  • The BNSF Chicago Sub, commonly referred to as the Racetrack, is a triple track mainline that runs from Chicago to Aurora. This famous line is very busy and sees about a hundred trains on a typical weekday, the bulk of which being Metra trains. The Metras are often see running side by side, hence the name Racetrack.
    The crossings on this line are all maintained by BNSF, and as such, almost all of them have GS E Bells, with the exception of Harlem Ave. in Berwyn which has a WCH E Bell. All of the bells operate in a unique fashion too, in that they operate from when the signals start, to when the train enters the crossing. I don't recall seeing this on any other line, and as far as I can tell, is exclusive to the Racetrack. Aside from that, the crossings are your typical BNSF style installs, and even a bunch of BN installs still remaining.

    Nice video! The pedestrian gate at 21:42 is so pointless...it’s broken, and it doesn’t even block the sidewalk!

    Also, when a new train approaches while a train is a currently crossing the island, the bells will come on again and go off as the new train enters the island.

    The Pedestrian crossing probably need a upgrade.
    1. The Bell will turn off when the gate fully go down.
    2. The Gates should have barriers like Dutch Train Crossings so people can’t duck under the crossing and end up dying.

      The bells turn off when the train goes over the grades, and barriers like those on Dutch crossings simply don't exist for the us

    Nice footage, but I can't believe that the commuter trains let people off in the middle of a railroad crossing! That seems incredibly dangerous to me. I'm from Denver, and all of our light rail and commuter trains have a designated platform for people to safely get on and off the train. They aren't trying to weave through traffic at a busy railroad crossing, as your video almost caught a car accident at one crossing.

      @railroading Před 2 lety

      Sometimes they do that, and it's not that dangerous actually, because all the cars are already stopped. Sometimes Metra does this either because the platform is too small (rarely), or because they went past the station a little.

    and it’s kind of weird that the ball shut off for a second and turn back on and turn off again when the gates rise up and the ones with no arms

    go the diesel engines in Metra locomotives normally idle at such a high rpm??

    • @Mrcharles.
      @Mrcharles. Před 3 lety +1

      Some of those locomotives are almost fifty years old and are desperate need of replacement. This is perhaps why you’re hearing them at high rpm.

      Its actually the HEP, unless there is a specific one you are referring to.
