LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER The pleasant voice of Granny.
Thank you SO much for including me in this... it was a blast!
Guys there is a B-Stock on Thomann with "Slight signs of wear" in the description.. hmmm
*oh that synth on the left looks sick*
...oh its a tool case...
thanks
I thought it was a Behringer Model D ahahha
@@Monica-br8pi same
Don't be fooled, it's a complex eurorack synth
I thought it was a Bodel D as well.
To put it straight: it is still an awesome synth. Just seeing the naked SMD components on a single PCB behind this "separated" frontplates kills the myth.
Actually this video made me love my Moog Grandmother even more. As if I didn't love it already. Has to be one of the greatest synths I've played. I remember dismantling everything I had when I was a teenager just to see the inside and the electronics, but after being trained as a professional electronics mechaninc and built audio electronics for living for a while, I don't have to do it anymore. We have youtube for it now... :)
Exactly my though, this whole ecosystem of DIY and youtube illustrations is the best thing to happen for inventive explorations
Exactly was what I was going to write but somebody already said exactly.
This is the best. I have recently started following all of you individually and now here you all are! WONDERFUL!! It's so good to see all of you guys in the same room!! Cheers!!
I pop up like a garden gnome 🥳🥳🥳
it's nice to see you just hangin out!
I see you back there eyeballing the circuits looking for places to put wires where they should not be!
Circuit bent Grandmother ???
You looking a little tired there, was this filmed right after the Pedal Record? Or too much funny tobacco?
silly
you are a garden gome
A somewhat elongated garden gnome, if I may be so bold.
7:09 Simon be like 'But when you break it that's when it gets interesting!'
This channel is so great. Love it!
Thanks for diving into the guts! Nice to be able to see how mod/repairable they are, and how the digital/analog worlds speak to each other.
Moog let you open that after the Roli debauchery? Heeheehee.
First thing that crossed my mind!
I wasnt sad tho, since its out i wondered what is inside those roli, but nobody showed a tear down of it
i was actually super impressed by how durable that thing was
@3:45 "Don't mention Behringer don't mention Behringer don't mention Behringer"
i used to build and calibrate the grandmothers this brought me back ;-; i prob put this one together lol
yo can you help me out, why don't I get any signal when I plug in my headphones, whenever the jack switches to TRS mode I get no output
HEY LOOK MUM!! I hope Moog let you keep that grandmother. It would be sweet to see you mod it, especially since it has that 1/8th mini jack for the reverb inside.
Really hope we get to see this again next year, it was great seeing you all together.
I think by that time I may be about 3/4 through everyone’s channel’s content from the event.
Lol I keep stumbling upon your videos.
Great stuff man
🤘
8:15 "Ohh, it's a mixer!" [groans]
Brilliant.
I would never smoke with you guys in the same room as my keyboards!
Glad you made a vid with that sweet soft spoken guy!
This was amazing. Thanks guys
The magpie cameo was when the video gets lit.
You did what I wanted to do but probably wouldn't have done it! Nice to see the innards...thanks!
I was biting my fingernails watching you guys rip that poor Grandmother apart!
Been waiting for this video for SO long
Oh man yes! If it wasn't 2:30am I would totally watch this right now.
You watched it anyway, didn't you?
That polyphony series was AWEOME (and this video is luvly)
Thank you!
I love this channel
So cool seeing inside a Moog. Like those circuit board images. Those would be cool on a shirt. envelopes, mixers, ladders, springs. Your heading to 200k sub's very quick.
Nice one! Great synth!
"Moog Grandmother everything about this feels hefty" I can see this appearing on some marketing blurb...
Loved the art work on the PCB
I love these types of videos when I as a kid I took everything apart.
When I first read the title I thought "Damn! Now he's destroying another synth"... Very happy to see you took it apart properly this time!
I love u guys👊🏽
Love how Mr. Sam Battle just gets straight into pulling this thing apart!! Great work
Super awesome to know the spring reverb tank can be replaced with a bigger one!
6:50 - this chip is probably ARM Cortex CPU. Very popular thing in these days :)
Every video of yours is just a panic attack waiting to happen ;D ;D . Like when you held both circuit boards in one hand and dropped one of them ;D. God, I'm getting anxious just watching it. Fantastic video as always.
I almost didn't watch the video but glad I did. It was informative and entertaining. I'm ordering my GM tomorrow. I just paid off my DSI Prophet Rev2-16 and the GM is on sale now. So, it's a no-brainer!
In the 70's we all called it a MOOOOG Synth. It wasn't until around the 1990's that I saw an interview with Bob Moog where the interviewer introduced him as Robert MOOOOG but Bob didn't bother to correct him. Rather, later on, Bob pronounced his synths several times as MOGUE. Today people are still using both pronunciations and I'm fine with it -- it's the modern version of, 'you say potato, I say potahto….' As always, cool vid, guys!!! Love it when Magpie crashes the vids too!!!
Can't believe I missed this one. I watch all of these guys.
When look Mum no computer and his friends come over, guitar players be like yo hide the fender spring reverb, and hide the ampegs
I am glad yall did this cause i wanted to see this but did not want to do this.
Love he format of this video
For a brief second, I was wondering about that „semi-modular“ to your right...suddenly, I felt bad.
Brilliant!
Love it!
So good show, more of that :)
My most satisfying purchase so far
This is awesome.
7:05: "I have this fear of it breaking..."
"Well we all have that, I'm just stupid."
LMAOOOO so good
Excellent
Good job, guys! ;-)
I actually have to check the connections on my spring reverb tank because it stopped working properly, so this was fun AND very very helpful
excited to see you attach a full size plate reverb to the back of that
That "mixer" doodle looks exactly like the head of K-9 from Dr Who, bro! Reflect on that deeper truth. :)
And it's upside down, how weird is that? :-P
LMAO at you flashing all the stuff on the screen!!!
11:56 That's just so geeky. :-D
I just got a Grandmother about 10 days ago. Last weekend my friend who's an incredible scratch DJ/producer came over and sampled about 70 minutes of sounds off of it. Can't wait to see what he does with it! About the spring tank - I think you'd need to ensure that any replacement tank has the same (or at least close) impedance as the stock one. If it's too far off, you'll at best change the response curve of the reverb control, or at worst have something that does respond no matter where it's set. Another thing - it looked like the spring tank is connected with regular ol' RCA cables. That opens up possibilities of some interesting modifications. I suppose the stock reverb out point kinda covers that, but someone smarter than me could probably come up with some really good ideas.
Cool video. Several Moog synths have the ladder stencil graphic in it. Elektron has space invaders inside the original A4.
Hope it’s not my grandma which I sent to Thomann for repairs couple of weeks ago ha ha
3:17 "Get the knobs off" would be a good song title. Chorus could be your gatekeeping voice :)
I don’t know why, but this reminded me of will it blend.
"I can't get out of this, can I". Nope, you give 'em a screwdriver. He's taking everything apart ;)
I'm digging the filterdesign. From what I could pick up of the layout, looks like either a switched cap design, or like you said, ladder filter. Man, MAT02's are really expensive these days, argh..
SSM2212 is a pretty good replacement
MOAR B STOCK!
Yeah, checking thomann right now for a butchered rolli.
Oooo makes me want to mod the verb jacks to the outside so I can interchange different sized tanks...
This is a sick video, the crazy mad synth scientist VS the very calm father of moog history. Thank you for this, still giggling a bit :-)
Unbolting a working Moog is like a horror movie to me...
9:00...yep, it’s all about your induction, transition and capacity array that determines the output...so yes, you are correct about using the transistors to match the frequency and a capacitor to clean up the signal ...I do believe the induction determines the amplitude and therefore the amplification.
I love the random magpie appereance
What's inside Grandmother? Werther's Originals and Scotch Mints mostly.
I love you mate.
holy hell, that bass at the beginning was nice
Awesome
Tear appart this Moog One in the background !
At 1:25 his face is like that of a man who is undressing a bride who is not his to undress.
Amiga's had doodles on their circuit boards too :)
There are two envelopes. main is ADSR, switch left controls VCA. Second is an XR, switch in middle position for VCA fast attack with controlled release. The envelope can loop if you patch the ENV+ to Trig in when a note is being played. Occasionally it fails to trigger and stops :)
So Behringer doesn't have to be "ashamed" of using newer more stabile components. It really seems that the warmth comes from the mixer on the GrandMother. A good design based on decades of knowledge, not just a replica. I'll go back to my Sub37 and see how it compares to this. I kind of like the layout of GrandMother better than the MiniMoog/Mogue.
It's awesome you got keanu reeves on ur channel
What I gather from this is that it would be a trivial matter to break out the send and return of the spring tank, to plug into whatever you damn well please. Am I on the right track here?
A reverb tank needs a circuit to drive it (kind of like driving a speaker) and another to reamplify the signal, so you couldn't just plug a signal straight into the tank, but there are actually patch points for the reverb in and out on the synth already.
@@plateoshrimp9685I should've phrased that better, sorry.
I actually meant more along the lines of being able to freely replace the internal reverb tank. What I surmised is that I could just put a couple more holes in the case, unplug the cables going to and from the tank, break those out, and hook them to whatever external something-or-other I fancied. Is that doable?
Mark looks so uncomfortable watching the synth get taken apart.
THIS IS BLASPHEMY
I like the Stranglers!
I also like Simon.😎👍
Ali G made a great addition to this episode. Ice cube trays make great keepers for the bolts and knobs
Yes sir!
I would watch the hell out of a podcast/show where it's just people building and fixing synths while discussing synth history. Just sayin'
Check out Syntaur!
SWEET KNOB SHIRT!!!!!!
Available at the Automatic Gainsay CZcams page... :D
Take apart a seaboard, its broken. Take apart a Moog, discover a bounty of mod options.
This synth is fun to play
'love it! & 'thanks for the fun 'breakdown' too...
(p.s. what's the gray thingie in the back under the lamp?)
Jeez-US!! That’s no way to treat your old Grandmama!
"If I don't punish the keys, I don't feel like I've earned the music."
Awesome.
Cool! Doty's shirt pot looks 3d.
Funniest silkscreening I ever saw on a circuit board :-D
off the thumbnail "WHATS INSIDE GRANDMA?" im guessing Bob Moogs grandpops ;)
Currently looking around the house for shit to sell so I can buy one of these.
Do you still have two kidneys?
Behringer loves this video..
It's 3:27 am rn. Worth it
Like the old tektronix analog storage oscilloscope where there was a cleaning lady in the schematic.
I cried. A lot.
