I used to play a little keyboard but it's a whole new animal with guitar. On the keyboard I could look directly at the keys and be just fine. But in guitar there's a bigger mind-body connection you have to make where you need to form chords or press certain strings at certain frets without looking down. On your picking hand you can plant it on the guitar body but then must know where the pick is in relation to any string without looking down. Muscle memory is key. Untold hours of practice is a bigger key. Much harder than keyboard IMHO. I like where Steve says there's no hard rules here. You have to figure out what works for you. I'm planting my right hand in a certain spot and then closing my eyes to see if I can pick certain strings.

Excellent video, lol I'm already doing quite a bit of this, the "familiar intro" was probably the first thing I learned years ago before I gave up, acoustic was too much of a pain in the arse, but trying Again with an electric and your beginner classes are an enormous help, thank you!

Hey Steve - is it normal for me to not have a relaxed hand? Like the other fingers that are not holding the pick are still curled into my hand, but I see most people have 3 open fingers… it feels best but I don’t know if it will cause issues down the road
Thanks for watching, Ro! One of the things Steve says a lot is that if it's more comfortable for you to do something a little differently than he does, then you should do it the way that's more comfortable for you.
Which means, if it feels more comfortable and natural for you to curl your fingers in when you strum, then that's how you should strum. Just remember to keep your hand relaxed (not squeezing or holding tension, I mean) and you're good to go. :-)

How do I fix squealing? Often when I pick with the tip of the pick, it sometimes makes a sqeal or screech

In the video, Steve talks about holding the pick at different angles. It's possible that you might be hitting the string at a funky angle with the pick, and that's causing extra noise.

You are using mostly downstrokes.My personal problem comes when i need to use upstrokes on high speed solo`s.
First!
FINDING the String on Right Hand remains an exasperating issue. ! ugh. Pick Peck Pick Pick etc (my poor Neighbors should they be able to hear!). I practice SCALES every Day in hopes that one day I will be able to SYNCHRONIZE my Fret Hand with Right. I even sit all night watching TV ( its usually CZcams Tutorials!) muting the strings but just plucking around - I continue to Pick the wrong string, mix them up or completely MISS the String altogether.
I've tried many different methods, mostly stabilizing w/fingers in hopes that the POSITION will help develop Muscle Memory "Reference Point of Departure". I've learned to Type & can run a Calculator at the speed of Sound but 6 Silly Strings have me strung out or strung up (excuse Pun!).
I've searched thousands of Videos looking for a Technique, Method, Trick or Tip to figure this out. My continual answer to myself is, "It will come. Keep practicing. Obviously there are a million Guitar Players that HAVE figured this out ...etc etc".
When I watch Steve FLY around the Frets & accurately hit every single Note each & every time blows my Mind. I know everyone started somewhere but I now feel OBSESSED to finally master this yet feeling stuck in the middle of Nowhere !
I swear I'm the only person with this issue as I never see any Comments in regards. But I am grateful for Steve Stine & his brilliant Teaching - I and I'm sure, a few other hundred thousands wish he lived a bit closer than North Dakota !! Lucky anyone who lives near by!
Hi. I know it can be a bit frustrating. Just keep practicing and eventually things will start to work out. Practice slowly at first and focus on your picking hand. Let me know how you are doing the exercises and any questions feel free to ask!
