I sang this song to my son from the time he was born and I still do and he's nine. he hates it now but I have never once been able to get through all the lyrics without my voice cracking. this song will always embody everything I ever wanted for him and it's just an amazing song at that.

Last summer Brent Smith and Zack Myers performed at a small bar (I was lucky enough to be friends with the owner) in town (acoustic set), they did 45, second chance, and a few other of the bands songs acoustically...they were outstanding, but when they did Simple Man, it simply blew me away...I love lynyrd skynyrd, but that's the most inspiring and heartfelt version I've ever heard...keep on rocking it out Shinedown.

+Ser Foxi there's a lot more to the song than just the vocals. The original had such a great mix of instrumentation that Shinedown left out completely in favor of a dulled-down acoustic. In that sense, the Shinedown version is far more dull. Personally I think Ronnie Van Zant's vocals fit the song better as well. Brent sings it far too grunge-y.
