10 years of this piece!
my music teacher showed me this and I loved I showed it to my family and they loved it I showed it to my friends and they loved it these people are amazing! they seriously inspire me. I love you guys!
Bravo !!! Mais quelle beauté cette musique et cette interprétation !!!!! C'est un grand plaisir de découvrir cette vidéo !!!! Merci pour ce beau partage
wow. what an astounding performance. i love the way the “extra” instruments (vibes / Cajuns ) intermixes with the marimbas. i loved the regular duet and i think you did a fine job playing this with such musicality. i find it extremely innovative and creative of you to add in the vibes and other percussion. that is an important constituent in presenting musicianship, having your own way of performing. sure it’s great to not only play the solo but play it well but it’s an even better thing to do what you guys just did and add that little touch of your own. the vibes ring perfectly and the cajuns fit in excellently with the rest of the players. that what you call music my friends. fine job.
Man, they play this piece so damn fast, just amazing. I have a high school group playing it cleanly about 75% of this speed and I’m content with that. I can’t see us going a whole lot faster when we perform it.
I’m in my junior year of HS, playing marimba 1 in this ensemble for district comp in a few weeks. I love this piece so much, it’s definitely my favorite ensemble piece!
Woah! this just .. this is.. its.. I don't know what to say.. it just blows me away! overwhelming maybe? mighty? powerful, impactful? wondrous? oh and its soothing to, and somewhat mysterious without being haunting, but rather its warm, radiant, blazing, like a solarflare!
I played this song when I was secondary 3, I was in charge of marimba 1. Although this song is hard, the process is still good and I enjoyed a lot✨Catching shadow is a masterpiece.
I'm impressed by the sound that dude's getting out of the cajón

Anyone else just NOT ABLE TO GET ENOUGH OF THIS SONG?! It’s freaking amazing!!! I aspire to be able to play this with my other percussionist friends.
4 years later, I am playing this with my other percussionist friends.
Can confirm, I am one of those friends
Literally THE COOLEST ENSEMBLE EVER
Mallet percussionists are so underrated and this video is one of the many reasons why I think they’re amazing
I've watched this like ten times already, not stopping anytime soon.
Have you stopped?
Still here.
What about now?
Have you stopped ?
What about now? 🙂
It's hard to find good percussion ensembles like this with nice pitched percussion voices and harmonies.
we played this at prospect highschool. the story was that Ivan was inspired by the darkness of Radiohead and Dave Mathews Band. That was almost 10 years ago. still love this piece.
Can't believe I'm gonna be performing this at VMEA with my percussion ensemble in a few months. All I can say is, marimba goes hard.
Gods. All of them Gods. Ivan Trevino? God of all the Gods.
No, you're wrong
Blake Barger nah gene koshenski is a god
i have watched to the duet version but this performance is the reason that ensemble versions are always better. LIKE OMG THAT WAS AWESOME YOU GUYS!! WOO!!

Kamil Gomez itd be cool to have synth pads playing with the vibes too

いつかやりたい、私にとって特別な打楽器アンサンブル曲です 😳
Am I the only one looking at the cute marimba player in the middle that plays extremely well?
Lindo!!! Meu filho toca esse instrumento, porque faz percussão . Sou apaixonada por esse som!!

Young Sam Um is so adorable!

The universe is rhythmic.

WOW
We tried playing this in my high school and we could barely make it half way
🤔
We did too. I think we had to skip a part in the middle
I feel that Pure Sensitive and Holy Sound
👏👏👏👏
I always thought that us percussionists are stupid, until I watched this.
The Boredom Cure nah percussionists are the best
then that makes your comment stupid
I'm the best in my school and am I dumb
Zachary Cathcart Can't really verify any of that, but the second part seems legit
The Boredom Cure
my favorite spot to start is at 6:26
I think you would like it to
Does anyone know what mallets marimba 1 is using. I have a recital for my solo and I would like to use these mallets
Felicitaciones .. Es una obra muy bonita y la versión igualmente... Donde puedo encontrar la partitura gracias.
GIMME DAT MARIMBA OMG O.o I WANT IT IT BOOTIFUL
Got 20 grand
We’re doing this as our top percussion ensemble this year what mallets should we use
Shut up Kevin
playing this in week, the part i cant figure out is (of course) not on camera when It is plyed.
