Traded in my Harley for this. Best decision ever made
was looking at a 2012 to 2017 honda goldwing but my interest is this BMW GTL CANT WAIT TO BUY ONE
I am the first to comment in 2019. Awesome! I just pick up a 2015 GT it is the top of the food chain in sport touring bikes. I like and agree with all of your review. There are a few somewhat negative things that I should mention. Just to be fair of anyone considering a K bike. First thing is acclimation to the controls; it takes some time to get used to and find all of the controls available to you. At night is the worst time to ride this bike if you do not have the buttons memorized as there is no back lighting in the switches. Just stay clam and ride on. The seat high is much higher than the cruiser I moved from. A strong kick is required to send the leg over. Finding a service manual is very difficult for this model and brand. BMW has done a good job only making them available to spendy customers. The K1600 requires valve clearance checks and adjustments to the bucket and shim type valve spacers. Not a problem but not as convenient as adjustable tappets or better; hydraulic valve lash adjusters. I always service my own bikes but if I ever needed a dealer the nearest is two hours away. The saddles bags innerds are sloped which does not aid in retaining its contents when open if you do not have liners. I am working on a foam spacer bottom solution for that. Oh yes, almost forgot. I recently did an oil change and discovered there is a second oil plug beyond the first oil plug to drain the sump. Not nice BMW! It is necessary to use a long hex key and carfully fish the plug out of the drain plug hole. Wiskey, tango, foxtrot. No regrets though. This is the highest dollar most luxurious motorcycle I have ever owned. It has very long leg that I intend to put to good use.

thanks for the great review. I have a 2016 K1600 GTL Exclusive. I have ridden mine coast to coast (indirectly of course!!) For that application, I can't imagine a better bike. You have hit many many points. I pretty much agree with all of them. A couple of points I would like to reemphasize: Great suspension. I have had many 12 hour plus days. I'm convinced it helps tremendously. Great lighting package. Of all my bikes, I have the most confidence at night with this one. It really helps when planning a long day. Great range is a MUST for touring. Just my opinion, of course, this bike has it. Lastly, it handles foul weather very well. I wear a BMW GS Dry suit. I have experienced everything from 25 degrees to 107 degrees. Of course, my time spent in extreme conditions was limited. I never found myself in a weather situation that made me feel unsafe.
I've had BMW's from R100/7's to a K1600GT.I LOVE the 1600.
I have a GT. My favorite out of many BMW's over the years. I changed the windscreen, installed bar risers and the GPS.
It's a blast to ride.
Overall and excellent review. Being an owner now for almost 4 years I can say that I agree with most of your comments about the bike. Being large, it is not a bike for beginners, and for those that just want to toot around town. However, depending upon your riding skills, I find that even when going slow the bike is still quite manuverable, centered, and quite manageable. It is quite possible to do a Uturn within a diameter of 12 feet without putting a foot down, though you'll notice a substantial difference with a full tank of gas (7.5gals). Also, It sounds like you started your ride with the selective throttle control set at "Road". I don't know if you got to play with it (Rain, Road, & Dunamic), but the "Dynamic" selection will give you that kick in the pants throttle response, and pucker factor if you're not used to it. It's not a SuperDuke type response, but far better than any touring bike out there. Very enjoyable review.
As a returning rider I’m getting some miles on a HD street Bob before trading up to a GTL. The GTL weighs about 50 pounds more without bags so I figured it’ll be a manageable switch.

Keith, I'll tell you it is by far the best motorcycle I have riden. I ride is very smooth compared to the Harley. My 2012 Road Glide had so much wind buffering when riding it ways a pain to ride 8 or 9 hrs a day, not to mention the tractor like suspension. I here ya on roasting your legs on a Harley with the engine and pipes right there. I have no such problem with engine heat or wind buffering, due to the adjustable wind screen :-) . I like Harley, but it compares to an old 1970's muscle car, whereas the K1600GTL is more like a Lamborghini or Ferrari !!! The seating and position is really comfortable, but I found after half a day riding my knee's did feel tight some what. I fixed that problem by installing Ilium works engine guard and hwy pegs for the long distance ride, very comfortable riding now. I can take a corner without grinding floor boards like on the RG and really enjoy twisty roads like I've always dreamed of. Harley you just plain can't. The biggest thing I like about the GTL is it's many safety features, adaptive head light and suspension control. To be all honest I will never buy another Harley again as my main rider. If I win some money and can afford many different bikes, then I would have one in my collection. Hope this helps Keith.

Great review. A little clarification on the Hill Start Control/Assist. To engage it, one must pull the brake lever firmly until the "H" symbol appears on the display. At that point you are correct in that the bike will not roll back, and you can let off of the brake. Going is simply letting off the clutch and rolling on the throttle, if you need to roll on at all. Downshifting is optional with the six.

Thanks for posting as I enjoyed watching it. I currently ride a GS1200 but if I could get SWMBO to agree I would trade it in for a second hand one of these. Too much money for me living on a pension to buy new but boy do I need to get one of these before my biking days are over. Shame we don't have your size roads over here in the UK though. I also appreciate your comments about not thrashing it as someone will actually own it one day. That's both fair to the future owner and the dealer who has trusted you with it. Brilliant. Thanks Ted
I absolutely love mine... added the akropovic's, the GT sport seat, Clearwater fog lights and a few other farkles.... $35000+ with CA sales tax and not the least bit of regret. BTW, glad you didn't push the new motor... but trust me, in Dynamic mode when you get the RPMs above 5K, the power really kicks in! This thing has more torque than any bike out there except the V8 triumph.
Are the Clearwater lights worth changing out the factory lights ? I have a 2016 k1600 GT . I don't do a whole of night driving , but was just wondering if they were worth the extra cost .

I bought one of these recently (late 2019) after trading in one of my 1000cc sports bikes, as i wanted something more comfortable for bigger miles. I got the GT SE model and modded it with akrapovic cans, a bigger screen and a few other bits and pieces such as GPS - stand extenders- such as luxury hand made comfort seats in brown. I havent put a lot of miles on it yet as the weather in Ireland recently has been naff, but im looking forward to getting some miles up.
Love the engine, and the comfort and the masses of torque down low. its loaded with tech and is a beautiful bike to ride. I almost bought a goldwing, but the small 21 litre tank and poor luggage capacity put me off it. I like both to be fair but the BMW is a bit more exciting to ride - but only when you want it. It is happy cruising at 3,000 rpm all day, thanks for sharing your thoughts! (Interesting to hear about the clutch, the model i have has a rotating adjustment wheel you can change on the fly to tailor to your desires - same for front brake too).

Battley is fanastic. Hopped off my 1125CR and got to ride an S1000XR and 1200GS just for stopping by on a Saturday morning. Next bike will be a hard decision. Didn't know about them until I saw your vids, Duke--thanks.

I just returned from 3500 mile trip on the 2016 k1600 gtl exclusive... perfect in every respect and agree with review other than the "around town" use... I found the bike just as easy to handle around town as my other bikes and maybe, due to torque and power, even safer.

I just bought a GTL and I guess you are right. The more I ride it the more I get used to it. At the beginning I thought it wouldn't be for riding in and around town... but when you get used to it... it is. Love that bike for handling, power and sound. Ride safe
Great review. And really nice bike! Massive tho! Reminds me of when the Toyota Land Cruiser was the biggest SUV one could buy. Then Ford came out with the Excursion where you can almost park your Land Cruiser into its cargo hatch! I have a FJR. Which is huge to me. Until I saw a buddy’s Concours 14. Which dwarfed my FJR! You can almost fit the Connie into the K1600’s topcase! LOL!
This truly is a great bike, I have had one since 2012. Only complaint is like almost any bike, the stock seat leaves you pretty sore after a couple of hours. Russel Day Long or equivalent needed to give the rider the ability to keep up with this machine.
Because I am into touring at this later stage of my life, I just signed all the papers on a nice used 2013 Honda FB6. I don't know if I'll end up keeping both, but I had to see what this Honda is like, too. I really don't think you can go wrong with either one!

Nice review. Although I think you will have liked the BMW K1600GT more than the GTL. The GT has the same options, but it's sportier. It comes standard with side cases and the top case, which does not have the 'sofa', is optional. I'm currently riding the latest RT and would take the GT over the GTL or GTL Exclusive which in my opinion are touring bikes for maximum comfort, while I prefer sport touring. :)
I wanted a BMW Motorcycle for a long time and finally bought a new 2011 R1200RT that broke down 6 times in the three months I had it. Lemon Law'd it out and got a 2011 Harley FLTRU Road Glide - love it, but my BMW was so much better (wind, acceleration, radio, suspension) when it was not breaking down! Looking to upgrade my RG, and got that BMW itch again and thinking the K1600GTL, because 26k for an upgraded version of my bike is absurd for the tech you're getting. Saw the K1600B, too....

Hill assist happens when you grab the front break with a purpose while sitting still on a hill. It locks the breaks so you don't have to hold them anymore. When you start going again, power will tell computer to release the breaks.
And yes, it will wheelie if traction control is turned off.

To clarify, Hill Assist can be engaged by firmly grabbing the front brake. It'll work in gear or in neutral on a hill, but also on a flat surface. You can disengage the Hill Assist the same was as you engaged it, or you can just ride away. The option will also disengage when turning off the engine or kicking out the side stand (with or without the motorcycle in gear or neutral). You could say it's sort of a handbrake, but the manually explicitly mentions not to use it as a handbrake (if I'm not mistaken).
Nice review. One minor correction... your Super Duke has a little over 100 torque. The GTL with 129, has a bunch more; not less. That's why it feels decently quick ;)

@@leifandersson6808 how unusual! I've never heard of anyone having engine issues with an FJR. They go on forever.
VR Flight Sim Guy yes it is as a matter of fact. I used to be a Yamaha guy. Have had xv1600 Wild Star and xv1900 Stratoliner. Both very god bikes, especially the 1900. My 2016 FJR, which I bought new, was a real disappointment. Nowadays I own a K1600 GTL, 2018 new, and a Harley Davidson Road King Classic. Take care now and keep both wheels down!!!!🏍🏍

I rode one years ago maybe like a 2011-2012 ish model year. I liked it but the windscreen didn't work for me. Anything over about 50mph it created a cavity of pressure that pulled my head toward the front of the bike so it was like I had to fight to keep my head back the whole time. Other than that I really liked it. Maybe they have redone some of the aero to fix that. Engine and suspension as well as seat were all very nicely done.
I didn't experience that issue, so perhaps they have since made adjustments to mitigate the pressure bubble. It was an incredibly smooth machine for sure.
I find that if I am getting buffeted I can adjust the windscreen up or down slightly and change the airflow and quite often I can find that perfect place where I am not getting pushed or pulled. It's a great bike.

Too bad you had such a new one and couldnt really experience the Warp speed power. I own a K1600GT and honestly, it can scare you , especially between 3000-8000 rpm, hit and git a few gears and your doing 100+ in a hurry. But you really never hit the power band. Great review however, I traded my R1200RT in for it, and i agree it is a little big for just blasting around town. Just gives me a reason to get something else to go with it!
I would prefer the super Duke but this bmw is amazing too
I did a short walkaround of this bike at the dealership here and when I revved it, man was it smooth! I couldnt ride it that day though so it was very interesting to see your review. Nicely done!

+CodeNameABK I'm glad you enjoyed the review! Thanks for catching that on the torque - I was think in newton meters when I had the KTM number at 144 over the 130 on the k1600.
Ah yes, all these units and specs can get confusing at times :) So its 144Nm vs 175Nm :)
The BMW K1600GT/GTL indeed has less power than the KTM Super Duke but has more torque almost everywhere in the rev range.
It's also significantly heavier.

Great Video n keep up the Great reviews your doing! (#1) Btw, I'm 52 n bought a 2015 - red white n blue, New - K1300s BMW last Aug n Absolutely LOVE it! Financed it - 0 down - no payments for 3 months n now my payments are $425 a month n buy out is $10 k after 3 yrs. Bought side bags which are Very nice n have bag on back which is Great for storage n also use for a back rest for my girl friend n makes it Way more Comfortable for her. Got back from a 7,077 mile trip from LA - Sturgis with 9 other friends on Harleys - Wisconsin n back from Aug 3 - Oct 3rd last yr n after Sturgis they went back n I continued on. My BMW 1300 is the Bugatti of bikes - corners like a Porsche n rides like a Cadillac n Comfort mode n has Normal n Sport mode also. Cruising through Colorado n Utah for Endless miles @ 120 mph - 140 mph is breath taking n a Rush - because this bike is So Smooth n Comfortable n Feels way better because of long wheel base. I even had it to 160 mph n took off my left hand n rode with 1 hand for miles to see how it handled n No problem.. BTW - you have to work your way up to those speeds and say your Prayers - LOL... My average speed was 77 mph coming home from Wisconsin n Most Comfortable was 100 - because anything over 100 mph - the Cops can take you to jail n take your bike away - Lol ... I can't say enough Great things about this bike n because of the handle bar position - I ride with 1 hand all the time n sit mostly straight up n I'm 5 foot 11 ... . It also has Quick Shift - Shaft Driven - Long Wheel Base n Sooo Smooth - Comfortable n Powerful, sometimes I don't remember my girlfriends on back- cause it so smooth - Lol... Oh ya - Love the Heated grips. I just hit 20k miles after my trip n zero issues. (#2) After my first 3k service they let me take out the RR - 1,000 for the weekend n Loved it also - but is mostly for 1 person if your gal doesn't ride - Very Fast n Love the Brembo brakes n a Whole lot of Fun! Got back on my 1300 n Felt SOOO MUCH Safer because it is Bigger n the Long wheel base. If I had my choice n even if I rode all the time by myself - I would choose the K1300s Every time over the 1k- because you can go to New York n back to LA n NEVER get tired n after 1 day on the RR ripping around Aggressively - ur pretty tired. A tip for Anyone - wear padded bicycle shorts n you Never get a soar butt - especially on long trips n if you don't have a USB Port - add one, as makes all the difference to be able to play music n charge your phone. The Only 1 thing I don't like about my BMW 1300 n reading the reviews that other people say - is that the back seat for my girlfriend is tilted a little forward n she slides up - so you can order a net off of Ebay for $13 that goes over back part that prevents her from sliding forward n/or take seat n have redone to raise back part.... (#3) My 2nd service at 6k miles on my 1300 - they let me take out the New 2015 - 1600 like n this review n OMG - ABSOLUTELY LOVED - LOVED it n is the next bike I'm gonna get this year for sure - 2017! It is not as heavy as you might think or may look n my girlfriend Really Loved it also. (Everything this gentleman n this review said is True n then some!!!) I also have a Really nice 2001 Fatboy Harley that bought off a guy a few years back with 48k miles - all tricked out - dual cam n chrome everywhere - led blue lights, etc etc n I would pick the BMW - 1200 - 1300 or 1600 Everytime over the Harley n that is just my personal choice as a Fully Loaded New Harley is upwards of $40k n a Fully Loaded 1600 is around $30k n also Sat on a New Harley n didn't feel near as good as the 1600. I ride with 15 - 30 friends practically every weekend that mostly have Harleys n I Love Harleys don't get me wrong - but am looking for Comfort - Performance n Handling best Overall n will pick Beamer EVERYTIME! I hope this helps a little as what I've Experienced n the Best thing you can do before buying any bike - is to do your Research - check out Reviews like this one above n Most of all - go test ride Every bike your Interested n before you buy n if your gal rides, test ride with her on back after you go first! well, obviously you didn´t test it, but you do realize this bike makes 0-60 mph (0-100km/h) in 3,2 seconds? So yes, it has the "push you back in your seat" kind of power, you just didn´t unleash it.

the bmw claimed 171n-m . No idea why US guys who review the bike always states the torque is low or not impressive ...
Perhaps torque to weight is the ratio that I need to specify my disinterest in. It's certainly not lacking in either department.

Enjoyed the video, and its a great looking bike. I found a 2012 model here in Florida for $12,999 but 36,000 miles on it. But currently riding a 2012 Suzuki Boulevard, and the BMW has to be alot better than that lol. My question is the maintenance cost, since it is a BMW, any answers to anything?

I wholeheartedly agree that we should take care of brand new demo bikes. With that in mind, your gear changes freak me out. It's probably habit (we all have them) but do you need to be so aggressive with the changes??

I own one, and you have not clue what your talking about Armoni. It has 160hp and 130 ft tq. I have the Exclusive version. I absolutely love riding mine. Duke, don't get me wrong, nice review, but did you set all the parameters prior to your ride? I do and ride mine around town, no problems. Yes, it is a it heavy at slow speeds, but once you are rolling, it is as nimble as my RR's in the past. Put it in 1st gear and take it to the limit and tell me it has not enough power. All the due-dad's and gizmo's are very important Duke, so don't laugh it off. Decent review, but a little more research should have been done prior.

Hi Toby, I am new to the BMW. I just got my first, 2016 K1600 GTLE with only 2500 on it. Like new !!! Do you feel the bike grinding a bit on low speeds around town? Almost like it cries for more throttle. Also, at times, it clucks when you let the throttle suddenly rest. Or, when you at low speeds on 4,5 or 6th speed. Your feedback will help a lot.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Looking through the windscreen? Yes. Even in the lowest setting it's still too high to see over (for me at least).

The GTL and GTL Exclusive have a different (bigger) windscreen than the GT. Also the rider's position on the GT is different. It's more sportier than the GTL.

In many ways a great bike but it is surprising that there are not many people talking about the miserable gear shift on such an expensive motorcycle. Quite a lot of your gear shifts gives a strong "klonk".
I have a brand new 2018 GTL and I can tell you this: Yes, there is a 'clunk' dropping it into 1st. After that, you use the Shift Assist. All you have to do is fight the urge to rev match. Hold the throttle steady (mild to wild, your choice) and hit the shifter. It is so ^%$ smooth, you'd swear it was a DCT! Downshifting, same thing: Keep the throttle closed and hit the shifter. I cannot come anywhere near as smooth trying to rev match rather than letting the bike just 'do it's thing'.
When I let the Shift Assist work, its a smooth as a slushbox. Seriously. On this point, BMW could not possibly achieve any greater level of perfection.
It really is that good. I absolutely love the bike but it is 768 lbs. with a not too low CG, so it is a bit intimidating as I'm still getting used to it. Coming off a Suzuki V-Strom 1000, I think I'll be OK, as the V-Strom, when fully fueled, felt like a road going Enduro. But heavier. But yeah, there is a learning curve to go through.
It is top heavy...that is the Elephant in the Room...and the reason wht K1600B and Grand America were Necessary
Where i come from due to outrageous purchase tax (around 100%) this model costs 52,000 USD. for 27,000 you can get Suzuki Vstrom 1000

This bikes pull to the left and it is a common issue in this bmw. Bmw ignoring this all the way. My pulling so hard that if I badly touch bars in second I am in left lane. Bmw can you respond to this or at list tell that before we buy the bike so we know about the issue and we do deal or not

There is a difference and rain is useful in the rain .... but lets be realistic , they are just modes and damper settings. Nothing special or unique.

Not Quite Sergio. Nothing comes close to it in terms of performance, comfort, and power. Goldwing is very long of tooth and Harley is just an overall different experience. I own one and have done 1000 mile days on it (14 hrs, and 36min. to be exact), and always find it to be comfortable and a joy to ride. Mine is a 2013 model, and it hasn't given me a spec of trouble in its 40,000 mile history.
