#askgmbntech Hi guys, I was browsing for some reasonably priced knobbly 700x42c gravel tires and I came across the CST Pika tubeless ready... After looking them up I found out CST and Maxxis belong to the same parent company... Any thoughs? What would these tires be best suited for? Should I stay away or...? (disclaimer: they are HALF the price of similar well-known branded ones like Pirelli, Teravail, Schwalbe, Panracer or Continental... which makes all of my alarams go off)
I'm not sure why I would ever consider buying a "used" carbon frame. If I'm buying a frame, and then I send it off to have someone "check: it, then ir seems to me that the cost might be creeping to a point where it might be competitive with a new frame... with a warranty.
Especially now with prices being forced down…
My second hand carbon Orbea Rallon has most definitely been put through it's paces. There are plenty of videos on GMBN of Blake riding Pinkeye. Including the car park jibbing video with the 6 foot drop to flat. Thanks to Owen for answering the on tightening the linkage bolts on Pinkeye. Blake will happy to hear. It's the bike I ride the most. For some reason. When I ride Pinkeye. I have been getting my wheels off the ground more than normal. Not as much as Blake though. I like the Rich's reaction in Dirt Shed Show 471. When Blake was excited to see Pinkeye again.
I used tooth paste for seatpost friction, in a pinch. It worked. Now trying out carbon paste, working as well....Using a processed coconut oil, as well. It moisturizes and has health benefits, also.
One thing to remember with with oval chainrings is they can defeat the custom tune on your bikes suspension that keeps the bike from bobbing during pedalling. That was the major reason I gave up on them. Well that and It was cheaper/easierto get smaller chain rings on 6 bikes then it was to learn to ride different on the bikes I wanted to climb with.
The key to oval chainrings is to size it down by 2 teeth to achieve the same feeling on the gearing and cassette.otherwise it will make the bike feel slightly harder to pedal. 29" wheels should use 30t and 27.7/26" wheels should use a 32t. Even if the returns feel marginal, ovals allow you to use a smaller chainring for greater clearance and is worth a try.
I’ve purchased two used Ibis. One Hakka and another DV9. Both are ridden hard, and perfectly fine.
And lets not forget..... chamois shorts are designed to be worn next to the skin. The more frequently you ride the less uncomfortable your sit bones get. i.e. if you've been riding regularly for a while - it just doesn't hurt compared to newer riders.
when i got my Brooks saddle i decided to go on a long ride to break it in. I jumped on my hardtail mtb in a regular pair of shorts and my 2.4 tires and went on a 30 mile road ride. At the end of the day I couldn't walk and I was walking funny for atleast 2 weeks after. It felt like someone had hit me in the butt with a baseball bat, it was so painful. I proceeded to go on Amazon and buy a proper pair of padded biking shorts that go under a pair of regular shorts. And for all that pain it didn't really break in the saddle one bit.
It took me over 3000km to break in my Brooks saddle. First 1000km it was like riding a stool.
I was looking at a few in January using the Coin tap but that doesn't work really unless bike tubes are all same but they are all different sizes, shapes n hollows and shorter makes all different sounds longer can make a sound whare you think is a defect i gave up and just went new! Atleast i got a 5yr warranty on my carbon frame going new!
I was told oval chainring gives you a bit better on flat pedals. They don't make any difference clipped in
#askgmbntech I usually keep my full suspension bike in an bike stand when it's not being used, is there any disadvantages to this?
#askgmbntech
How do i check my deraileur, if it is bent?
Got a punch on my deraileur (GX Eagle). It was bent strongly. I changed the hanger. It shifts better again, but not perfect. I am not sure 100% if the deraileur it self is bent too. How can i check this best?
#askgmbntech
I converted a 3x8 to a 1 x 11 but now i am thinking of chainline
What is a good chain line
In what gear should the chain be straight ?
Oval chainrings work but the difference is so small there is only one scenario when you can actually tell very clearly. On my hardtail the point when you are pedaling hard and you can feel the pedal pulses squish the rear tire (Especially at low tire pressures), that effect is reduced with an oval ring. Now that means it is working all the time but the only advantage is putting power down smoother on loose uphills. Now is that worth it? 🤷♂
Decathlon chamois bibs are good for the money, i prefer them to the ones that came with my Fox Racing shorts.
BTW, saddle sores should not be overlooked. There's a cyclist here in Santa Paula, CA, that had a saddle sore that morphed into something bigger from flesh-eating bacteria. Last I heard, the doctors had placed him in an induced coma, and he's on life support, fighting for his life. I hope he makes it, but it doesn't look good. Never neglect proper basic wound care. I never knew this could happen.
#askgmbntech I have an older generation 27.5 all mountain/enduro bike with a very good spec that I've upgraded over time. Thinking of upgrading the frame but staying with 27.5 wheels. Am I dooming myself to a life of small wheel misery? Should I bite the bullet and buy a new, low-spec 29'er?
You guys come to Freiburg Bike Festival! :)
I put an oval chainring on my 1 x 10 commuter hybrid and noticed no difference at all. Maybe it causes less fatigue? But I think you would need be be a pro doing timed long distance training loops both with and without it to notice any significant difference. I only bought mine as I picked it up super cheap 😅 I'd have been just as happy to have got a round one.
Commuter bike? That would be why then. Oval chain rings are for the steep climbs.
#askgmbntech Hey guys! I have a regular 18 tooth ratchet on my DT Swiss hubs and I'm thinking in upgrading, will the 36t or 54t option "damage" my rear suspension performance? PS: It's a 130mm rear travel trail bike. Cheers
@Loukou here is a different kind of tip for riding long distances , you should wear your oldest pair of underwear when you ride since you already had the " breaking in " period so they won't create any problem , I tried once to ride a longer distance with a brand new pair and yeah it didn't worked well at all
i had a santa cruz bronson cc for 6yrs….sold it to 13yr old who’s still ripping on it 18mths later, so i guess some brands are…
Just as safe as anything you buy all frames fail no matter material. Just make good decision. Don’t rush into any deal.
Don't you have videos Dodd made on bedding in by sanding the discs first for the pads to bite into? Sure I've seen that on here? Seen it on near every channel just interesting from a mechanics point he's not mentioned this kinda best process
Can water with washing up liquid contaminate brakes?
Most degreaser will leave some kind of residue, you should use brake cleaner on the rotors and pads since minute particules can lead to pad material buildups, in other words; poor braking, juddering, inconsistencies in friction leading to even bigger buildup and overheating etc etc
It's not absolutely necessary since most minute particules will be "burnished" when you'll start using your brakes again but if you're heavy and heavy on your brakes you might want to take decontamination seriously 😂
I find I can climb two gears higher when using an oval vs. round, on flats no real difference.
Used frames of any type are a gamble but so much cheaper than new, since you know I'm not sponsored or anything like the folks in this channel.
#askgmbntech - ok here is a nice one for the oldies (I'm looking at you Owen) - Braided Brake Hoses - there was a time when it was a proper upgrade to a bike, with the logic that the strengthened hose increased the pressure and you ended up with more power through the caliper. Was this marketing BS? and if it wasn't, why are we not all running them now?
#ASKGMBNTECH Is Owen's hair real? Seem unlikely.
Get whoever is flogging it to huck it Infront of you first 😂
#askgmbntech hello beautiful people of GMBN and GMBN Tech! It’s spring here in South Korea and I wanna ask some tips on how to setup my hard tail xc mtb for a nice springtime bikepacking trip. Cheers and happy spring! 🌸
Welds on alloy bikes can have hairline cracks so second hand ally bikes aren't 100% safe.
Short answer, no. Unless you want to spend a ridiculous amount of money proving your potential purchase is safe to ride when you could use said money to buy a shiny new bike which is guaranteed.
If you have access to a specialist with IR thermography and the frame isn't more than 5 yrs old, wasn't really used and exposed to UVs
Pretty safe 😂
Take any used bike to a bike shop and have it checked out before buying.
It can be tricky to get a seller to agree to this as it's a lot of work for them with no guarantee of sale. Best thing to do is befriend your local bike mechanic and ask them to come out in their free time 🤘
Even though he didn’t bring up road bikes we know Orennn is a roadie
“Aft Crack” -Stockton Rush
Yet another reason why Carbon is wank. The retail price is super high, but the resale value is shit because people don’t trust used Carbon. Buy Steel/alloy.
Marathon Man?
Is it a good idea to buy ANYTHING second hand? There's a reason it's been put up for sale.
I've never had an issue with my ergon saddle comfort till i went on a longer bike ride all day oh my god i was broken i couldn't sit down on it so uncomfortable for long journeys
Imma say it once, if you buy it from a guy like me you better off getting a cheap trifox frame instead!
_I'm the destroyer of bikes..._
😂
I stopped wearing a chamois last year. I've not regretted it once. I highly recommend it.
“Ask the seller”
Well if they want to sell it wtf u think they gonna say
I don't resale my bikes without full disclosure since I would feel like an ahole but I'm not a carbon specialist, ya know ppl know what they know. It's usually not a lot 😂
I got simply one word for it. No,...either new or never. And I will never buy a carbon frame ever.
I’ve bought 3 carbon bikes over the last two years. Two treks and an niner. The last trek was a rail 9.9 in perfect shape with an extra battery for 2700$. Everyone bought bikes during COVID, rode em a couple of times, then sat in the garage. It’s safer than buying a used car. You have no idea how they drove it judging by their appearance. But with a bike it’s easy to tell by the rider. And if I don’t have my padded liners, I’m not riding.
That's an interesting take on it! Thanks for sharing 🤘
I don't use bibs or anything of that nature, it's pretty nasty if it gets wet 🤢 idk I've been out riding for days I've never felt the need to bathe my balls in sweat and dust...
