    I've done this for a few years now. No need to cool, just be patient. It's not about gas pressure difference - though that helps a bit. Gravity will just work as well.

      Really?! Every time I don’t cool the bottom one it stalls out on me. I think if I left it to gravity and time I would completely forget about it and wayyyyyy overfill it.

    Nice video. I worry about how many times I can refuel before destroying the canister valve so what I do is take my nearly empties and combine them into one. I save one of the newly emptied canisters as my next future receiver. I have overfilled one. While deciding if burning it off is the best remedy I dropped it about 3’ onto my kitchen floor. The bottom bulged out. I stepped outside, screwed on my stove and burned it half down then transferred what was left. Lesson learned.

      Yikes! I think I would have peed a little! I haven’t hit the limit on refueling yet…honestly I haven’t even considered that there even was a limit for the valve. 😬

    While I have a number of small cans with limited fuel left over, thinking I'd have to transfer fuel from all of them into one... I never even considered buying an extra large can to refill small cans. Brilliant... [drives to the nearest outdoor store].

      It’s so much cheaper!! Worth the drive for sure.

      @@BACKPACKERish just refilled up five 110g cans. Now I have money to buy a Starbucks! 🙏🏼

    over filling wont increase the pressure it will decrease the volume of gas. When gas leaves the container some of liquid has to boil to return the inside of the container to an equilibrium pressure. If the can is too full it would loose pressure faster then it could maintain it with boil off (or whatever thats called) so your stove would run a bit low until it opened up inside the container. Also the liquid going into the container will quickly warm up the smaller container. I would guess leaving the small container in a salted ice bath would allow you to steadily fill the container.

      @BACKPACKERish  Před 9 měsíci

      Yeah! Someone else mentioned the ice bath and that’s brilliant! Thanks for clarifying about the overfilling too. I learn more about this stuff when I put out a video from you guys than I think I could ever learn on my own.

    The thing does NOT work the way people think. You imply, just like others do, is that you move fuel from one cannister to another.
    It has a one-way valve .. but in order to move the gas from one cannister to another it requires Pressure. You eventually get to a pressure level equilibrium where you get zero gas to move. the equilibrium is not at the Full level.
    You can cheat a bit by making the filling cannister COLD .. but to think that you can carry this thing on a backpacking trip, find tossed cannisters in hiker boxes, and move it to your cannister is a Red Herring

    • @BACKPACKERish
      @BACKPACKERish  Před 9 měsíci

      I’m not sure I follow. I agree that equilibrium isn’t full, and that I don’t think you can fill one from tossed canisters.
      I would only do this before a trip at home like I did here. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.

    There is a different valve adapter that works with the tall butane canisters. It means you are running 100% butane instead of 80/20 butane propane but they are half the price again (or less). The butane bottles are 220g, so with a little loss the perfectly refill the middle size hiking container.

      @BACKPACKERish  Před 10 měsíci

      I’ve never gone to the straight butane…not for any real reason other than I just assumed I didn’t know enough about the different fuels and storage systems to do it without making an error. Anything people should know before they do?

      @byroboy Před 10 měsíci +1

      My understanding is it is a slightly lower pressure gas than propane, so no safety issues. It's less energy dense without propane in the mix I expect to get one less boil per canister.

    I think this is most compelling less for cost savings but for the environmental aspect of using as much gas as possible from a container and removing any extra prior to puncture for recycling. Price-wise this is probably pennies on the dollar in terms of low gram venting from empty to partially-filled (though the cost savings of large into small is probably best as you've shown).
    I suppose a golden rule would be to toss any cannisters and not reuse them if there are any signs of damage to the valve stem or pressure vessel (bumps, rust, deep scuffs) for safety sake.

      You are 100% correct…it was really cold and I’m a big baby tho. 😬
      I did use the kitchen fan to pull soma air through, and my main floor is totally open, so there was some mitigation. But you are still right.

    Don't vent if you overfill... Just turn it the other way around
