    I've been researching quail for a couple months. I was torn between coturnix and button. I wanted them for meat and egg production, but also to enjoy inside the house. I learned about the smell of the coturnix, but also the very, very small eggs of the button. But the buttons are so cute and colorful, want them! I finally decided to have both! I'm going to build an outside larger aviary for the jumbo coturnix (meat and eggs) and a small inside aviary for the buttons (pets and a few eggs).

    I wish I would have had my aviary ready when I got my first quail...they lived in a rabbit hutch for several months before I was able to build an aviary. They LOVE aviaries! Always give yourself more time to build things than you think they will take. Something I wouldn't change is having them in aviaries and providing an enclosed sand box for them, they LOVE sand boxes!

    There's a lot of excellent advice in this video. If I might add my two-penny worth:
    1. What I would have liked to know before getting quail: There is nothing like "hands on" experience. I researched quail-keeping quite a lot but I would have loved to visit someone who already had quail beore I got mine. Surprisingly, there are lots of chicken keepers nearby (I have those too) but finding a quail-keeper was hard work. I can only echo the comments expressed in the video that having friends/neighbours who are also "into" quail-keeping would be a great help.
    2 The one thing I wouldn't change is: learning to hatch eggs and keeping dedicated cages for colour-specific family groups. I'm interested in selective breeding so having a number of groups (1 male to 5 females) gives me a steady stream of eggs from a specific line. I can then rotate the male to the next cage in line and have a whole new line. The colours I keep are calico and black. I'd love to branch out into others but I just don't have the space for anymore

    Can i put a little sand in my brooder? My quail are 9 days old?

    • @WhiskeyTangoFarms
      @WhiskeyTangoFarms  Před rokem +4

      I wouldn’t give them sand until they are adult age. Around 8-10 weeks old. I would not suggest to ever put sand in the brooders.

    If you keep them in the garage, and they poop alot, does it make your garage smell really bad?

    • @WhiskeyTangoFarms
      @WhiskeyTangoFarms  Před rokem +2

      If you change the trays often you should be ok. I would recommend every three days but if you have a fan in there and the manure is dry you could go longer.

      Yes, it will stink!! Like the other comment, clean every couple days and you should be fine.

    I dont know if I can kill them for meat. I probably stick with eggs only

      Culling birds isn 't easy and I completely understand. There is a lot of people only raise for eggs. They are also fun to watch. They're interesting little birds.
