Great Reaction! Many of the lyrics are the drug of choice talking to the addict, "I will elevate you just enough to bring you down". Other sections are the addict crying out for help, "Jesus, won't you fking whistle, Something but the past and done?" (Jesus tell me something more than what the bible already states, give me practical help to deal with this addiction). Keep going down the Tool rabbit hole and spiral out 🌀🌀🌀

The singer is performing as if he is going through withdrawals from drugs/alcohol. It was for the “performance” - and spot on!
Most all of Tool lyrics are just as cryptic, for the listener to figure for themselves. That is one reason why Tool never grows old. Years from now, listen again, it’ll mean something different based on your current stage of life experience.
Tool is 100% pure ART - disguised as a rock band.
You can find a lot of songs of them as “audio with lyrics” videos - just check the run time.
And - SOME Tool “songs” are actually two or three songs combined sequentially on their albums.
Spiral Out and Learn To Swim!

The song is (obviously) about addiction. It is either about the addict's self loathing knowing that the drugs and/or alcohol have made him unreliable. And while he wants to break away from it, he can't. Or it is that it is the drugs 'talking' to the addicted mind. The addiction doesn't hide that its promises are lies and that the high is only temporary and the crash will be even worse. But it also knows the addict is going to keep using so doesn't matter.
*** Also very interestingly in the studio version the lyric is "Jesus won't you F'ing whistle." But in this live version he sings "Mother Mary won't you whisper." It changes it every so slightly. Jesus whistling is like him summoning his flock. It makes me think the addict wants to be 'called home' and end it all. The addict is saying 'just get it over with already.' But Mother Mary whispering is more of asking for help. 'Tell me how to fix this and go on with my life.' It is very rare for Tool to change anything about a song. They play live like they do for the studio track note for note. Seriously, go listen to the studio version, were it not for the poor recording quality of this video you might think it is the studio version. So this change is particularly interesting to me and it puts a very different vibe on the song.

Undertow album has some songs, but it’s albums “Aenima”, “Lateralus”, and “10,000 Days” that put them in GOD MODE!! Their latest album “Fear Inoculum” also has some elite songs too.

Yooo, I'm waiting for another episode of Tool reactions :D great time watching you!
edit: btw the song is about addiction, the damage it can deal not only to the addicted, but also others, and portrays the mind of addicted person pretty well, speaking as a recovered alcoholic. Its pretty sad, but very well put into a performance and music.

I'm so glad you are enjoying Tool! Maynard is an intense performer.
I see this song as a loose dialogue between an addict and their addiction.., an inward battle.

New subscriber here to weigh in, because I liked that you liked the song & are discovering Tool for the first time; you have no idea how many fans both love & envy all of the reactors on here who get to fall in love with Tool for the first time, haha. So I’ll probably get pushback, because Tool are very often deliberately vague in the defining of giving much context to interpret their lyrics, & increasingly so as their music progressed & approach to making the Art matured & evolved. ***That said*** … This song, when it first came about & information/interview sources online were sparse (Read: Did Not Exist, as the Internet as we understand it today, did not yet exist… - nevertheless-) with actual quotes from Maynard being few & far between, however this song in particular, Maynard stated that writing the album he had been delving heavily into philosophy & psychology, as well as the (Christian) Church, all while processing his own inner turmoil within his family, as his mother was a big, big believer & a Jehovah’s Witness, which conflicted with his own beliefs, & family relations. This song is probably one of Maynard’s (most widely understood & interpreted) early forays into heavy use of double-entendre, for the listener to A) take the lyrics at face value, & view it under the lens of an addict & their wrestling the grips of addiction, or B) a la Karl Marx’ quote regarding Religion being “the Opiate* of the Masses,” the song is a tongue-in-cheek indictment of Religion, as its inherent limitations on human growth & evolution.
(*Further credence given when considering the album this song debuted on is titled “Opiate”)
