  • In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to create an auto-resizable text box, meaning the box auto-resizes itself depending on the text it’s enclosing. The one issue that always comes up is how to animate the text box independently of the text it’s enclosing. Well, I’ve cracked the code and have never seen this done anywhere else.

    You can even round the corners with a matte choker and a level adjustment. Just play with the matte choker geometric softness and use the levels in alpha mode and bring the channels closer to get rid of the soft edges. Be sure to put the fill effect at the end of the effect loop !

    It's so much more understandable than with expressions. I tested several tutorials and each time I had inexplicable errors. Here, the result is absolutely identical to the tutorial. I didn't waste my time.

    I have indeed never seen this done before without plugins or expressions! You have blown my mind and potentially changed my approach to lower third animation.
    EDIT: I did however notice that with this method setting up essential properties or MOGRTs is not that easy. It's a great method if you don't want to set up a template where you need to make a lot of paragraph alignment, font family or size changes on the fly or animate an out animation that differs from the in animation. I also noticed some decenders anomaly when adding decorative shapes that calculate their position using expressions, based on source text size and RepeTile expansions.

      That's the unfortunate trend I'm seeing. I do my research and look at competitors. There is one huge channel right now in particular that drives me a little insane. They cram 20 minute tutorials into 5 minutes, you can't follow along, and most of their processes are either outdated, inefficient, or they go the long way around. Yet they make a living at this with almost 1 million subs, while I take my time, care about my subscribers, and always try to deliver quality content, and I just broke 31,000 subs... if I could make a living at this, I would put up three of these a week! Thanks for watching. It is immensely appreciated.

    is it possible to have multiple lines of text and the box will stop after the last letter so you get 'lines' of boxes instead of one big box if you understand what I mean.
    I dont't want to have multiple text layers.

After pick whipping my source text, and all the effects followed to the tee, when I add my text animator to position like you did, my text does not follow the box like it should. I can't really figure out where I'm stuck at... Could you help please?

    • @7MinuteAETutorials
      @7MinuteAETutorials  Před 10 měsíci

      Hide the effect on the BOX layer for "FILL" and make sure your text on the box is following your TEXT layer (if that makes sense). The text on both layers should be the same. It sounds like the text is getting off for some reason. Both layers should have the same paragraph justification as well. Let me know if that fixes the issues. If not, save your project file and send it to me at 7minae@gmail.com and I'll take a look at it for you.

      @@7MinuteAETutorialsThanks Jeff for the reply. Apology for not saying it clearly. It works when I change the text into Uppercase by retyping them manually, but the text box does not resize automatically when i press 'All Caps' (on the Character Panel). I want to use it as a .mogrt so my team have the option to change the text to 'All Caps' when needed,. Thanks.

    • @7MinuteAETutorials
      @7MinuteAETutorials  Před 10 měsíci

      @@tchristen I see. That's because the character panel is only affecting the text layer. The box layer will follow the text layer unless you use faux styles on the text layer - bold, italics, all caps, or small caps. If you use the caps lock, it should work. Let me know if that helps.

    how to save this as a presets in after effect

    • @7MinuteAETutorials
      @7MinuteAETutorials  Před 11 měsíci +1

      It requires 2 layers. Anything with more than 1 layer can't be saved as a preset. You COULD save the text box as a preset with the idea that you will have to add a text layer whenever you use it and connect the source of the text bar to the source of the text layer, and also line up the positioning. So, it could be done

    Great idea. Shame the padding is only consistent with capital letters.

    • @7MinuteAETutorials
      @7MinuteAETutorials  Před 10 měsíci

      The padding should be consistent regardless of whether you're using capital letters or not. If you do use capital letters, don't use the faux styles in the character panel (bold, italics, all caps, small caps) because those will only affect the text layer itself. But you can use capital letters, sentence case, or all lower case letters and it should work. If you're still having issues, let me know and I'll help you figure out the issue. I've used this technique numerous times and have never had an issue with using lower case letters.

    Another tutorial of this type and again what is important to me is left out. What about the export? To what file should this ultimately go? How do I make lower-thirds of it which I will send to myself and be able to use on another computer? Why is there no way to make a mogrt from this? At the point where this video ends, without an export file it is useless in the future anyway.

    • @7MinuteAETutorials
      @7MinuteAETutorials  Před 4 měsíci

      It's only useless if you never use it again :) The crux of this tutorial is how to create an auto-resizable text box NOT how to prep and export an After Effects file as a mgrt for use in Premiere. It sounds like you tend to use lower thirds in Premiere so you have a need for mgrts (and I do have tutorials that cover how to do that - feel free to skip to the bottom or read on and learn WHY you're incorrect). Since this is an After Effects channel and most of my subscribers tend to work primarily in After Effects, not everyone creates lower thirds for use in Premiere, which is actually a moot point since (again) the crux of this particular tutorial is how to create an auto-resizable text box in After Effects. Even if this tutorial were about creating lower thirds, a great re-use of this project file would be to create the lower third the way you want it, then in future when you need to create it again, you have the template for use in After Effects. Prepping an After Effects file for mogrt export is an entirely different tutorial and would take at least 7 minutes to show. So, as you can see, there is a "use" for this tutorial and it is absolutely independent of creating a lower third as a mgrt file. If you'd like to see part 3 of a 3-part series I created for exporting a lower third that was created for purposes of being used as a mgrt, you can check it out right here - czcams.com/video/3SWKyPioCzE/video.htmlsi=cpPq-Q-K0uG9qdZG - Parts 1 and 2 show how to create the lower third itself. Part 3 shows how to prep and export the mgrt. Perhaps you'll find a great "use" for that tutorial since this particular one wasn't even created for the purpose you required to begin with. All the best, and thanks for watching!
