I find it totally normal to brush teeth after every meal. Dentists and parents teach us that in Europe too. Truth is, most people don't actually do it. I carry a toothbrush and toothpaste travel size in my bag.
@@Korea_expertactually you are only supposed to gargle your mouth with water/drink water after eating. Wait 30 minutes after eating to brush your teeth. If not, you will brush acid of food into your enamel. All this information taught to me by dentist and hygienist
it depends. it's not good to wash your hair everyday if you already have dry and fizzled hair, and dry skin. it's different when you have oily hair and skin. it also depends on the water, some countries have "harder" water that comes from the shower/bath.
Washing hair everyday is not weird at all. Filipinos wash hair everyday sometimes 2x specially in summer. Also, drinking tap water in UK is common. Even in restaurants you have a choice for tap or bottled water.
Yep, I was born in Vietnam where I was taught to wash yourself every day, including hair, but I grew up in the US where I found that to be unnecessary because it's not as hot and humid. When I came back to visit Vietnam 20 years later I had to wash my hair every day again because the heat made me sweat more and the humidity made grime stick to hair more as well. But now I brought that habit back to the US with me (with occasional breaks once in a while) because it keeps my hair in better condition overall.

Great video! I am from Spain, and I also wash my teeth after lunch at work, and many other people do as well. Not so much in restaurants, but I recognize it is laziness due to less convenient toilets in some places. As for washing my hair every day. No, just every third day. Washing your hair everyday might cause dryer hair, and it is a waste of water when I do not have especially oily hair, and we have severe water problems in Spain. But my brother does, wash his hair every day. So, it depends on each person and kind of hair. Sniffing your nose all the time in front of others is considered very rude and annoying in Spain. Plus is not as effective. You can choose to go to the toilet to blow your nose, but if you sniff your snots, they will be back in less than a minute, so it is a little bit useless. About floor toilets, in Europe I have only seen floor toilets in motorway areas in France. Once I was at a restaurant in Korea that only had floor ones, and I preferred to wait. i simply can't use them, but I know that for "number two", that position is better. And about drinking tap water. Always. Madrid has an excellent quality of water, so I prefer to pay for my wine 😁

Maybe in all Asian countries this is done because of the humid weather...brushing after waking up,eating and before going to bed is the norm. In the Phil, you also have your face cleaner because of the pollution, make up,lotion and perfume.. you take a shower twice a day and wash your hair every other day or everyday depending on the type of hair... The only difference is the blowing of noses...we are not embarrassed by it but girls usually ask to be excused and turn around or go to the restroom. I noticed that in the States they do not brush their teeth in public restroom.

About washing your hair everyday I think it's because of a mix of resasons: very oily, scarce&thin type of hair, in comparison to western people, and to that polution was added. About brushing their teeth in public there're other countries where people do it as well but no so commonly
I used to brush my teeth after lunch and wash my hair every day when I was in my 20s. I don’t know why I changed my habits. I think I realized I could do less and no one noticed.
American Sushi Girl here: It makes sense to brush your teeth after every meal because the food particles left in your mouth grow germs and bacteria. Also if you are a coffee drinker like me, your teeth look stained and need to be whitened with toothpaste often. One must also be mindful of having an offensive breath. I also have oily hair which requires me to wash it every other day (I'm 73) and still have oily skin and hair. Our hair attracts dirt from the air and gets sticky, greasy, flat no fluff if left unwashed 2-3 days. I also never blow my nose in public, only in the bathroom. Many of these "strange" habits are just common sense good hygiene habits everyone should be doing.

I like Screening Humanity and some of the reality shows like Hello Councelor… I have some issues with Parasite. Twists and turns and shock all the time so thrilling to watch, but had some issues with plot. It was weird that the writer and director wanted our sympathy with the wrong person. No resolution on whether the boy got the hospital. The hero the underage daughter rescuing on her back the inappropriate tutor whose parent was killing her father, the tutor only injured attempting to kill the couple in the basement. The guy trying to kill everyone in the yard was really the one defending himself, they were held hostage and they murdered his wife. Move to the country if you want to see sky. Why are we supposed to cheer on the con family? The little boy was traumatized because of the man hiding in the basement, then the Morse code. This is okay cause his parents eat instant noodles with overpriced beef? They paid upfront, didn’t give hassle to the wrongly let go staff. They tried to help their little boy. Seemed to be a happy couple. Isn’t lying about academic credentials worse than murder in Korea? I found the staff to be the parasite not the other way round. Wouldn’t a former or current neighbor tell the police about the bunkers if so common? Now another household with children traumatized with someone still in the basement.

1. In the U.S., we're taught (as children) to brush after every meal but, somehow, a lot of us lose that habit; 2. Washing hair every day? Sry, but I can't, bc my hair is EXTREMELY long and thick, and it takes abt 24 hrs to dry; 3. I sniff. I can't help it, but I think blowing my nose IN PUBLIC is rude; 4. Bottled water, only, even when cooking (unless I can thoroughly boil the water); and 5. So glad there are flushable toilets. I always wonder how "squatters" manage to keep their clothes clean, and I'd like to LEARN the technique, bc I might one day end up in a place that only has squat toilets. Best to be prepared, right? It’s nice to learn more about Korean habits and uses. I watch several Korean channels on you tube and it is nice to have that information in your head while watching those films. About brushing your teeth, Korean people also use garlic in their recipes and that will give a bad breath for sure. It can change per person. Some people have a really really bad breath after garlic and others almost not. I brush my teeth minimum 2 times a day. When I am going outside for shopping or other reasons, I also brush my teeth first. I wash my hair every day!! I think that I started to do that when I was a young girl and I did not change that habit because I don’t want greasy or smelly hair. About the blocked nose… That is something that we learn our babies/toddlers to blow their nose. In my country it is impolite to snif and surely when you are accompanied. I have a nose allergy so I use a lot of handkerchiefs every day. When I was in primary school, the allergy was more present and I did sleep with a box next to my bed for the used handkerchiefs. That was a crazy time!

Nothing special. Most people do these things for hygienic purposes. In the Philippines we not only shampoo our hair everyday but take a bath 2 or 3 times a day whether in cold or hot weather

Tap water in Australia is fine to drink, when bottled water became a thing here 1990s people laughed and called it just a trend, but it caught on because people liked it lol. A lot of people here just get a jug with a charcoal filter to put their minds at ease and it's just like bottled water!
Interesting list…my shock was to see Koreans never / rarely wash their hands after housing the restroom…especially gross when I saw the cook at a restaurant walk out of the stall and back into the kitchen. Also, at the gym, seeing guys urinating in the shower or using the hair dryer to dry off their private parts. 😂 Even after 25 years in Korea, still not used to this.

Taking a bath every day (IN MORNING) before going to work or just stay at home is definitely a good habit and part of your daily hygiene , much more if you also take a bath before going to bed at night is the best. Just washing your hair I do believe your not totally clean at all compared to taking a bath daily.

It's not unusual for filipinos because... 1. Filipinos brush their teeth every after meal for hygienic purpose and they do it even in public 2. They do wash their hair everyday and take a bath 2-3 times daily 3. Filipinos drink purified water, alkaline water, mineral water or distilled water (to ensure health and safety) 4. Around 95% filipinos use flush toilets 5% still use squat toilets but most of it can only be seen on rural areas 5. It's kinda rude and a bit disgusting to blow your nose in public in the Philippines but some do it, while others don't
My wifes family (originally from Busan) have a very modern apartment with fully tiled bathrooms, but still prefer to go to a sauna to bath.. must be a habit from when most didnot have good indoor plumbing. Im also now used to only drinking bottled water from jeju.. comming from UK its strange not the drink tap water.

The belief that it's not good to wash your hair everyday is a myth, or rather, it depends on the person. Japanese people also wash their hair every day. When I asked my Japanese hair dresser, he said that Japanese hair is different, so they should wash their hair every day. Personally, if I miss a day, my scalp gets all oily and itchy and when I wash my hair, I get 4x the amount of hair shedding so even if I'm really tired, I always make sure I wash my hair before going to sleep. Also, I just find it dirty to go to sleep without washing my hair, but then again, I'm also the type that must change out of my outside clothes immediately after returning home and I never sit on my bed in outside clothes or get in bed without taking a shower and changing into my pjs so I am kind of a germaphobe. Do you have brita filters or the equivalent in Korea? I have a weak stomach so even if the tap water is safe to drink, I always filter my water or else I get tummy issues...

Oh yes, I saw it quite often that Koreans brush their teeth wherever they are but I wonder that I don‘t see them with electric toothbrushes…and no I don‘t wash my hair every day nowadays it is really unhealthy for the sculp and the hair, here in Germany the tap water is from high quality but many prefer water bottles, that with the sneezing is combined here with the age the younger should sniff the older blow but not too aggressive it has medical reasons and last I would prefer to have your toilets here, the combination with a bidet and no need of toiletpaper sounds sooo good to me…

I heard Koreans wash their hair everyday but what I was always curious about is... do they blow dry their hair everyday too? I have a lot of hair so I cannot fathom blow drying my hair everyday, it takes me at least an hour and it's a total arm workout, but also air drying my hair would take 12+ hours in dry weather to fully dry. So I also wonder how they do it

Okay, she just said that teeth brushing is done in the restroom. It's not like they're sitting at the restaurant table doing it. I've been told by Asian friends that they have oily skin. That's why the daily hair washing. I'm of European descent, with very very dry skin and hair. I wash my hair every other day, and I still use two kinds of conditioner. Blowing your nose in public is disgusting in any culture. Go in the restroom. Same as brushing your teeth! Don't do it at the table. Tap water in any culture is disgusting because of the chemical taste. But bottled water is expensive and plastic bottles are problematic. Filters, people. I have two of them on my house, one for the incoming water line and one for the refrigerator water line. Okay, the squatty potties take some getting used to. But as long as you've got a bum gun, everything's good. Also, carry paper towel in your purse to dry with. Standing up and going wet without a panty liner is just weird for any American, and trying to dry yourself with toilet paper leaves you with soggy bits in your nethers. Trust me on this one.

A lot of this makes sense. The only thing I do is drink water from our Reverse Osmosis system. That system cleans all the particles and chemicals so it actually is better than bottled water. If not at home, I rather drink bottled water or boil water first. Thank you! I remember squat toilets in Japan, but they do also have regular sitting ones there too now. Similar culture but in Canada, I may blow my nose if sniffing doesn’t work. 😊

I have Korean friends in Australia and I have noticed that they leave the table to go out to blow their noses. I Australia it is very rude to sniff (also can cause serious infections) so you are encouraged to blow your nose. It is also rude to slurp your food. I think that many people brush their teeth after every meals and wash their hair everyday. So we have similarities. Because of my Korean friends I try to pay attention to their customs such as giving or receiving a plate or glass with 2 hands rather than one, etc., there’s so much you can learn from other cultures.

I'm Mexican and i know that every person or family habits are different, but we have some similarities with koreans. We do brush our teeth after a meal and Is common to carry the toothpaste AND brush with us. We wash our hair everyday too (maybe 'cause my region has usually a very hot weather). We dont usually drink tap water neither, but that depends of every person choice. And finally we dont have squat toilets BUT in some small rural areas (out of cities) Is common no use "letrinas", ITS a kind of squat bathroom that is made of a hole on the ground, without pipes, just a small excavation on dirt, when Is full, you put on more dirt on top AND Made another letrina. 😂

Filipinos also have this hygienic habit of brushing our teeth every meal. So, we brush our teeth three times a day in school, in the office. We bring our toothbrush with us. we also wash our hair every day.

Another thing, this is like forgotten in history but the country is trying to relive this part of history. the Battle of Yultong where the filipino soldiers helped South Korea battle against the Chinese and North Korean troops.
I don't brush my hair everyday but my body more often. Tap water is absolutely fine in Sweden, drinking it everyday and it's cheaper too. The white noise is almost gone now. 👍

What about in school? In American schools, we have tissue boxes in the classroom for anyone to use and throw away in the room. It's generally better to go blow your nose to not be distractive (sound of constant sniffling) to other people learning and teaching in class but also not have to miss learning material by leaving to go to the bathroom.
I have spent a fair bit of time in Vietnam as my wife is Vietnamese. Lots of squat toilets there. Alway try to avoid them if possible. But unfortunately in country area it is not possible to avoid them. Also have to use the bum gun there haha. Thank again for the information.

Well, my family brushes teeth during the day as well - not on the bus, but of course in an available restroom. Most people I know wash their hair every day....pass on the nose, but we have safe and very clean tap water, so we drink it. There are countries where you better not. Commiseration on your old toilets....

Sounds reasonable to me. I lived in Taiwan for years and the environment tends to establish the customs you follow. The Taipei air was so dirty that head hair (which is a very good filter BTW) was gross at the end of the day (including the hair follicles in the nose). My brother in laws (see later) all had respiratory problems. Concerning the water - same. I was alerted to the poor/dangerous water quality by a manager and had to go out to buy an evaporator. Now that we are living in the US, my wife (a Taiwanese) won't drink the tap water here, so I had to have an Osmosis water filter installed. It's all good.

Korea is such a clean and hygienic country, but one thing I find disgusting is when they spit on the ground! Why is this allowed in Korea? In Singapore you will be fined if you spit in public, maybe Korea should implement this system to stop Koreans spitting on the ground. Also, why are there no public trash bins?

When I am eating spicy hot kimchee and curries my nose runs! I also have terrible sinus issues. I have had to blow my nose in Korean restaurant in USA and the Koreans looked at me with horror. I just couldn’t help it. I also drink tap water. LOL My whole life. Do not waste my hair daily. That would not be good for my bi racial hair. And last but not least, NO squat toilets for me. I have terrible arthritis and could not get up.

ive been brushing my teeth at work mainly because I have a cavity and I'm trying to keep it clean and one of my coworkers said "ew that's unsanitary" so just a thought but .. I'm practicing good hygiene, but doing so in public is "unhygienic? 😂 also im curious if Korean shampoos are less "stripping" then ones in the US .... my hair can only be washed once a week if I do it daily I will be stripping the oils from my scalp to much which will make my scalp Produce more oil leading to a greasy scalp. all throughout highSchool I had this without realizing why until I watched a video explaining what was happening. loved watching this video 🥰
I get my hair wet daily before brushing but I only use shampoo and conditioner a few times a week. I think Korean’s wash for vanity reasons. The country used to be agrarian and poor and your hair looking nice and not being dirty anywhere on your person a sign a wealth. It’s fine. I don’t think daily washing is excessive.

Koreans must have really thick hair to be able to wash it every day. With shampoo? Mine would break apart. 😅😢😂 On tv dramas it also seems the blow dry it frequently… i run away from blow driers. 😂
I have a doubt. I've heard that Koreans don't use deodorants because they don't smell. Is this true? Also, I think that if older Koreans prefer squat toilets they must have really good leg and back muscles , I wouldn't be able to hold that position . Squat toilets are not comfortable as you said and I find it challenging to use:) I think the older people in the past didn't have other options and maybe they just got used to it~Fortunately (?), not many of the elderly use squat amy more :)!

I read an article somewhere (I wish I'd save it) it read that only 0.006% of Koreans have body odor because you are "genetically mutated" in the sense that almost all of you don't have the ABCC11 gene, which is the only gene that causes body odor. Ethnically speaking some of these things can't be applied. Just learn about other cultures and take things with a grain of salt. Not everything is for everyone. Personally many of these things are a hard NO for me. However, I understand for others this makes sense and thats just fine.
I'm not Korean but I found out that I do many things the way Koreans do somethings, even before being interested in Korean culture 👀 Edit: I have examples, if you want me to exemplify I will write them down. Curious fact: many had said to me I like your "Chinese" like eyes, I did research are more like Korean eyes I even have the lower eyelid fold (let's say that how It's called), I decided to learn Japanese, Chinese and Korean, just the basics to determine which is easier for me... Korean was the easiest for me even if for many Japanese is the easiest 😬 (bear in mind that I was born and raised in a Latin country so my mother tongue is Spanish). Probably, I'm just wondering and guessing, that I was Korean in a previous life or I have to some degree Korean heritage, I don't know because I'm adoptee. So everything is possible.

What I find weird is that brushing your teeth after every meal, washing your hair every day, or not drinking tap water is considered weird by anyone. I've done that for decades. I would never, ever drink or cook with tap water. The standards for quality do not meet my standards or should for anyone.
I find it totally normal to brush teeth after every meal. Dentists and parents teach us that in Europe too. Truth is, most people don't actually do it.
I carry a toothbrush and toothpaste travel size in my bag.

@@Korea_expertactually you are only supposed to gargle your mouth with water/drink water after eating. Wait 30 minutes after eating to brush your teeth. If not, you will brush acid of food into your enamel. All this information taught to me by dentist and hygienist
it depends. it's not good to wash your hair everyday if you already have dry and fizzled hair, and dry skin. it's different when you have oily hair and skin. it also depends on the water, some countries have "harder" water that comes from the shower/bath.
Washing hair everyday is not weird at all. Filipinos wash hair everyday sometimes 2x specially in summer.
Also, drinking tap water in UK is common. Even in restaurants you have a choice for tap or bottled water.

Yep, I was born in Vietnam where I was taught to wash yourself every day, including hair, but I grew up in the US where I found that to be unnecessary because it's not as hot and humid. When I came back to visit Vietnam 20 years later I had to wash my hair every day again because the heat made me sweat more and the humidity made grime stick to hair more as well. But now I brought that habit back to the US with me (with occasional breaks once in a while) because it keeps my hair in better condition overall.

I am from Spain, and I also wash my teeth after lunch at work, and many other people do as well. Not so much in restaurants, but I recognize it is laziness due to less convenient toilets in some places.
As for washing my hair every day. No, just every third day. Washing your hair everyday might cause dryer hair, and it is a waste of water when I do not have especially oily hair, and we have severe water problems in Spain. But my brother does, wash his hair every day. So, it depends on each person and kind of hair.
Sniffing your nose all the time in front of others is considered very rude and annoying in Spain. Plus is not as effective. You can choose to go to the toilet to blow your nose, but if you sniff your snots, they will be back in less than a minute, so it is a little bit useless.
About floor toilets, in Europe I have only seen floor toilets in motorway areas in France. Once I was at a restaurant in Korea that only had floor ones, and I preferred to wait. i simply can't use them, but I know that for "number two", that position is better.
And about drinking tap water. Always. Madrid has an excellent quality of water, so I prefer to pay for my wine 😁

Maybe in all Asian countries this is done because of the humid weather...brushing after waking up,eating and before going to bed is the norm. In the Phil, you also have your face cleaner because of the pollution, make up,lotion and perfume.. you take a shower twice a day and wash your hair every other day or everyday depending on the type of hair... The only difference is the blowing of noses...we are not embarrassed by it but girls usually ask to be excused and turn around or go to the restroom. I noticed that in the States they do not brush their teeth in public restroom.

American Sushi Girl here: It makes sense to brush your teeth after every meal because the food particles left in your mouth grow germs and bacteria. Also if you are a coffee drinker like me, your teeth look stained and need to be whitened with toothpaste often. One must also be mindful of having an offensive breath. I also have oily hair which requires me to wash it every other day (I'm 73) and still have oily skin and hair. Our hair attracts dirt from the air and gets sticky, greasy, flat no fluff if left unwashed 2-3 days. I also never blow my nose in public, only in the bathroom. Many of these "strange" habits are just common sense good hygiene habits everyone should be doing.

I like Screening Humanity and some of the reality shows like Hello Councelor… I have some issues with Parasite. Twists and turns and shock all the time so thrilling to watch, but had some issues with plot. It was weird that the writer and director wanted our sympathy with the wrong person. No resolution on whether the boy got the hospital. The hero the underage daughter rescuing on her back the inappropriate tutor whose parent was killing her father, the tutor only injured attempting to kill the couple in the basement. The guy trying to kill everyone in the yard was really the one defending himself, they were held hostage and they murdered his wife. Move to the country if you want to see sky. Why are we supposed to cheer on the con family? The little boy was traumatized because of the man hiding in the basement, then the Morse code. This is okay cause his parents eat instant noodles with overpriced beef? They paid upfront, didn’t give hassle to the wrongly let go staff. They tried to help their little boy. Seemed to be a happy couple. Isn’t lying about academic credentials worse than murder in Korea? I found the staff to be the parasite not the other way round. Wouldn’t a former or current neighbor tell the police about the bunkers if so common? Now another household with children traumatized with someone still in the basement.

1. In the U.S., we're taught (as children) to brush after every meal but, somehow, a lot of us lose that habit;
2. Washing hair every day? Sry, but I can't, bc my hair is EXTREMELY long and thick, and it takes abt 24 hrs to dry;
3. I sniff. I can't help it, but I think blowing my nose IN PUBLIC is rude;
4. Bottled water, only, even when cooking (unless I can thoroughly boil the water); and
5. So glad there are flushable toilets. I always wonder how "squatters" manage to keep their clothes clean, and I'd like to LEARN the technique, bc I might one day end up in a place that only has squat toilets. Best to be prepared, right?

It’s nice to learn more about Korean habits and uses. I watch several Korean channels on you tube and it is nice to have that information in your head while watching those films. About brushing your teeth, Korean people also use garlic in their recipes and that will give a bad breath for sure. It can change per person. Some people have a really really bad breath after garlic and others almost not. I brush my teeth minimum 2 times a day. When I am going outside for shopping or other reasons, I also brush my teeth first. I wash my hair every day!! I think that I started to do that when I was a young girl and I did not change that habit because I don’t want greasy or smelly hair. About the blocked nose… That is something that we learn our babies/toddlers to blow their nose. In my country it is impolite to snif and surely when you are accompanied. I have a nose allergy so I use a lot of handkerchiefs every day. When I was in primary school, the allergy was more present and I did sleep with a box next to my bed for the used handkerchiefs. That was a crazy time!

Nothing special. Most people do these things for hygienic purposes. In the Philippines we not only shampoo our hair everyday but take a bath 2 or 3 times a day whether in cold or hot weather

Interesting list…my shock was to see Koreans never / rarely wash their hands after housing the restroom…especially gross when I saw the cook at a restaurant walk out of the stall and back into the kitchen. Also, at the gym, seeing guys urinating in the shower or using the hair dryer to dry off their private parts. 😂 Even after 25 years in Korea, still not used to this.

It's not unusual for filipinos because...
1. Filipinos brush their teeth every after meal for hygienic purpose and they do it even in public
2. They do wash their hair everyday and take a bath 2-3 times daily
3. Filipinos drink purified water, alkaline water, mineral water or distilled water (to ensure health and safety)
4. Around 95% filipinos use flush toilets 5% still use squat toilets but most of it can only be seen on rural areas
5. It's kinda rude and a bit disgusting to blow your nose in public in the Philippines but some do it, while others don't

My wifes family (originally from Busan) have a very modern apartment with fully tiled bathrooms, but still prefer to go to a sauna to bath.. must be a habit from when most didnot have good indoor plumbing. Im also now used to only drinking bottled water from jeju.. comming from UK its strange not the drink tap water.

The belief that it's not good to wash your hair everyday is a myth, or rather, it depends on the person. Japanese people also wash their hair every day. When I asked my Japanese hair dresser, he said that Japanese hair is different, so they should wash their hair every day. Personally, if I miss a day, my scalp gets all oily and itchy and when I wash my hair, I get 4x the amount of hair shedding so even if I'm really tired, I always make sure I wash my hair before going to sleep. Also, I just find it dirty to go to sleep without washing my hair, but then again, I'm also the type that must change out of my outside clothes immediately after returning home and I never sit on my bed in outside clothes or get in bed without taking a shower and changing into my pjs so I am kind of a germaphobe.
Do you have brita filters or the equivalent in Korea? I have a weak stomach so even if the tap water is safe to drink, I always filter my water or else I get tummy issues...

I’m not Korean I’m Filipino but I do brush my teeth every after meal in office and in school before and I wash my hair daily. Can’t get out of the house without washing hair or taking a shower. What’s weird for me is those who doesn’t wash their hair often😁

Filipinos wash our hair everyday, I’m in USA now I still wash my hair everyday.
Oh yes, I saw it quite often that Koreans brush their teeth wherever they are but I wonder that I don‘t see them with electric toothbrushes…and no I don‘t wash my hair every day nowadays it is really unhealthy for the sculp and the hair, here in Germany the tap water is from high quality but many prefer water bottles, that with the sneezing is combined here with the age the younger should sniff the older blow but not too aggressive it has medical reasons and last I would prefer to have your toilets here, the combination with a bidet and no need of toiletpaper sounds sooo good to me…

I heard Koreans wash their hair everyday but what I was always curious about is... do they blow dry their hair everyday too? I have a lot of hair so I cannot fathom blow drying my hair everyday, it takes me at least an hour and it's a total arm workout, but also air drying my hair would take 12+ hours in dry weather to fully dry. So I also wonder how they do it

Okay, she just said that teeth brushing is done in the restroom. It's not like they're sitting at the restaurant table doing it.
I've been told by Asian friends that they have oily skin. That's why the daily hair washing. I'm of European descent, with very very dry skin and hair. I wash my hair every other day, and I still use two kinds of conditioner.
Blowing your nose in public is disgusting in any culture. Go in the restroom. Same as brushing your teeth! Don't do it at the table.
Tap water in any culture is disgusting because of the chemical taste. But bottled water is expensive and plastic bottles are problematic. Filters, people. I have two of them on my house, one for the incoming water line and one for the refrigerator water line.
Okay, the squatty potties take some getting used to. But as long as you've got a bum gun, everything's good. Also, carry paper towel in your purse to dry with. Standing up and going wet without a panty liner is just weird for any American, and trying to dry yourself with toilet paper leaves you with soggy bits in your nethers. Trust me on this one.

My tap water is way better than bottled water but I live in an area with more fresh water sources than most places in the world.
Asians don't necessarily have oily hair, but washing it is necessary to remove daily dirt.

A lot of this makes sense. The only thing I do is drink water from our Reverse Osmosis system. That system cleans all the particles and chemicals so it actually is better than bottled water. If not at home, I rather drink bottled water or boil water first. Thank you! I remember squat toilets in Japan, but they do also have regular sitting ones there too now. Similar culture but in Canada, I may blow my nose if sniffing doesn’t work. 😊

This was the first video of yours I've ever seen and I enjoyed it. I understood a lot of where you were coming from with washing the hair and things like that. When I'm around any of my friends that smoke when I come home I take off all of my clothes, put them in the laundry and wash take a shower because I smell like smoke and I don't want to. Lol. I have Korean friends in Australia and I have noticed that they leave the table to go out to blow their noses. I Australia it is very rude to sniff (also can cause serious infections) so you are encouraged to blow your nose. It is also rude to slurp your food.
I think that many people brush their teeth after every meals and wash their hair everyday. So we have similarities.
Because of my Korean friends I try to pay attention to their customs such as giving or receiving a plate or glass with 2 hands rather than one, etc., there’s so much you can learn from other cultures.
Thank you this was so interesting. I want to go to Korea someday and would like to not stick out! I had to use squat toilets on trains in Kenya, quite an adventure.

I was also taught to brush teeth 3 times a day after meals, but I only brush them in the morning now.
I'm Mexican and i know that every person or family habits are different, but we have some similarities with koreans. We do brush our teeth after a meal and Is common to carry the toothpaste AND brush with us. We wash our hair everyday too (maybe 'cause my region has usually a very hot weather). We dont usually drink tap water neither, but that depends of every person choice. And finally we dont have squat toilets BUT in some small rural areas (out of cities) Is common no use "letrinas", ITS a kind of squat bathroom that is made of a hole on the ground, without pipes, just a small excavation on dirt, when Is full, you put on more dirt on top AND Made another letrina. 😂

i was born and raised in the U.S. and do a lot of these as well. i wash my hair every day, mostly drink bottled water, and i try to avoid blowing my nose in public if i can, although sometimes i can’t because my congestion can get severe 😅 i’ve always said that washing your hair every day is not bad. if your hair is oily, wash it. what else am i supposed to do if it’s greasy? it looks and feels gross if i don’t wash it every day. i don’t care if it’s bad for my scalp, i’d rather have a damaged scalp than look like bacon frying in a pan 😂

I don't brush my hair everyday but my body more often. Tap water is absolutely fine in Sweden, drinking it everyday and it's cheaper too. The white noise is almost gone now. 👍

What about in school? In American schools, we have tissue boxes in the classroom for anyone to use and throw away in the room. It's generally better to go blow your nose to not be distractive (sound of constant sniffling) to other people learning and teaching in class but also not have to miss learning material by leaving to go to the bathroom.

I have spent a fair bit of time in Vietnam as my wife is Vietnamese. Lots of squat toilets there. Alway try to avoid them if possible. But unfortunately in country area it is not possible to avoid them. Also have to use the bum gun there haha. Thank again for the information.

As for the sauna etiquette, if you go to jjimjilbang, you can eat there and you are expected to clean up your trash and you are supposed not to talk too loudly as there will be people who want to take a rest there. And if you go to bath house, people take a shower before they go into the big bath:)!

Well, my family brushes teeth during the day as well - not on the bus, but of course in an available restroom. Most people I know wash their hair every day....pass on the nose, but we have safe and very clean tap water, so we drink it. There are countries where you better not. Commiseration on your old toilets....

Sounds reasonable to me. I lived in Taiwan for years and the environment tends to establish the customs you follow. The Taipei air was so dirty that head hair (which is a very good filter BTW) was gross at the end of the day (including the hair follicles in the nose). My brother in laws (see later) all had respiratory problems. Concerning the water - same. I was alerted to the poor/dangerous water quality by a manager and had to go out to buy an evaporator. Now that we are living in the US, my wife (a Taiwanese) won't drink the tap water here, so I had to have an Osmosis water filter installed. It's all good.

Korea is such a clean and hygienic country, but one thing I find disgusting is when they spit on the ground! Why is this allowed in Korea? In Singapore you will be fined if you spit in public, maybe Korea should implement this system to stop Koreans spitting on the ground. Also, why are there no public trash bins?

When I am eating spicy hot kimchee and curries my nose runs! I also have terrible sinus issues. I have had to blow my nose in Korean restaurant in USA and the Koreans looked at me with horror. I just couldn’t help it. I also drink tap water. LOL My whole life. Do not waste my hair daily. That would not be good for my bi racial hair. And last but not least, NO squat toilets for me. I have terrible arthritis and could not get up.

ive been brushing my teeth at work mainly because I have a cavity and I'm trying to keep it clean and one of my coworkers said "ew that's unsanitary" so just a thought but .. I'm practicing good hygiene, but doing so in public is "unhygienic? 😂
also im curious if Korean shampoos are less "stripping" then ones in the US .... my hair can only be washed once a week if I do it daily I will be stripping the oils from my scalp to much which will make my scalp Produce more oil leading to a greasy scalp. all throughout highSchool I had this without realizing why until I watched a video explaining what was happening.

I get my hair wet daily before brushing but I only use shampoo and conditioner a few times a week. I think Korean’s wash for vanity reasons. The country used to be agrarian and poor and your hair looking nice and not being dirty anywhere on your person a sign a wealth. It’s fine. I don’t think daily washing is excessive.

Squat toilets are not comfortable as you said and I find it challenging to use:) I think the older people in the past didn't have other options and maybe they just got used to it~Fortunately (?), not many of the elderly use squat amy more :)!

I read an article somewhere (I wish I'd save it) it read that only 0.006% of Koreans have body odor because you are "genetically mutated" in the sense that almost all of you don't have the ABCC11 gene, which is the only gene that causes body odor. Ethnically speaking some of these things can't be applied. Just learn about other cultures and take things with a grain of salt. Not everything is for everyone. Personally many of these things are a hard NO for me. However, I understand for others this makes sense and thats just fine.

I'm not Korean but I found out that I do many things the way Koreans do somethings, even before being interested in Korean culture 👀
Edit: I have examples, if you want me to exemplify I will write them down. Curious fact: many had said to me I like your "Chinese" like eyes, I did research are more like Korean eyes I even have the lower eyelid fold (let's say that how It's called), I decided to learn Japanese, Chinese and Korean, just the basics to determine which is easier for me... Korean was the easiest for me even if for many Japanese is the easiest 😬 (bear in mind that I was born and raised in a Latin country so my mother tongue is Spanish). Probably, I'm just wondering and guessing, that I was Korean in a previous life or I have to some degree Korean heritage, I don't know because I'm adoptee. So everything is possible.

What I find weird is that brushing your teeth after every meal, washing your hair every day, or not drinking tap water is considered weird by anyone. I've done that for decades. I would never, ever drink or cook with tap water. The standards for quality do not meet my standards or should for anyone.
