People say love triangles don't happen IRL but ive been in two theater kid ones, both of them queer, one of them being a miraculous level of wtf bs, and this show lowkey perfectly captures that up until they added cheating into the mix
Oh I don't doubt that it does happen however due to the overuse of the love triangle is stories (especially teen related/orientated media) that people can get tired of them
i think people are just tired of them and also because they aren’t well written in most cases or needed in the story. But i will agree Queer friendship groups get MESSY when it comes to relationships sometimes.

i have SUCH mixed feelings about this show because i loved a solid... 70% percent of it, gina carried the show like atlas. HOWEVER, disneys first show with openly gay characters, who actually end up in unambiguous queer relationships... and 2.5/4 of them being cheaters PISSED ME OFF SO MUCH

As much as Disney markets itself as being open it's only to get money. They still have conservative values (unlike what the people who have used the word woke so much it's lost all meaning say as they just hate that Disney doesn't pander to them)
I wanted to be Sharpay as a kid so bad. I still do. She's a theater kid trying to protect the theater department which is clearly a safe place for gays look at her brother and the piano girl from jocks.

Hey! Band kid here! Band instructors can be bad, too! There was a NOTORIOUS band teacher at my high school who would basically verbally abuse his student. Dude had a massive fucking ego. He got a bunch of trophies and shit (for his massive ego) and would frequently flaunt his "success" at local competitions. I played the flute in middle school, and, not to brag, I was pretty good. So while I was still in middle school, I was allowed to join the high school Band during the summer. Which means I got to personally experience the verbal abuse. It got to a point (and a very quick one) where I quit. I vaguely remember him SCREAMING at me in front of my mom. I was SOBBING. That made me quit the flute entirely.
But wait, it gets better.
He was also the THEATRE TEACHER. He would also verbally abuse them, and he would also walk in to the girls locker room WHILE THEY WERE GETTING READY for rehearsals. He eventually got caught and was fired. He left town and nobody knows where he went.
Luckily for me, I went to a different high school, so I didn't have to deal with him.
He was one of the reasons I eventually quit school altogether.

Fun fact from an actor here! I actually auditioned for a role in this show, though I never received a callback. I have no idea what character it was for though, because the script was a fake one. I was given the role of supposedly Troy and Gabriella’s daughter, and the show was told to me originally as a sequel in the future with their kids. So even the actors, (at least the ones not already tied to Disney) thought that was the case too. It wasn’t until the show was released that I and even my manager knew what it was actually about. They were sneaky af. 😂

I only watched the first episode of this and back when it was new. I don't know how you just summarizing the show just gets me invested to the point that I'm now angry at season 4 for what it did that wasn't Ricky and Gina related. Like how did anyone in the writing room think giving Sebastian a happy ending after what he did was a good idea. He kisses someone else while in a relationship and now that person gets peer pressured into still continuing that relationship with him. Sickening on all fronts.
Last thing, is Big Red his....actual name? Like, I just thought it was a nickname he went by because he's ginger. Y'know what even if he does have a name, I don't wanna learn it. Big Red fits him too perfectly.
I really didnt like how they handled any of the cheating. Its the same thing for ashlyn for me. When the show was depicting her new relationship the entire time i was just like " where the hell is big red? Aren't you still dating him???" And i was shocked the show barely mentioned him until the end and ashlyn never talked of him. I feel like there is a trope that cheating is a "little less bad" if you're closeted and don't want to come out, which it obviously isn't.

I love how it’s just chaos with Ricky and Gina’s relationships in the first 3 seasons but the fourth one they were the healthiest relationship in the show.

Gina is so underrated she was so talented but everyone hated her in the beginning
i wouldn't say they hated her, they just feared her because she knew what she wanted and was going after it. Nobody really knew her since she was new, and she had her guards up until she gained a friend in Ricky.
You can see that through the first season she gets more involved with the other theater kids, and by episode 6 she was friendly with Kourtney, despite competing against Nini for half of the season. And obviously by the final episode she was good friends with Ashlyn too. Sorry for this rant lol
This is THEE definitive HSMTMTS retrospective! Great job on analyzing and understanding these character journeys a little more deeply. You even noticed that Nini and Gina are foils, which explains why Ricky and Gina are naturally drawn together while Ricky and Nini are growing to want (and need) different things! Ricky and Gina's overarching love story has so much intention and care behind it because the showrunner had a slowburn plan for them since the filming of 1x05.
I was so pleased that you appreciated the Rina flashback in 4x06, since I think it's misunderstood and underrated by too much of the fandom. Since S1, Ricky and Gina have been the ones to tie each other to theater and SLC/East High, respectively. Gina is the first one to make Ricky feel like he truly belonged on stage when she convinced him to stay in the show (1x02), confirming she really meant what she said in 1x05. Ricky is the first friend Gina had at East (and likely in years) and was the key to SLC feeling like a home for her to begin with (this is also why Ashlyn singing "Home" for her is SO brilliant, since she's emotionally separated from who made EHS home, but she undergoes the same emotional journey as Belle by the end of the song, choosing to persevere). The flashback scene in S4 reiterates these thematic meanings each of them has for the other, but it makes them even more direct from the start.

I love this show but you make some great points. I now hate Seb and want to rewatch Season 3 to see what's going on between Ricky and because now its giving me Ryan and Chad vibes. I haven't watched this but I keep hearing from fans that they either hate it or love it. You know it’s divisive when Caitlin Mckillop, one of the nicest CZcams critics, especially one reviewing Disney Channel or this show, is conflicted with this show.
I remember arguing with Kristen Maldonado about the show’s quality in the comments of one review video and that she believed seasons 1 and 3, at least by the third episode, are great and the real reason season 2 sucks is because they were struggling to do what they could in the middle of coshit 19.

I have a headcanon that is almost definitely untrue but I loved the first three seasons so this is the only way I can still watch the show: Big Red and Seb went to platonically visit the movies together and their lips accidentally brushed. The innocent way that seb was portrayed leads me to believe he considered this to be the absolute epitome of unfaithfulness despite no malicious intention. Big Red felt over the relationship and decided to break up with Ashlynn but first wanted to see how being back with her would feel. Seb then spent the summer simmering in his guilt. This barely fixes anything, the writing of big red is beyond redemption, but it is the only way I can still support the cute relationships of Seb and Carlos and Ashlynn and Maddox( I am extremely desperate for any queer representation)

Okay, im going to share a story, but Im going to preface that Im not sure if it's true or a rumor or a bit of both.
At the beginning of this school year, our drama and choir teachers weren't there. Nobody knew why, and the few who did know were tight-lipped. For a couple of months, people had ideas as to what might've happened but nothing concrete. Then, one day at a Thespian Troupe meeting, we get told that the drama teacher has retired. This clearly wasn't planned because she was supposed to teach some classes with the middle school choir teacher (she returned after the second semester). She also had planned to retire next school year so we were confused.
So i sit with some friends after this announcement, and one of my friends tells me the story that I think most people believe at this point. Basically, our Choir teacher was being a creep and providing drinks to 18yos who had newly graduated during either parties or at bars (i personally cant remember.) I share all of this because the ex-choir teacher had chosen to retry high school musical to "reclaim what was lost" when covid interrupted that show. The thing is, the freshmen from that school year graduated last year, so there was no point. Most of the theater kids who usually do the shows did not do this one because nobody wanted to do it. We also weren't allowed to change the musical despite the guy who chose the damn thing, not even being there.
I jumped up out of my seat, grew wings and flew to mars, kidnapped a martian, brought it back to earth with me, and forced it to watch this video with me as soon as I saw the notification for this video.

You know what I hate is how this show and a multitude of Disney shows demonstrate the narrative that long distance breaks people up (HSMTMTS, Austin & Ally, Good Luck Charlie (Spencer deserves unhappiness though), but the one Disney Channel show where the people going long distance are actually endgame is DIGGY AND MADDIE, aka the worst ship ever in the history of Disney channel. Although I will say that Jack and Kim are probably the best disney couple and they actually did make long-distance work so you know what, Disney XD knows where it's at.
Season 4 was my least favorite too.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Emmy, or the "I wouldn't change a thing" scene from Season 3. Emmy had some very nice moments, like the songs "This Is Me" and "Dreams Don't Die", and "I wouldn't change a thing" was a nice moment to establish Maddox and Jet fixing their relationship, while also being Seb and Carlos' last nice moment before Season 4 brought it all down to hell.
We need a fifth season to fix the characters and see their final semester before graduating High School.

I remember one day in a theater class I had in the eighth grade we were all sitting in the schools auditorium and the teacher had each of us talk about any deep-rooted issues we had. I didn't fully understand it so I said I didn't feel like going. Next thing I knew I was sitting in an auditorium full of classmates who were crying and pouring their trauma out while I was extremely uncomfortable. I think that was what caused me to leave the theater kid community.
Seeing you talk about how drama classes would do things like this and how it isn't uncommon felt kind of eye opening to me.

Also all the season 4 cringes throughout. My friend and I would watch hsmtmts together and we quit after season 3 but we did decide to watch the season 4 finale without watching any of the season besides it and we were so mad at how bad it got 😂

ngl as a huge OG HSM fan i was VERY skeptical about this show when it was first announced so i didnt watch it as it came out but then i gave it a shot and i actually surprisingly liked it! although not my favorite a lot of the music were bangers and i did enjoy a lot of different character interactions!

Sharpay was my role model for me as a kid. I never really cared for gabriella but i had to pretend i liked her because my classmates like gabriella and saw sharpay as a villain. So im really happy that people love sharpay as much as I do ❤
I haven't seen this show, but they got one of the actors to do like, a pop punk rendition of "Home" (from Beauty and the Beast) for the Disney Princess Remixed thing a few years ago. I actually loved it lol -- it sounds kind of ridiculous if you've heard the original, but it reminds me of Disneymania, which I enjoy a little ironically and a little unironically.

22:19 In my Sophomore year of high school, my English class had an assignment where you had to recite a monologue from a movie or something. One of the provided options that my teacher gave us was Mia Thermopolis's monologue towards the end of "The Princess Diaries." That's what I chose, and I personally avoid public speaking (at least I did at the time, I've actually gotten better at it), so I thought it would be perfect to do. So when I presented that monologue, I channeled my nervousness to accurately portray how Mia Thermopolis feels when she gives that speech cause she doesn't like public speaking. Anyway, when I received the feedback and grade that I got for that assignment, my teacher wrote that I was "a bit quiet and nervous at first" when that was the whole point of my performance. And I personally think that's what made my performance so great, because I gave an authentic portrayal of the scene.

As a theater rat myself, yeah, there is a reason it's called drama. My ex and I had to play a mom and dad after we broke up, and he stopped coming to practice.
I loved Seb and Carlos's relationship, I started shipping them immediately when they were dancing together, super disappointed in how their relationship was done in season 4.
