I discuss my thoughts on Disney's halfhearted limited theatrical release of the FOURTH SPECIAL EDITION of RETURN OF THE JEDI into a handful of select theaters with all of the quality issues that plague theater presentations nationwide. This is especially frustrating and truly sad given that this is also the 40th anniversary of THX as a program meant for ensuring a cinematic quality standard in all theaters.
And of course if that wasn't enough Disney couldn't be bothered to release the film on it's actual anniversary date of May 25th which is the true Star Wars day.

As a purist, I felt exactly as you do. For the same reasons, I avoided the 40th "re-release" of The Empire Strikes Back. However, after hearing that Jedi made $5 million, playing on less than 500 screens, I decided to seek it out. It had a bigger per theater average than Super Mario Brothers last weekend. After hearing what a massive attendance this film had over the weekend, I realized that not only had it been 26 years since I'd seen the Special Editions on the big screen, but that unlike me, many audiences today had never seen this in a theater. Its never again going to look and sound as great in the theater as it did back when I saw it in 1983 in 70mm 6-track Dolby, but I was lucky that one of the theaters playing near me projected it in AMC Prime, a premium presentation. I had a really good audience and for the first time in a while found myself paying attention to the film, a film I know so well and sometimes don't enjoy as much because I'm so familiar with it. I'm also happy fans came out to show Disney that we're not happy with the current state of Star Wars. That classic Star Wars is still the best, even though this version isn't its original form. P.S. I have never been a film of the 1997 special edition sound mixes. There were too many changes I didn't agree with. Music cues shifted around, sound effects, dialogue, you name it. I mean, Princess Leia shooting at Stormtroopers in the original film, and instead of that traditional blaster sound effect, it was replaced with that 44 magnum sound we normally hear in a Dirty Harry film? Come on. Outside of the original theatrical mixes, my favorites are what Ben Burtt put together for the 1993 laser discs. Matrix sound yes, but a nice composite of what I remember from the original theatrical releases.

I get what you mean about giving it a try and having a theater experience with SW again.
However Leia’s 44 Magnum blaster is from the Star Wars mono mix and one of the mono mix elements they brought into the 97SE mix.
The 93 Definitive 2.0 surround home remixes are really good and supposedly based around the 70mm mix for each film with just a tweak or two and made for Dolby surround home theater standards of the time.

I used to go to the theater all the time. I can just remember seeing the original Star Wars back in '77 when I was 7 or 8. I remember seeing Aliens in theaters when no one knew what it was. Still the best theater experience I've had. But as time went on it became less and less special. Advances in home theaters got better and I became less impressed with huge, massive screens and ear blasting poorly mixed sound. The last movie I saw in theaters was The Tree of Life back in 2011. I realized that it wouldn't get any better than that and I stopped going. I thought I would miss it but I haven't. Now I have a great set up ,with a really nice Denon AVR-X4400H that I picked up for $1200,and a 7.4.2 set up and It's been great. You can even go better than that now if you want and it's crazy how far home theater equipment has come since the days of black and white Curtis Mathis TVs that were more cabinets that TV. Theaters will always be around in some form or another but they aren't doing themselves any favors at this point.

You are SO right about theater quality being in the toilet now. Had so many issues with using the wrong aspect ratio and bad sound lately. I remember getting to see a sneak preview screening of the 97 special edition of Return of The Jedi with my stepdad and that experience is forever etched in my memory. It was considered an early birthday present as I was turning 12 in about 2 months. I was lucky enough to have borrowed the original trilogy on VHS from my stepdads friends when I was about 10 or 11ish but Return of The Jedi was my introduction to Star Wars at 8. The sound in that theater was glorious, you really felt it! I refuse to see this or any other re-release by Disney. I only saw the one of The Phantom Menace when Lucasfilm was trying to give all of the films the 3D treatment. Boy that was awful. I have the Definitive collection and that special edition boxset and love them but I will always choose the 4k77 and 4k83 presentations until something ever becomes official.

Where i saw Jedi it wasn't first run or TAP program aligned. It was 1985 at a 2 screen theater Jordan Marsh. Carebears movie was sold out we were given free tickets to see JEDI. Where i was sitting you were off kilter from the screen. The sound also wasn't very good. Its still left a profound impression on me.

  • @dr.impossibleofcounterpunc1984

I was blessed to see two of the original Star Wars films at the London Premiere screenings. The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi at the Odeon Leicester Square. Never saw Star Wars, just a bit too young. The closest I got to Star Wars was on 20th Century-Fox Video Pre-Cert in the early 1980's in Britain. Lucas never really had any intentions of properly restoring the original trilogy of films. Those LaserDisc versions were as far as Lucas went back in the day. Lucas's revisionist attitude was his undoing in my book. The Special Editions were a abomination, and I never once bought into buying the revised trilogy back in the day, but many did. Fooled and once again tempted by the considerable marketing campaign pushed out by Fox, but like you said, the presentations were beautifully re-constructed, I was so disgruntled and miffed with Lucas, but Lucas created the films for himself, and gave them over to the fans and wider cinema audiences, and then did the unthinkable, and the rest was history. Lucas sells out, and hands over a viable franchise to a new breed of executives who decide to inject their own brand of agenda driven muck. I can watch the trilogy without any regard to the Disney tripe. You just block it out. Enjoy the ride and try to imagine Star Wars looking the way it should, if only....To dream the impossible dream in a distant streaming galaxy far, far away.

You brought up great points regarding how many times the Star Wars trilogy was changed multiple times, re-issues onto home media and the way the sound was remixed many times. Back in last May, I still wanted to see Return of the Jedi regardless of what edition it was and I couldn’t miss it, because it is still my second favorite Star Wars film behind A New Hope. I still had a beautiful time seeing one of my favorite movies on the big screen and I didn't really mind the changes made over the years. Again, you still covered great points and this was still a very good commentary. You got yourself a new subscriber. 🙂

I saw Return of the Jedi on its opening weekend in 1983 in 70mm Six-Track Dolby Stereo. I saw it again Monday evening with my 9 year old daughter and wife. Nothing, absolutely nothing, compares to the awesomeness of that 1983 presentation. Even though it was a 35mm blow up to 70mm, the film resolution and audio quality were both stunning. Monday night in DCP was just...okay. It looked soft and flat. The audio was just...there. Passable, but blah. It's amazing that 40 years later we've backtracked on what is considered "high quality" in movie theaters. Of course, the Special Edition bits were very annoying, distracting, and out-of-place. My daughter, who hasn't seen Episodes 1 - 3, asked who the young man standing next to Yoda and Ben was. Of course, she didn't know, because it made absolutely no sense that Luke would see the younger version of his father instead of what he looked like when he died.

I live in the UK an over the last 30 years it's been sad to see the Americanisation of the cinematic experience. Much to the detriment of film lovers. Small independent cinemas have all-but been wiped out and replaced with big chains owned by shady asset management conglomerates. They've largely moved out of urban centres and gorgeous centuries old, purpose-built auditoriums and into ugly retail parks.
I remember when Chris Nolan sent out 35mm prints of Dunkirk. I want to see one and it was a blurry, out of focus mess because nobody on the staff knew how to handle 35mm film. Because they aren't trained in anything except how to sell fast food. Even the rare arts council subsidised arthouse cinemas are pretty hit and miss when it comes to exhibition. Everyman Cinemas are supposed to be our premium cinema chain but really their value-added is that they have nicer decor and catering.

First generation SW fan here, although I was only 5 when I saw SW for the first time here in UK in 1978. By the time 1997 came around, I was able to see SW in one of the few THX TAP certified cinemas here (a round trip of 4 hours to see). And it was absolutely glorious. Bought the NTSC SE laserdisc set, also glorious. And since then its been a downhill slide with newer revisions, varying picture quality and issues and the same with the sound mixes. On the cinema presentation front, some cinemas/screens have kept up the quality, usually meaning a 2 hour round trip to get to one of the decent ones. Otherwise my cinema going has dropped off sharply in the last decade, in part due to declining standards. I too have experienced underlit bulbs in the celluloid film era, blown speaker cones etc.
I did see the ROTJ SE 40th rerelease and as much as I enjoyed seeing the film on the big screen at a good cinema/screening, it also serviced to amplify the issues I have with the sound mix, the colour timing and the digital revisions upon digital revisions stacked atop one another. The difference in experience of the ROTJ 40th anniversary vs the Nolan ‘unrestored’ 70mm presentation of 2001 A Space Odyssey in 2018 was stark, the latter being an almost transcendently good viewing experience.

And many of these CZcams reaction videos have similar comments when they watch the original Chris Reeve Superman films, saying the fx are good "for the 70s."

I know it's the 40th Anniversary of THX and I know it isn't used as often as it used to, but I think they should open new THX Ultimate Cinema theaters across America and probably create a new logo in honor of the anniversary. One place I can think of is where the old IMAX theater once stood at Newport on the Levee where I live. The IMAX is now part of the AMC and they have a Dolby Cinema too. So I figured for THX Ultimate Cinema, they could either place it in the outside building where the IMAX once stood or place it in Screen 20 on the right side of the building while Screen 1 on the left side has a Prime at AMC theater. Do you think these ideas would be amazing to add to the AMC cinema at Newport on the Levee? If you agree, I think we should find a way to ask the people who work at that particular location to add a Prime at AMC in Screen 1 and a THX Ultimate Cinema in Screen 20. So what do you say?

I thought that the movie itself in terms of the special effects and set design all looked very good. The only things that I found grating were some of the CGI and audio changes from the blu-ray release and from the earlier special editions, such as the new song numbers at Jabba's palace and Vader yelling "no!!!" as he picks up the Emperor and tosses him into the abyss. I am not disagreeing with any of your points though. You can spend your money more wisely than buying a movie ticket.

    • @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
      @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader  Před 10 měsíci +1

It’s a bit of a complicated answer, depending on what you’re looking for and what formats you have access to. For the most unaltered official release version that is actually letterboxed you have to go to the Laserdisc format and the best overall budget option are the original fox special widescreen editions. The technidisc reissue of Star Wars in that cover design is the best looking transfer of Star Wars on the format.
For DVD, the best option os still unfortunately the 2006 limited bonus DVDs, which are essentially just ports of the 1993 definitive collection Laserdisc masters with lossy audio. So you can get those masters on laser disc with better PCM audio for usually much less than you can get the 2006 DVDs anymore.
But there are definitely imitations in that master and it’s not completely original. The one thing they did do on those 2006 DVDs was splice in an original 1977 title crawl on to the Laserdisc master weirdly.

Releasing the original 1977, 1980 & 1983 theatrical versions of the films was the only reason I cared about Disney buying the property. I had no interest in watching any of Disney produced star wars films.
More than 10 years on, we're still without a release for those first 3 movies in the form they should be seen in. Disney's complete lack of interest in legally putting those versions back out on the market despite the massive interest on the part of the consumer and the relative easy of restoring the films, proves definitely that Disney only sees star wars the way that George Lucas ultimately did; as a cash cow.
I despise any version of these movies from 1997 and on and I have long since lost all patience for watching any special edition version for any of the 3 films. It is extremely asinine that the "Original Theatrical Unaltered Versions" of The Star Wars Trilogy still have not been restored in HD and released on Blu-Ray and 4K Disc. I too have been saying for years now that the only way there will be another successful home video release of the Original Trilogy if the unaltered versions are included.
When you really think about it, George Lucas didn't really have the right to create the "Special Edition" versions of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi because he didn't direct them.
Over the years I have done lots of research regarding the creation of the Special Edition versions from 1997, and even though they had the unnecessary alterations made, the photochemical restoration process that had to be performed on the trilogy was properly done. The restorations that have been performed since then have flaws although I haven't seen the newer transfers that the 4K Disc and remastered Blu-Ray editions from 2020 are sourced from.
I've always preferred the unaltered versions of the Original Trilogy. A couple of the reasons for why I absolutely still love watching them is because first off they were the first versions I ever saw of the trilogy and it reminds me of how great they already were to begin with. The special and visual effects in the unaltered versions were superb!
I still have my 2-Disc Limited Edition DVD sets from 2006 that have the unaltered versions sourced from the 1993 Video Masters that were used for the Definitive Collection. The 2.0 Surround Mixes from 1993 are still my favourite audio mixes for the trilogy. Those 2-Disc DVD sets are quite difficult to find now.

One last time was the line and they really meant it. It was intended to be never released again. The 2006 bonus disc happened because of Jim Ward. I think George really meant for it to remain in obscurity. He said its on VHS if you want to see it.

    • @Riddler95

Apparently the original plan was to create the special edition of just Star Wars. Creating special edition versions of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi was an afterthought.
In 1988, George Lucas spoke at Congress regarding how he was against altering movies. He even mentioned that Black & White movies could be colourized using computers and the soundtracks could be changed but it was wrong to do that because classic movies need to be preserved in their original form so future generations could experience them like that.
Then that very same George Lucas later on would heavily alter Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jed more than once. Then he intentionally has withheld the unaltered versions from the fans.

@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader , the film exists in separate pieces. Lucas said so himself in Anatomy of a Dewback he saved everything. What we have is a 1997 negative intercut with the new cgi and recomped effects. But nothing was destroyed or thrown away. He just deliberately made sure the original cuts have no restoration print so they can't be released again. It could he done.

Greetings from Santiago de Chile. I really wish that someday Disney decide to license Star Wars to a label boutique that could -once and for all- release NON Special Edition in 4K. These could apply to some titles of their catalogue are not interesting for the "Disney+ Audience" that don't care about aspect ratio, audio mixes, etc. I know this could be a little expensive but is better to have the work done right for home video where you can enjoy it with people that really care. Here in Chile many theaters have decided to project movies dub in latin spanish and I really can't stand it. Is not the same to hear the voice of Christian Bale giving an Oscar level performance than of another actor that dubs Homer Simpson, Harrison Ford or even John Wayne. And if that is not enough punishment, many english versions are projected in late screenings which is a real pain if you leave far away from the movie theater. So, I prefer to invest my money in buying 4K and stop worrying because the chilean theater owners would not change their mind any time soon. Adiós amigo.

10:53 There will be some sort of clause in the merger contract that forbids Disney from altering Lucas' work, especially when you consider Lucas is a big supporter for artists not having their work altered or ruined after they are no longer attached to it. Kathleen Kennedy briefly hinted towards it in an interview during a red carpet event for one of the Disney sequels (TFA I think). Hoping or waiting for the day Disney release the 'unaltered' editions of the movies is just a pipe dream, not just because of the legal and creative aspects but also the logistical aspects of it (for the special editions the original negative was altered, etc).

    • @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader

The rumors and quotes about the negatives being altered or conformed, is actually hogwash and has been proven so a number of times. They also have all the theatrical mixes digitally archived already, and have had so for years.
I mentioned that about possibly being a contract clause out of speculation, but the only thing we’ve heard officially is that their position is not to go against his wishes. So it seems like there’s nothing actually stopping them, but I did want to consider any potential hurdles.

There are news segments from the release of the SEs that shows how they took the negative apart to be washed and then recomposited to create the new editions.

Agree completely. I hate the special editions and while the image from the 90s special editions do look far better than the current 4ks you are spot on with the cgi being hd or 1k. When you watch the dvd discs I have you can see the how fuzzy the image is compared to everything else in the scene.
I went to a Theater In south texas and the image for Halloween ends was horrible. When I bought the 4K and watched at home I was blown away with how milky the blacks were and just how little resolution the big screen was when I saw just how crisp and clear the disc was from home.

Regarding the SPECIAL EDITIONS: I will NEVER understand the obsession of certain SW fans bemoaning George Lucas for his Special Edition changes, and their preference to watching bootleg "despecialized" versions instead... To those people all I can say is this:
I am a 1st generation SW fan who has been there from the very beginning... I saw Star Wars in 1977 at age 10... I lived through the phenomenon of the Original Trilogy, and I am the BIGGEST SW fan that you could ever find... I lived it and breathed it... and I am here to say that I have NO PROBLEM AT ALL with the Special Editions... I absolutely LOVE the changes that Lucas made, and the VERY FEW "minor changes" that I maybe am not as big a fan of have NEVER made me want to seek out some fan-made bootleg (which I hate to break it to you, but those aren't 100% "original" either!)... And even if the original versions ever DID become commercially available, I would STILL prefer to watch the Special Editions!... What a remarkable gift from Lucas those are!... It is just funny to me that if there was EVER someone that might be "offended" by the SE's and would want to go on and on about it, I MIGHT be a prime candidate, right?... Well, I am NOT.
However, In the end, we are ALL Star Wars fans, and that's all that matters!
PS: I LOVE "Jedi Rocks", and Hayden's force ghost at the end... PERFECTION!
And John Williams' new end victory music is MUCH better than "Yub Nub"!
    HAPPY MAY THE FOURTH EVERYBODY!

I get that sentiment but the greatest issue is the suppression of the original films in their original form and on top of that the hard work of the people who made them has been changed, tweaked or even erased.
It’s fine if someone wants to make a new version of a film but the original edition should ALWAYS be kept in circulation. I think Lucas made a similar mistake with THX 1138 which is in my opinion ruined in the 2004 director’s cut.
