Play For Dream MR: 8K Vision Pro Alternative Running Android!

- Play For Dream’s new MR headset, officially named the Play For Dream MR, features a pair of MicroOLED screen that can produce 8K visuals. Powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, it is capable of real-time pass-through video and spatial computing with a latency as low as 14ms. The software is based on Android 14 so it can run Android apps, in addition to Play For Dream’s proprietary software. The headset will go on sale in October, with a retail price to be announced later (under US$2,000).

Actually, Meta Quest headsets run a custom version of Android, so this isn't the "first Android spacial computer"

That depends on what we are talking about. The Quest 2 was launched with an app (mostly gaming) store, with scant OS-like functionalities. Even today with the Quest 3 and Pro, the META OS doesn't even have a file manager and several basic functions of an actual OS; it's hardly a proper OS. If this HMD's OS is actually a full fledged OS, I would, in fact consider it to be the first one.
Technically android is just Linux so every android device is just running custom Linux.

The only things that worries me is the OS; the specs look impressive.
I use my Vision Pro everyday for 5-6 hours straight to work. I use it on a reclining chair and put the windows on the ceiling. I have never worked so comfortably. We have to change our minds and start working in different ways that were just not possible before and not try to work as before but wearing a headset. Not until they get smaller and lighter.
I want to Play in games on Vision Pro, same how I cant starting GeforceNow on macOS, but I sink Vision Pro will not give mw this experience, unfortunately(((
Same here. Being able to respond to texts and work in emails in the headset natively is awesome!! I run a couple tech companies so I'm always on the go. So have a killer setup at home does me no good. So having virtually unlimited screens and screen sizes are perfect for me. And bringing my MacBook Pro into the headset via virtual screen with next to zero lag is the icing on the cake. If I have one gripe outside of the visionOS software not being as mature as iOS, is I wish I had HDMI in so I could connect things like a PS5 or a Nintendo Switch.

I doubt it. Apple's RDF is maintained through marketing that pretends there is no competition. They are masters at appealing to snobbery. Let the Vision Pro rot in low sales, I say.

Ah man, the headset looks awesome and ticks a lot of my check boxes, but no release outside of Asia is a huge bummer.

Would love to know how good the lenses are- do you get ghosting, blur, reflections or is it a clean image?
What's the likelihood of being able to import one of these once it launches in October or when it releases in other countries next year? I remember American consumers being able to import Pico 4's, granted it was already set for an international release.

Hi Ben! Do you prefer using headsets or AR glasses like XReals for productivity? If one need multiple screens, then headset is the way to go right?
It's more a simple display than a computer. Not a single image of the UI.
Once the battery is on the headset it will weight a ton.
I would 100% add a top strap. I hate clamping my head with this mechanism.
@ben resolution in VR/AR headsets is measured using Pixels per degree (PPD) not Pixels per inch (PPI). Also what’s the battery life on this device? Is the battery detachable? This is not the first Android headset, there have been plenty before that most notably the Quest.
I just have uploaded a thorough demo and review of this prototype to my channel, feel free to check it out! So far the battery is on the back (similar to quest pro), I've also shared my recommendations with Play for Dream.
let see when it comes out. It is still bulky. It would be outstanding if they are able to bring it down to the Rokid Ar lite size with out compromising in features.

I hate the "8k" BS marketing. It's just under 4k per eye like every other headset being launched.
Plus they're showing off screens in the prototype that aren't ready for manufacturing yet. So either the production will be delayed, or the screens will change and reduce in quality. BOE doesn't have those screens available for production as of now.
And for the record, it's an interesting headset that I'm keeping my eyes on. But I don't like the BS marketing stuff they're using that's intended to deceive. reminds me of Xreal

if it's 4kx4k per eye so it's actualy 8k
It is 3840 x 3840 per eye, so per-eye it is higher than TV's 4K definition: 3840 × 2160. 2 eyes comebined it will be 7680 x 3840. slightly lower than 8K TV‘s definition of 7680 x 4320

@@yuefei9243if you open a virtual screen on that headset, you can see it at a maximum resolution of 4k. No higher. Call it 8k when it has 8k/eye so I can actually use it to watch 8k content.

Can you expand on what makes this headset more open? Is that I can link it with windows and use something like SteamVR and Windows virtual desktop or are we only talking about side loading android apps? Thanks!
Hi running android means you can in theory load any Android app on it. Vision pro is a closes system so only apple approved apps for vision pro can run. For example the vision pro doesn't even have a CZcams app. I'm sure with this one we can load CZcams Android app on it easily

Oh we are getting real close to some really fun imaginary friends now. Combine with a Chat GPT conversation bot and voice pack. It will sell much better than vision pro. I hope that they DON'T put the battery in the headset. If AR glasses have taught us anything, it is to keep the face weight down. I don't mind sliding a cord behind my ear if it means not crushing my face and neck. Easier to just swap out batteries for longer sessions too.

Actually it's a good idea to put the battery in the back of the headset, it's just the matter of weight distribution. Without the counter weight from the back, your face will support all the weight and it will actually feel heavy and uncomfortable, that's the exact problem with Vision Pro. Unless you make the front part as light as a regular AR glasses.
Please do a video when it's out for consumers can we buy it in the UK

Meta are supposed to be opening up their Horizon OS to other parties. Their VR systems are based on the XR2 chipset. I wonder if there is any possibility that at some point we will see the Horizon OS on this headset.
They are aware of this option, but Meta is being quite slow with actual partnerships, so Play For Dream does its own thing for now. I just have uploaded a thorough demo and review of this prototype to my channel, feel free to check it out!

It feels lighter because their is no battery. I also had that dream as a digital nomad turned expat. But the AR/MR glasses are gonna be what you want because of the size and the weight. Immersed is coming out with exactly what you need. It's going to be $1k and the same screens as the AVP. If you really want to game on it though then the Bigscreen Vr is the choice. This is going to be more of a PCVR headset. Right now you can already get multiple screens on almost every device. The main question now is.. Steam support or not?

PPI does not make any sense as a metric for VR displays. Its going through optics anyway. What you need to talk about it PPD, pixels per degree and also Field of View
Still waiting for something that can give the spatial computing like the Apple but wears easier. I have the Rokid glasses and its nothing more than a wearing screen. It's AR and spatial environment is not usable for productivity

Two 4K displays will drain the battery on this really quickly but if it has pass through charging where it can draw directly from the wall once the charge % reaches 85-90% I'm sold.

its more like 6k instead of 8k, bcuz its "8k" is two 4k screen while 8k is actually 4 4k resolution
that's not the definition of 8K. xK defines the horizontal resolution independent from the vertikal, so 4K is widely used for 3840 × 2160 Pixel, whereas 4096 × 2160 is called DCI 4K. 4096 x 4096 is also called 4K (squared) and 8K is commonly used for 7680 x 3840 pixels. It's not logical, i know, since it does not define the total amount of pixels, but it is what it is.
I'd be happy with this even if it just did 3D movies and flat PC gaming.

I don't know what makes an XR headset a "spacial computer" but this headset doesn't do anything the existing popular Android headset doesn't? It's higher end with a slick design for sure, but genuinely I don't know what part of the software/hardware makes the distinction, since I thought it was just Apple marketing reinventing the wheel as usual.
Windows can stay in place relative to real world. Like I can have a window on one wall and even if I move my body and head that window stays there. Most android headsets cannot.
the problem of VR is not hardware, you can beat apple in hardware but issue is software and that what makes Vision Pro great and benchmark its just Vision OS miles ahead with anything else.

Apple is using the best hardware in their headset available right now so I disagree . As to the software yes Apple is ahead but android will catch up just like on phones. Especially if other companies like Samsung Sony and Goggle join in.

The difference is software, it's exactly the difference between Varjo XR-4 and Vision Pro, one hardware is beating the latter while software is alot worse so the experience feels as if Hardware is worse.

Vision Pro may not be comfortable but it still looks better visually outside and inside we can see the flaws in the live video you made

Its good but meta has a great OS with great game catalog. This device seems to only have good hardware.

I want this to succeed to give apple the slap to reality they deserve for thinking $3500 was a fine price point to release at. They’re laying in the grave they dug with the poor AVP sales and recent reports that they are halting a lot of development plans for Vision Pro in general. The heaviness due to unnecessary components like metal, glass, and that stupid outer screen show that they didn’t focus on the user comfort and price point enough. And im someone that lives deep in the apple ecosystem
