Louis XIV, King of France from 1638 to 1715, ruled over the court at Versailles with the sheer magnetism of his personality. All were desperate to be in the light of the sun king. His image was paramount to maintaining his place at the center of the Universe. The 5’4” monarch wore high heels and voluminous wigs. And he made sure the world knew he was a virile man with plenty of mistresses. While at least 20 women came and went from his majesty’s bed, he was emotionally devoted to 3 women in succession; Louise de La Vallière, Madame de Montespan and finally Madame de Maintenon whom he secretly married after the death of his Queen. I agree with you but it’s important to remember, this time was very different to today, there was little to no love matches and a lot of the time it was arranged marriages by their parents, most couples within the noble court had affairs, when Louis the 16th didn’t have a mistress it backfired massively and thus Marie Antoinette was hated, all the hate on the mistress that usually happened landed on the monarch and thus the revolution
Also everyone in the court had affairs, it’s recorded a husband catches his wife in bed with her lover and he apologises to her for arriving early and catching them in the act and embarrassing her- it’s just how it was

Not really the case. The House of Bourbon was far from incestuous, all things considered. The Habsburgs model did not apply in France.
Obviously, there were a few first and second cousins marriages here and there (before Louis XIV), but plenty of marriages with foreign princesses and princes to help renew the DNA.
The Bourbon branch looks pretty healthy, as far as royal trees go.

@@visenyatargaryen9130 Aye and there were 1-2 other Habsburgs who came into the Bourbon line like that, but the line itself (the Bourbons) wasn't incestuous and their family tree doesn't make a circle (which is funny but makes no sense) is what I was replying to. The Bourbons didn't marry between uncles and nieces.
I obviously didn't say that their line was a perfectly healthy one; just that as far as royal lines went, they were pretty okay. Things get a bit more iffy as time goes by, but Anne of Austria was the first Habsburg to join the royal Bourbon family at that point.
N.B: It is highly amusing to see a Targaryen discussing incestuous family trees, though. It's good to see experts being brought in.
Maintenon was one hell of a woman for sure. The fact that she treated the queen with respect (enough to be given a ring at her deathbed) and founded a school for impoverished girls to give them the education she never got is just amazing, understandable why the king didn't take any official Mistresses after her.

Louise did the right thing by leaving, scorning Montespan for her arrogant belief that Louise was so weak as to not want to leave so Montespan could continue to abuse and bully her. If anything, Montespan should have looked to Louise as a warning to what would eventually happen to her, but she didn't.
Louise certainly didn't do anything wrong, and she showed it by living her life as best she could even when she was dogged by guilt. She certainly lived a better life then Montespan by not making any enemies in court outside of simply being the mistress. She caused no scandals. All she wanted was Louis' love, but knew well enough to not cause trouble, even showing her regret towards the Queen.
The fact that Maintenon wasn't born into wealth and royalty probably gave her the wit and pragmatism to rise to power. What a cool lady. Even though I hate that the king pitted all these women against each other, I'm glad that she was the one who overcame in the end.
Like I don't know if age of consent was even a thing back then but the idea of a mother asking a 35 year old to "deflower" their 15 year old son is super disturbing to me

Established Titles is an iffy sponsorship. They've apparently told CZcamsrs the title Lord/Lady can be used on official documents when it cannot. It's the same as the "buying and naming a star after yourself" thing. No official entity would ever recognize it haha. Not to mention I've heard they're disliked by the locals in Scotland, can't remember why, I'd have to look it back up

Wow! That's the entire series of "Versailles" condensed into half and hour. I love your excellent use of the portraits to keep us on track (since there were so many). I think I will dream of jewels and huge drop pearls, along with flowing silks and hair. So much beauty for one man. Hardly seems fair...

As an Athénaïs I can testify that you finally said her name correctly (unlike that terrible Versailles series). The Montespan was awful but the most famous woman with my name. She was always the antagonist of all those French young adult novels set in Versailles for teenage girls.

Her letters make me cackle with laugher- such as her comments on her looks during a cold “a shat on carrot” and speaking about marriage and her giving birth

She was amazing and the only woman to have the metaphorical balls to turn her back on Louis XIV when he bribed her son into marrying his youngest daughter with Athenaïs. She slapped Philippe and didn't acknowledge Louis when he bowed to her.

I can’t imagine the stress of knowing your lover could casually cheat on you at any whim. That there are dozens of young ladies - hundreds including non-nobles - constantly throwing themselves at him. I had a friend who dated a famously attractive athlete and though she trusted him, they couldn’t go out in public without having women come up to them and basically proposition him as though she wasn’t sitting right there. They eventually broke up. 😞

Hey, I really enjoy your content and I think you are a really good creator so I should warn you. Don't work with established titles. These titles aren't really given to anyone and you don't really own anything, it's like buying a star. It doesn't actually give you any right to use the title. There wouldn't be anything wrong with it if they were transparent about it. Plus there is no information about how much money goes to planting trees vs to the pockets of company's owner. I almost bought it for my brother. It's a waste of money...

@@lizzybearstar1661 Sure, Established Titles are claiming to sell you a tiny plot of land in Scotland which gives you the right to call yourself a Lord or Lady as well as a digital certificate. And for only $30 extra, you can even get a printed certificate. To quote Daryl from The Office, “This is shenanigans, foolishness, Nerf-ball.”Unfortunately, acquiring a one square meter plot of land in some Scottish backwater isn’t enough to have a title of nobility bestowed upon you. Believe it or not, Scotland actually has a court dedicated to overseeing all issues of heraldry which covers things like specific coat of arms usage and titles.
It may seem silly, but the Scottish, and British for that matter, take this stuff really seriously. Anyway, it is known as The Court of the Lord Lyon and it ruled pretty emphatically that programs like Established Titles are not real.
The court found that titles, including Lady or Lord, aren’t really names, but instead a description of people living on specific estates. Anyone owning a souvenir land plot, apartment or other residential property have no right to use these titles.
As for that $49.95 you’re spending on land, well you’re not even getting that either. The Land Registration (Scotland) Act 2012 clearly states that souvenir plots can’t be registered with the Land Register of Scotland which means you don’t actually legally own the land. In fact, the plot you have “bought” can be sold to other people as well since it’s not registered.
Of course, Established Titles claims not to do this and fair play to them. But they are also trying to sell you something that has no real value so it does kind of feel like a scam.
Luckily, I was not one of his mistress for three reasons.
