When I bought mine I spent twice as much, but got a 1000 gallon tank. Now I can refill in July when prices are at their lowest, in fact I can go 2+ years between fillups if the price is not right. So far over the 6 years I've owned my tank I have saved over $2000 compared to owning a smaller tank that requires refills during peak season, and over $4000 compared to heating with electricity. My last fill up was 2 months ago and I paid $1.15/gallon (East TN).

@@bigdicksplace if you want to do a proper estimation, convert everything into BTUs per hour and then estimate how many hours in average you guesstimate using each thing. Consider that all tanks have a 70% real use capacity, as you need to allow 20% empty space for gas expansion and you shouldn't discharge under 10% or you will be charged for a new pressure test. BTW, in my case all propane companies have waived the fees for the mandatory pressure test because I own my own tank, so just ask, and most likely they'll waive those fees for you too. Also if you don't own your tank I suggest you ask the propane company to remove it immediately or forsake it (half the times the company will just abandon the tank and you'll get it for free, already installed and working, just get that in writing) , the price differences when you own your own tank vs renting can pay for the new tank in 2 to 3 years.

Helpful video. We moved into a home that has a rental propane tank with Amerigas for years. I filled it once when we moved in 8mths ago. I was so used to natural gas. I totally forgot that once my tank it’s on 30% I’m suppose to call to get it filled. Well, I’m currently on 0% and amerigas said it can take up to 7-10 business days. If I want to expedite my service call it’s $300 extra plus $70 to get the “pressure checked” plus the fill. I’m so ready to buy a bigger tank!!

The only big mistake here, is that your pressure regulator is installed right next to your HVAC/heatpump unit (shown at 2:50). Most municipal codes (including UPC) call for the regulator(s) to be a minimum of 10 ft. from potential ignition sources, in the event of a regulator failure (gas venting from the regulator vent). The vent can also be extended (i.e., piped away) from the regulator, a minimum of 10' (and not near windows or vents) to meet the requirements. Gray PVC electrical conduit is often used for this purpose, as it is UV resistant.

@@JKennedy442 thanks! ....well if my math is correct that means you spend approximately $150 a month on gas if averaged out. I live in South Carolina, My house is 2000 square feet,500 square feet smaller than yours and I have electric everything ,heat, stove, water heater, water pump,etc.... I spend on average $185 to $200 a month. So unless your electric bill is less than $50 dollars i don't believe converting to propane makes any financial sense for me. It's disappointing because I know gas heating feels so much better and cooking on a gas stove is so much better than electric! I am considering getting a smaller tank to run only a gas stove/oven. Sounds like your electric is cheap there though so you're right it probably wouldn't make financial sense. Up here electric is about 12 cents a kwh, and propane/oil/electric heat all cost about the same, the advantage of propane is it's versatility, not the cost.

@@JKennedy442 yeah, I did figure in the fact that you living in a colder environment you would use more gas. There is just no way I can justify the cost sadly. If we ever sell our home and buy a new one I'm definitely looking for a gas home though.
