  • This video was taken as part of the Japanese tea Japanese Tea Zukushi 2022 Autumn event, held in Yuito building, Nihonbashi, Tokyo. The "Japanese Tea Drinking Experience" included an open-air tea "Fukutoku Tea Ceremony", conducted by the Obaku_mai Tea School Tokyo Branch.
While I am very familiar with Sado / Chanoyu which involves Matcha tea, the more casual art form of Senchado (which uses Sencha), was less familiar to me. Yet despite this, I could recognise the similarities and differences between to the two traditions.
The history of Senchado started with the priest Gekkai Genshō (known as “Baisaō, the “old tea seller”) and was handed down from teacher to student. It was made more formal through Kaoru Nakai, who taught the art at the Senryū-ji Buddhist temple in Kyoto. Her style of Senchado was performed for the imperial family on special occasions.
As I mentioned before, Sencha-do is different from Matcha-do, as the latter uses powdered green tea, where as the former uses Japanese tea leaves. The tools are also different, with Sencha-do using more elaborate, Chinese inspired pottery. However both traditions value the principles of treating guests sincerely and encouraging a calm mind.
    Please enjoy -
