Fairbanks Morse, Type RE, 50 Horsepower Engine

This rare engine is preserved in the power plant at the Mt. Wilson Observatory, high in the mountains above Los Angeles, California. The engine was purchased by George Ellery Hale in 1911 to generate electricity for his 60 inch telescope. Many astronomical discoveries were first observed at Mt. Wilson, and important research is still being conducted today. The observatory grounds are open to the public, and many special events are held throughout the year.
