Secret of the Incas (1954) Kino Lorber Blu-ray Review
#secretoftheincas #indianajones #bluray
I review SECRET OF THE INCAS on its North American home video debut, found on this Kino Lorber Blu-ray release. Taken from a new 4K scan of separation elements by Paramount this finally presents one of the greatest influences on the Indiana Jones series for fans to enjoy.
However this was not a full restoration and the new color grading is more than a bit suspicious.
It shouldn’t have taken this long to get the film in an official release but when compared with the old master on the Imprint Australian Blu-ray one can tell there has been a color shift and that this new master is filled with marks and light wear.
Still it is otherwise a lovely presentation of a film stuck in video hell for decades and the new work done for the audio and scanning+realigning the color separations is well done.

I hate to hear you're having this problem. The only 4K player that never seems to have a problem is the PS5, but it doesn't offer Dolby Vision. For $500, that player should last at least a decade.

The DVD I own of this film should not be the best possible version to own. I cannot understand why Lucas persists in hiding the original versions of his films. There are THREE different versions of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" on one Blu-ray set, but Lucas insists on only making his latest version of a film available.

Shit, the Animaniacs DVDs are on the rotted list. Does that include the final volume and Wakko's Wish as well? I replaced the first three volumes a couple of years ago, and I purchased Volume 4 and Wakko's Wish either the day of release or months later. Is Volume 4 and the aforementioned movie safe?

I think so, but I can’t remember when they were manufactured. I know all of the initial volumes with the really lovely impressive digipacks are unfortunately Rotter titles potentially. To be on the ultra safe side you can pick up the complete series basic repackage which generic art and it should be the same discs but without rot inside.

Sadly no, and that is standard Warner practice. It’s extremely rare that they do a disc recall program and typically the only thing they will do when a problem is bad enough is quietly fix it for streaming versions only and not say anything.

You’ve put together an interesting, in-depth, extensive commentary on one of my favourite Bond films. No, you won’t believe this, but I place it in my top eight films. Among the ones hugging the bottom of my list are “Live And Let Die” and “Man With The Golden Gun” - in fact, anything directed by Guy Hamilton; four films that have a genuine made-for-TV look! How fortunate that Sean Connery ended his time as Bond with “Never Say Never Again,” rather than Hamilton’s Vegas-based carnival! (He was in better shape, too!) For this old Bond fan, “Never Say Never Again” was worth the wait, after all the back-and-forth. To those who complain that it was so different from the Eon series, my response is, “Thank Heaven!” One needn’t be a first-year law student to understand why it couldn’t include the “James Bond Theme” or the gun-barrel opening. Michel Legrand offered a fine, stylish score; the shark trap and the romantic French motif are his best moments. The title song, performed by Lani Hall, has a Bondian feel. (It was bound to have class, being produced by Herb Alpert and Sergio Mendez.) John Barry’s “Thunderball” score was loud, repetitive, and tiresome. Despite the creative, legal, and budgetary problems, this film is tighter, more coherent, and better-paced than “Thunderball.” The changes are imaginative and fun - the depiction of Q, for example. The locations serve the story, rather than being a Bahamas travelogue. The characters are better-drawn and have more depth than the dubbed, poorly developed ones in “Thunderball.” (Thanks to Connery, who had final say over casting and script.) The cinematography and production design were elegant, never overwhelming the actors. Director Irvin Kershner showed grit and determination, and did a fine job under pressure. One point left out of your introduction: McClory had rights to more than “Thunderball“ after 1976. In fact he, Ian Fleming, and Jack Whittingham had written ten treatments and scripts. Technically, “Warhead” fit into the terms of his original deal with Eon. Not surprisingly, Uncle Cubby and Company shat themselves over any possible loss of profits (more so with Harry Saltzman out of the picture)! They even spread the BS that McClory was plotting to take over Bond entirely. They may not have expected to win their lawsuit, but they were happy to cause plenty of production headaches. The unsung hero of this adventure was Jack Schwartzman, who dared to take on the challenge. For all of Connery’s complaining, it was Schwartzman who put the deal together, succeeding where McClory failed. Schwartzman faced them down in the London High Court. Neither he nor Kershner criticized Connery in interviews; in fact they had only praise. The result was Connery’s best Bond since “From Russia With Love,” with its emphasis on character and plot, plus action that suits the story. It was a refreshing change from the tripe of the Moore era, and received far better reviews. The opening weekend set the record for Bond films at the time (October 1983). The overall profits were only $25 million behind “Octopussy,” so Old Cubby could take a deep breath! As someone of Indian origin, my contempt for “Octopussy” carries an additional edge. I’m eternally grateful to Lorenzo Semple, Dick Clement & Ian LaFrenais for not including lines like, “Here, this should keep you in curry for awhile.” No Tarzan yells, no gorilla suits, no clown disguises! My gratitude goes to everyone involved in the making of “Never Say Never Again.”

Going back to the camera masters for the scan, means that the titles are no longer on the footage. This is why the titles were redone. It's probably for consitancy of footage. The other choice is to scan a print that has the titles, which will mean a drop in quality, either for the entire tile sequence, or each time the titles come on screen. It's a choice. Paramount seem to have gone for image quality above originality in this case.
