  • Opening in theaters and VOD August 21
    Directed by: Michael Almereyda
    Starring: Ethan Hawke, Eve Hewson, Hannah Gross & Kyle MacLachlan
    Brilliant, visionary Nikola Tesla (Ethan Hawke) fights an uphill battle to bring his revolutionary electrical system to fruition, then faces thornier challenges with his new system for worldwide wireless energy. The film tracks Tesla’s uneasy interactions with his fellow inventor Thomas Edison (Kyle MacLachlan) and his patron George Westinghouse (Jim Gaffigan). Another thread traces Tesla’s sidewinding courtship of financial titan J.P. Morgan (Donnie Keshawarz), whose daughter Anne (Eve Hewson) takes a more than casual interest in the inventor. Anne analyzes and presents the story as it unfolds, offering a distinctly modern voice to this scientific period drama which, like its subject, defies convention.

    2021.... still waiting for a high budget movie about Nikola Tesla that isn't sh!t.
    For a man that literally changed the world, it boggles me how little attention is going into creating something breathtaking in memory of his monumental contributions to society.

      Actually, as I scrolled trough the comments, I noticed a lot of Serbian people commenting here.. Don't want to sound ignorant or anything, just want to clarify why it looks like "everyone knew him personally" to you. We learn about Tesla since the grade 1 (age 7) in Serbia, gradually about his personal life and inventions. It's a part of the school system in Serbia. All the details trough his childhood, up to his death in the New York hotel room (FBI killed him and stole his inventions, but he managed to send half of the valuable paperwork back to his family in Serbia before that), even after his death what happened to his left over undiscovered inventions, up to now.. ALso, Serbia is a very small country, where everyone knows everyone and their families and family trees. Like for example, my family knew Tesla's family, even thought I was never interested to study deep down into his past, since they teach us in schools and it's nothing new for us, the facts that Serbian people are often taken as bad trough history and nobody takes us seriously. For instance: we knew about Tesla the whole our lives, and he is getting world wide "famous" only in the past years now..

      @@replynotificationsdisabled yeah man, I feel you. I'm somewhat familiar with the US schooling system.. What we think is that you guys are under-educating. Like focusing only on the feild of work you'll do later in life, rather than the whole world's global history/economy/geography/culture. Which is good in one point, by my personal opinion. At the other side : we learn too much about stuff we don't need actully and very often our kids fail to focus on one thing: having too much of a distraction. But yeah, US doesn't teach the whole truth either there.. I guess someone is conviniet to do so..

    I was tolerating the spin on what Tesla was like up until the "I like to get scratched if necessary" line in the trailer. Tesla was a loner. A deeply introverted and intellectual person. He was in love only once in highschool back in Croatia. He had nothing to do with American femme fatale women. He was not flirting in bars telling people that he likes to get scratched. Movie The Prestige got Tesla more right than this, and Prestige is a movie about magic machines that clone people.
    And I read some comments here saying that people don't know what Tesla was like anyway. I'm from Croatia, I know what Tesla was like. He was a Serb who's family lived in Croatia. His house where he grew up is still here. We know everything about him. We learn about him since grade 1. Everyone in the old Yugoslavian territory is proud of that man. I have his auto-biography that he wrote himself in both English and Croatian. Don't fucking tell me that I don't know what Tesla was like. This movie is a joke. And the fact that I like Ethan Hawke as an actor just makes this even more of an insult.

      If you knew anything about his life, and if you have even a little dose of respect for such genius, you would've called him Croatian Serb because he loved his country and stated many times throughout life proudness of his country and what it has given to him when he needed it. He even wrote in Croatian for God's sake.
      It's really a shame, because Serbia at that time was poor Ottoman province with practically no education, or any cultural institutions for that matter, and if he was born there he would've probably became somekind of goatherd or priest in the best scenario and his genius and talent would vanish by time.

    After the destruction of the film two years ago "Edison, the man who enlightened the world", finally a film that tries to do historical justice. Produced by a minor company it did not have the prominence it deserved, on the other hand it is now clear to everyone that Americans do whatever they want with history through their media power. In any case, rather faithful on a historical and personal level, in accordance with the presence of J.P. Morgan who in total vanity considered himself as Tesla, which is totally unreal given that Morgan aimed (and still do) only to crush the peoples out of thirst for domination and wealth. A film that makes us understand how genes, transparent and pure, are treated by the system, first Galileo Galilei, after italian Dr. DiDonno of Mantua. A film that is more current than ever, which helps to understand how today's corrupt world really works.

A very nice novel set in the 19th century and has to do with the discovery of electricity and the business war that broke out between Thomas Edison and Westinghouse. The protagonist is the lawyer Paul Kravath, while the landmark character of the story is none other than the well-known Nikola Tesla.

    This is kind of why I expected. Not at all as accurate. You’re trying to create this likable outstanding character of charm and social intelligence. If we’re being honest people thought he was odd and unusual. He was a charming intelligent man but he wasn’t romantic. He didn’t chat it up with women in a bar. He didn’t touch people’s hands let alone kiss them he was a germaphobe. You want him to be unrealistic. I’ll watch the movie for fun but with little to 0 expectations that it’ll have any accurate applications to it. Now, I’m going to sleep.

      That's always how it's going to be with movies, it's subjective what kind of interpretation you want to see on screen. I get the desire to see a very realistic version come to life, but usually movies go for some kind of balance. The thing with germs though was selective, some people think he sometimes used it as an excuse to preserve his private space when it suited him (according to Seifer's biography). Like the girl says in the trailer, a lot about Tesla is murky, so you can sort of read into it what you want really.

    • @zysis
      @zysis Před 3 lety +1

      @@piersyfy4148 What matters is what Tesla himself had said and was often quoted as saying in reference to his aversion toward human contact. He saw people as capacitors according to his own notes.
