You’re the man Kev! Sorry for trying to psych you out before the test 😂 you did great
Thank you!!! Hope I didn’t disappoint you!
Kevin you cannot disappoint Seth, i suppose he still cannot kick off the fastened lid of a bottle, the bar is very low for disappointing seth.
So when are you two going to compete at street beefz like icyMike did in his playlist?
@@KevinLeeVlog Well done Kevin! I hope this continues.
I dunno what Ryu/style Sensei Seth practices, but we also do (a different version) of Gekkisai (both dai ichi and dai nii) in Okinawan Goju Ryu.
My unprofessional and unsolicited opinion/tip re: kata - draw upon your previous martial arts skills.
There's a lot of parallels and similarities with wing chun and older versions of karate.
It's a lot of extra work overall, but when you find your own "style"of karate, I'm sure it'll be awesome.
Until then, do as your Sensei says.... wouldn't wanna get you into trouble 😅
"Credentials" - 2nd Dan ITF based (but not affiliated) Taekwondo, & intermediate Okinawan Goju Ryu karate colour belt atm. (Have done other martial arts, but only graded in those two)
20 plus years totally translated.
Very well done.
I like how Seth's tone completely changes when he's testing. We all turn into our parents eventually.
Yesss!! He is different in testing mode! Gotta take it seriously!
I had at times the temptation to text his mom if Seth is not properly working
Kevins like 6 years older than me I think 😂
Seth, you are in a martial sense still the older brother from qualification, even if kevin is older.
I think Seth is like 29 and Kevin 36, even Jeff Chan is 32 is guess.
Should I earn my orange belt next?
Now reverse. Can Sensei seth earn his first batch in Wing Chun in one week? ;)
@@ShugenjyaI second this! Who else wants to see Sensei Seth take his Wing Chun test? 😂
@@KevinLeeVlog💯
Please do more content with the personal trainer that was emphasizing structure and importance of muscles
You look brilliant for a yellow belt !💛 ✨️
it's so interesting how when you do a karate kata it still looks like a kung-fu form. (reminds me of jesse's videos about karate origins from kung-fu)
I don’t have that karate look…yet!
Back in the early days of the Internet, I ran across a website for a school that combined Karate and Bak Mei. It kind of looked like that.
It's just a little adjustment to your 身 法. Find a video you like and try to imitate the movement. You'll get it in no time.
(I'll tell you a little secret. If you learn the 2 katas Seisan and Naihanchi, that's really all you need.)
@@GermanSausagesAreTheWurst what are you on about
@@zackgee3084 I'm on the couch.
well shotokan based karate is mostly long distance Shōrin-ryū and short distance shorei ryu. A lot of the shorei ryu techniques you gonna find in southern styles like Hak Fu Mun 黑虎門 , like upper body movements while fists on the hip etc. while shorin ryu is the meaning for southern shaolin/ incense shop boxing. It is the basic form of fighting you learn before specialising into different styles, similiar to hong chuan 小洪拳 in the northern styles
Kevin is such a babyface that his gi is made of pure light :)
Congrats. That made me remember ages ago when I got my yellow belt. The testing was pretty much identical. I remember trying not to grin when they said to wait there a minute at the end...cause I knew they were grabbing my yellow belt. There were actually two kids that did fail, and they were told immediately at the end. I think that day was the first day they started letting me sit in and watch the black belts afterward.
Wow! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Love Seths statement about actually knowing what the moves are for in a Kata. I tought kids for a while in Taekwondo. When we were practicing Hyeong (Kata) i would disect it for the kids so they dont just run through moves. for example while their going through the Hyeong i would attack them if they need to block and let them hit me if they need to attack. of course i let them block and i keep distance so there wont be a chance anybody gets hurt. but that process helps really to distinguish wehn to "snap" or to move your hips right.
Yea my teacher never explained the moves in the kata
Coming from a Goju Ryu background and seeing Geki Sai in another style is wild! Always crazy to see how the same form changes between styles. Great vid!
Do not stop at yellow!
I don’t plan to! lol
@@KevinLeeVlog OSU!
OSS to both of you to Well I have my orange belt test today
@@TheNiteNinja Good luck to you! I'm orange myself. Working on Purple Belt Kata.
One small detail with thr front breakfall. Turn your head to the side when you fall. keep your nose safe
This was great. I’m so glad he talked about the techniques behind the kata movements at the end.
as a Karateka it's nice to see Seth in Karate mode for once 😄
Congrats. Every Dojo and every style has different standards. But that's pretty common for the beginning levels. Though some go a little harder than others. At my dojo I have been at for years now every test starts with a Half mile run. Then warm up stretches. (which includes planks for a min at least.) then Jumping jacks, push ups, Sit ups. Then we move on to normal standards. Punches, Kicks, Combinations. Because our dojo mixes in A form of Jujitsu we also through in locks and holds. Some 20 second Drills for throws. (you and your partner preform a Throw followed by a submission on right and left sides as many times as possible in 20 seconds.) Ground Rolling, Sparing. And THEN you get to do what ever Kata you are up for next. Different levels get different kata of course. And The higher you get the more things you have to do. And the lower Ranked Q belts usually finish before the higher ranked. (Black belt tests are a different matter that are entire day events.)
It should be noted that the instructors and other blackbelts already know who will pass mostly. Based on who comes in. What they do during class and How much they give. The test is about wearing them down. Making the tired and sore. Pushing to the limit THEN see how well they preform and how much they give. Its the FINAL piece for deciding who progresses and who does not. But 90% is still during class.
Kevin you did a fantastic job! Great work!
15:00 I liken a good Kata to Speaking Clearly and telling a Good Story: you must Enunciate every "Syllable" clearly by making each move distinct, and Emphasize the most important points, the Story Beats, typically with a pause and kiai.
Oh, I love this one Kevin. It is probably one of my top 5 of your videos! Starting as a white belt is so humbling and such a good experience for us. You were a pretty solid and snappy white belt 😂. If I had my way everything would start with a white gi 😂. Hopefully, this one is useful to someone just starting out. Looking forward to meeting you in Greece at the end of summer.
It is definitely useful for someone just starting out! 🥋
@@orkunkaansimsek yay Orkun!!!!!!!!
Both are serious, very humble and respecful, as what a true martial artists should be. Respect!
I'd love to see you continue through the ranks of Karate! It's fun to see how your other martial arts training has influenced your movement and technique, and I'm curious to see how it will influence you as you attain higher ranked belts.
Holding the belt behind your back like that made me flash back to every single martial arts instructor I've ever had.
I am always so fascinated how different karate can be within karate itself the curriculum of shotokan (what I used to train in) is completely different from goju ryu (what I am doing now) and both are also completely different from what's in this video, makes me think of the mountain with lots of different winding roads that Jesse Enkamp talked about
That kata is like green belt in Shotokan, it's a lot of techniques for a first grade!
I'm working towards my third belt in shotokan, 7th kyu. The kata in this video is pretty complex. No wonder he stumbled a bit.
Congratulations!!! Its interesting to see the focus of the yellow belt in karate and thar they include the breakfalls. Do you know what style of Karate Sensei Seth teaches? Thanks!
I believe it's ameridote...
He teaches American kempo I believe
@@codyspikes4381 Thanks
I remember my first karate test. Well done Kevin 😊
What style of Karate is this? I studied Shotokan myself but this style seems like it has more to it from a lower level haha
you are such a great martial artist to take on such endeavors, I would love to get you on my podcast to hear your story!
Congratulations!
seth kept the axe from the buhurt ep hahahahaha
Congrats!
The too tense kata because it's a test is a classic.
Hi Kevin. I want to kindly ask you if its possible to teach myself spilts as i dont have a tutor and I'm teaching myself JKD.
Great job sir
How long was this? My yellow belts are at least 2 hours long. Sometimes 3.
Congratulations kevin On your new belt.
I liked the way you nailed your form Kevin. But perhaps a little high stance? I don't know about kenpo karate, but that's something a European sensei would have opinions about
As a practitioner of goju ryu its interesting how American kempo does gekisai dai ichi differently from how i learned it
It was good. Well done 👍🏻
i want to see you take a kyokushin class now
Any good teacher you can recommend?
@@KevinLeeVlog unfortunately not in America as I'm in England ever over here tho there are plenty
Hope Kevin goes for Enshin or Ashihara Karate branch of Kyokushin
Kevin, i suppose there is not much competition to choose from, the nearest to you guys would probably be Ligo Dojo of Budo Karate
Ashihara in the US seems to be only in california search for ashiharausa
More a question for Seth but is that Kata derived from Bassai Dai?
I think if you have a generel knowledge about all aspects of fighting, all beginner belts are achievable pretty fast. Because normally its always absolute basics first and they don't change much between fighting systems
inspiring!
I want friends like this. The type that help make you better.
I would like to see this being a series. either kevin go through all different martial arts and grab a test in a week, or find someone who has no knowledge of martial arts and make them good enough to pass :D
I really like how practical and very creative the Karate of Sensei Seth's Dad have.... it seems to be hybrid of some of the elite striking arts like boxing traditional and modern karate some taekwondo and kickboxing etc. very legit and effective. I do hope sensei seth will make a vlog about the history of their family's martial arts and it's lineage. that would be so awesome for I am such a fan of all you guys Mike, Shane, wonderboy, rokas, varga ETC.
How I wish to have a yellow belt from their school as well...
You should have perfected the Kata with Jesse Enkamp then had Seth say is it was bad/weird: on film for Jesse to see! 🤣
Jesse Enkamp"s katas looks amazing
Awesome!
what style of karate is that?
I do shotokan and i think there are some wierd aspekts in this style but i wanna learn more before talking
Kempo or kenpo okinawan if im not misstaken
It's a mostly goju-ryu based American Kenpo iirc. Pretty sure it's not the ed parker version though
seth is doing black cat kempo, master ken is doing kenpo 5.0. No idea what seth is teaching, he still trained at some other dojos
From white to yellow half year and than its up to your quality as a human being how fast you grow. Most people need 5 till 7 years to become a black belt, in a legitimatel Karate Dojo. Greetings from the Netherlands 🥋 OSU 🥋 i talk about Old school Karate not the easy to do American style Karate.
That’s what I heard!
@@KevinLeeVlog i am a 3 dan black belt Goju Ryu Karate and walk the road to do it right plus in the Netherlands martial arts have a High degree ( real bad schools there are not because its a small world ). We have many Champions in Judo, Karate, Kickboxing, boxing and Thai Boxing. Greetings from the Netherlands
I got a karate yellow belt as a teenager and I didn’t know any of that (although I DID memorize a kata). Pretty sure I was in a McDojo. Hey- well done!!!
What brand of Karate?
Kev is so crisp! Those Katas were ON IT! I know Tripple S wouldn't have given you the yellow if you didn't earn it!.
With regard to kata, to quote one of my favourite movie martial arts teaching scenes (Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon as his character is being introduced), "You need emotional content."
that was fun. now another martial art? or another belt, or just done?
Que?? A mí me pusieron dos rayitas amarillas a mi cinta Blanca en mi primer examen, y eso fue tras meses de entrenar dos veces por semana. Pero tenía 9 años.
Congrats :)
🔥🔥🔥
Interesting how very different this from Shotokan Karate in the JKA organization. Both technique and selection is quite different. Now ofc Kevin is way better than any yellow belt out there but it would be nice to get the differences between Seth and say Jessies styles.
My fave CZcamsr
I almost failed my yellow belt test back in 1989 because of fooling around during the test.
It depends where you get it and who gives it to you, which varies widely. A higher belt doesn't mean you're better than someone with a lower belt in a real fight.
Which hand did sensei Seth put his glove on... Then realized it was the wrong hand... Lol
i just wished that karatenerd was there as well to mess you even more..hehehe..may be when you think of moving up he will be there to help or do the test
Next time!!!
Now that you've tried out karate, any plans to take Skallagrim up on his offer to try out HEMA?
It’s on my list!!!
@@KevinLeeVlog looking forward to it! Hope you get to try out some dagger/unarmed wrestling alongside the sword stuff as well! (Ringen in German, Armizare in Italian)
Kevin is gonna bag skallagrim
Can I asked you sensei Set ..why is your fist almost vertical? It's odd isn't it supposed to be horizontal 🤔
WOOHOOO!! 👏👏
Surprised they were doing a Okinawa Goju kata. I always thought Seth was one of the eye gouge, nutclutching American Kenpo guys.
Now you have yellow, you must go on to at least a blue belt
🤯🤯🤯
Cool. Nice vídeo 📹
Thank you!!
Seth, "I'll be right back." He did that just to mess with Kevin.
It's so weird to me as both a TKD guy and a Karate guy to hear Jhoonbee in front of a Karate kata
I think a yellow belt could be earned in most belt-graded martial arts in a week of all-day private lessons, if one is already athletic, agile, and flexible. Somebody like a gymnast might even be able to manage an orange or green belt.
Why does the white belt kata look so difficult? OMG hahahaha 😮
I like how in every video Kevin pretends he is not amazingly skilled in martial arts, bro is so humble
Now you are on par with Icy Mike.
CZcams Karate fight incoming?
Well i mean realistically "no" however as you were just saying and probably know by now, you do already know/practice "karate". Silat/wing chun and karate are all highly related, have the same techniques/ base concepts within them
Congratulations....
Out of interest? - what form of Karate is it? it's very different to the Shotokan syllabus / kata and Blue Tiger Karate I know. No falls and rolls in ours
Sensei Seth does American Kenpo so I would assume that. We would have blocks instead of falls&rolls normally our beginner course takes about three months and you need about 30 practise sessions.
I’ve never understood why people are keeping their hands so low when they block, or when they do the kata or techniques. I was always taught to make sure your wrist was at least as high as your eyebrows. If it’s not and you try to block a punch more than likely you will get hit. This has proven right in fighting. I’m surely no big fighter but it has happened. Teachers need to pay attention to how they teach blocks, if your hand or wrist is at chin level you probably won’t like the outcome
Bro tried to make karate taekwondo
Try to collab with Togo Ishii
Seth has trouble knowing which hand goes into the glove.
I studied Shorin ryu twice a week for a month before they let me earn a white belt.
TRY GETTING A YELLOW BELT IN KYOKUSHIN KARATE LIKE THAT WONT HAPPEN
Ohh so now u guys karate?
Knew it was gonna be AG1. Pretty sure you're already a Karate blackbelt Kev. Or equivalent.
Big kata for yellow belt
OSU!
He let you off easy 😉 shotokan are more picky with the stances and form
Do you hear that Sound?
Like stretching leather
That's Jesse, smiling from ear to ear. 😊
Now next belt up in one more week and so on, get you BB in 8w or so... :)
Best white belt I've ever seen
The first belt test isn't physically hard. But it is THE WORST mentally. There's nothing like those white belt jitters on test day.
WONDER BOY IS TEACHING YOU ONE STYLE OF KARATE TRY KYOKUSHIN
Make SURE you put "Karate Yellow Belt" at the TOP of your Martial Arts Credentials from NOW ON!
Sensei Seth teach me kata
YOU COULD NEVER SAY THAT TO A KYOKUSHIN PRACTIONER ONE WEEK BLACK BELT LOL
If you training everyday for a week..you might overtake students who train twice a week for 3 months,2 hours per session.
That is not how you throw a ridge hand
DUDE YOU WANNA LERAN KARATE LEARN KYOKUSHIN KARATE THATS THE NAVY SEALS OF KARATE
