We all dream of piloting a Rothmans-liveried Porsche race car… and thanks to the kindness of Steve Shore at Shorade Accident Repair I've done just that for my latest video!
Away from his day job as CEO at Shorade (a Porsche recommended body repairer) Steve races his 986 Boxster S in the Boxster Cup, a popular grassroots championship run by Porsche Club GB Motorsport.
Steve explains how Shorade converted his car from an ordinary Boxster into a Rothmans-inspired race car, before I'm allowed to unleash it… on the public road!

Awesome video Lee , like my 996 I absolutely love driving my Boxster S , looking forward to some Great “B” road driving this year fella , hopefully catch up with you again this year at Fried Egg meet 👍
Another good video Lee. I raced against Steve in the Restoracing for a couple of years. It was awesome and I’m very proud of our third in championship trophy.
Rothmans is my favourite race livery and I'm a 986 owner, so this vid was right up my strasse.
"right up my Strasse", love it! Glad the video resonated.
Another great video Lee, the Boxster also sounds superb and IMO superb value for money.
Lee, my 2003 986 is totally original and has just 17k miles, happy for you to take for a drive anytime!
Thanks Andrew, that's very kind and I may well take you up on that!
Great video Lee. I love my 986. On track it is really well balanced and capable - in stock form. It is just as practical and fun for the road. I'll be getting a 911 at some point, but still want to keep the 986 for sure.
Completely agree with your sentiments, what a fantastic car you have. Driving Shorade's car has really opened my eyes to the merit of the Boxster platform - pretty unbeatable in terms of value for money.
Great video bro 😎
I've seen those wheels before. The geometry setup gurus in Atherstone have a pet 986 to which they have retrofitted PASM. They use it "to annoy GT3s at Oulton Park" and it has these wheels on, apparently they're super-light. I was already considering visiting Shorade for cosmetics repair of my 986 after I saw their work first hand at the NEC, now I am convinced! I just have to overcome the temptation to ask for a Martini livery...
Those wheels look like 1st Cayenne wheels, or am I wrong?
I fully encourage the Martini livery!! I'm sure Steve can source some ultra lightweight wheels for yours too…! Awesome to hear of the GT3-eating Boxster out there too.
@@alenseven11 The design is called Sport Techno. Optional wheels for the 996 Turbo (IIRC a touch wider than stock turbo wheels) and yes, was the 20" option for the 1st Gen Cayenne/957.1
Love the sport techno wheels. I have them on my 986 and it really sets it apart.
I love the door cards!!!
Living the dream Lee🤩
Absolutely, and the dream is a Rothmans Porsche race car!
Having had various 986 Boxsters for most years of the last 12 years are so it’s been great to see them finally getting the recognition and praise they deserve. I absolutely love them and have covered a fantastic 30K miles in my current one - they’re such a great package and a well sorted example is hard to beat, especially given their current price point.
Couldn't agree more!
Hi Paul, what has been your take on the 2.5 vs the 3.2 engines, if you have one? Thanks!
Wow,very nice 🚗🚨
I also like your podcast. Keep it up!
Thanks for listening!
Great video , the Boxster and Cayman are my two favourite Porsche.
This particular one's not road legal though..
Great video
Thanks!
I think I just saw that car last week 😃
My dad used to smoke Rothman's. Naturally I adored these livery Porsches lol
Ahahaha!!
Really need the specs on the wheel/tire combo
Don't the fried egg lights just look so right on the RothBox?
RothBox, love it!
I would like one for hillclimb!
Is that a UK only series? What wheels are they running?
Yes UK only for the Porsche Club Championship.
Pretty bizarre to only now recognise that the 986 is a good driver's car. It's always been excellent, easily better than the majority of now very expensive old 911s in pure driving terms, as opposed to brand cachet and fashion. For the record, I don't own a 986, so I'm not that guy, but it only takes a quick run in one to recognise they are fantastic driver's cars and you must have driven several beforehand, so all pretty odd.
I'd not driven one previously
I’ve got a Gen1 996 Carrera 2 manual coupe with fresh Hartech 3.7 oversize rebuild engine, let me know if you’d like to come have a drive and review Lee 👍
Thank you kindly for the offer, I'l bear it in mind!
So it's a stripped down 1998 Boxster but with extra weight added.
the 986 has always been a fantastic car but it was the snobby 911 drivers who rubbished it because it the 986S was £40-45k to buy new (£80-100k in todays terms) and it allowed people who couldn't quite stretch to the 911 to get behind the wheel of a very capable porsche
