      You'll need some very fine coral sand, acrylic paint and a paint roller. Mix 3 colors, first a light brown and paint the whole rock. Blow a bit of coral sand onto the still wet paint so it will stick. Let dry. Then mix a dark purple and paint again (but not the entire rock) and again blow a bit of coral sand into the wet dark purple. Let dry. Finally mix a light purple for the highlights.

  • @tylerl.4699
    @tylerl.4699 Před 3 lety +1

    Great content man, but I have a question. Super glue supposedly deteriorates in saltwater over time. I think that's why they suggest gluing and puttying frags if you want them to stay in place (because eventually the glue gets worn down and loses its effect). Do you know if the same will happen here? Is there anything about the chemical reaction that prevents that deterioration?

    • @firsttimereefertv1588
      @firsttimereefertv1588  Před 3 lety +3

      Thanks mate! This process I feel is completely different to glueing frags. With frags the glue consistency is thicker which therefore means the purity is lower as there has been a thickening agent added. The glue is use is 97% pure cyanoacrylate and it wicks into the powder that cause a chemical reaction to set. Unlike coral glue that stays as a blob of glue. Im confident over time that there will be no issues but will certainly report if there are any! I know other have used this method and their scape is still rock solid 4-5 years on. I question if putty would even last that long without cracking!

    i am planning on doing this for my 15g peninsula waterbox build! i am about to buy the marco rock from BRS. How many pound of rock will you think i need to create a nice size negative space centerpiece for the tank?? also since the tank is so small do you think i can get away with just superglue or will i need the epoxy/mortar as well ?

      Fantastic you will love the marco rock! I would think 2 pound of base rock and 2 pound of shelf rock should be more tha sufficient. If you use the method i shared in this video you wont need mortar or epoxy!

    I just don't trust superglue for an aquascape. I mean it's ok for small rubble, but for big jobs I use E-Marco 400. Nice scape though bro for sure!!

    • @firsttimereefertv1588
      @firsttimereefertv1588  Před 3 lety

      Time will tell on how long this will last but from my research there seems to be no issues. Emarco400 is definitely very strong but also allows for slight flex to avoid breaking. But the process of mixing the product, short working times and mess afterwards doesn't make it my top choice. Thanks of watching!

    • @Harolddespui
      @Harolddespui Před 3 lety

      Superglue alone is rubbish, but the trick is combined with powder you're basically making speed-cement which bonds like crazy. The fact you can't break it on the joints anymore tells me enough that this is very secure.

  • @anchor4346
    @anchor4346 Před 3 lety +1

    My experience has been that as the rock 'wets' the joint comes loose from the CA glue.. and falls apart eventually, especially when using sand as a filler... Epoxy is much better at those joints.

      @firsttimereefertv1588  Před 3 lety

    • @Harolddespui
      @Harolddespui Před 3 lety

      I guess you haven't drenched the filler sand enough with glue, or used a too thick glue so it couldn't fully soak in.

    Hey buddy, I’ve got a new 7 foot system coming and love what you’ve done with this. Did you find any issues with using Marco rock over time and has it started to coraline up yet? Biggest concern is how long it will look nasty for as I’ve always used real reef but love the idea of producing something like this for a long term mega scape. Have the joins also held?

    • @firsttimereefertv1588

      Hey mate! Nice work on a 7’ tank! I love the marco rock and have no regrets! Hasnt started to coraline as i havent run lights yet but its already has a biofilm over it and isnt stark white. That was one of my main concerns using this rock but im still happy with my decision! Joins have held without any issues too!
