Benefits & Risks of Activated Charcoal to Whiten Teeth (Doctor's Advice)

- Using activated charcoal to whiten your teeth is the new craze! But does it actually whiten your teeth? What are the benefits of activated charcoal for teeth whitening? Are there any risks to using abrasive charcoal toothpaste? Dr. Nemeth answers these questions and more!
Dr. Nemeth thinks that if it whitens your teeth significantly it could possibly be very abrasive. No long term studies about what activated charcoal does in the mouth have been completed. It could cause the enamel on your teeth to erode away, and it is likely to cause notching, or thinning of the tooth.
It may also irritate the gums and cause the gum tissue to become red. Also if you have crowns, veneers, or fillings in your mouth you have to be very careful with ANY teeth whitening products.
The FDA spends lots of time clearing drugs and other toothpastes. This powder certainly hasn't been cleared to be used in the mouth in any way. We don't know the long term effects of #activatedcharcoal to #whitenteeth , so Dr. Nemeth advises that you be careful and use this teeth whitening technique sparingly!

I can agree with that I did buy some of my own but I don’t think I want to use it constantly
Sandra Bryant i dont think u should. I just got some activated charcoal capsules today. I will using this method only once to get ride of the faint yellow. If u have great oral hygiene and brush 3 times a day but still cant seem to get that faint yellow to go away, do this method once
Sandra Bryant yes don’t use it! i have been using it for 2 days already and the day after i put it on my gums were aching bad bad
@@aaliyahh_6515 that means you have sensitive teeth. Sensitive teeth are caused by fluoride toothpaste and glycerin and sulfates propylene glycol and other chemicals inside of commercial toothpaste. You have to rid your teeth from those things to not have any sensitivity. Also activated charcoal detoxifies....your teeth are getting rid of toxins and bad bacteria. Your teeth aching is your bodies way of wanting more activated charcoal and minerals. Teeth are made of minerals...they need minerals like calcium phosphorus etc....
@SS If everyone used charcoal majority of people would have no dental problems so dentists still wouldnt make money

Been using activated charcoal daily for years. Never had a cavity in my life. I floss every day. Mouthwash everyday. Per my dentist, my gums are perfect. No thinning of my enamel. Brush gently and don't swallow.
I just received a toothpaste made with activated charcoal coconut oil some salts and essential oils. Do you use conventional mouthwash? I need tips because I'm a little nervous
What kind o charcoal & mouthwash do you use?
@jubjub247 lmao bleach really...
Years? How long?
@@sampokemppainen3041 Activated Charcoal will not thin your enamel. Lmao. It works by adsorption not abrasive scrubbing. It's just a scare tactic Dentists use to get you to keep using fluoride toothpaste so they can keep on drilling... 🙄

Thanks Dr. Nemeth, this is great info!!

Sounds like dentists don't really know; still speculating about charcoal.
Really honest and thoughtful input. Your review really helped me because I was having some swelling in my gums because of charcoal toothbrush. Thank you so much Doc
Thank you for the video! I like your way of explaining things and talking to the camera, you make it educational but not boring, good job 😁
Just don't brush your teeth at this point
Great video, honest advice. Thank you
i use charcoal regularly. You need some experience with this, so here is mine - i agree with the doc here that it is abrasive - likely very. what i recommend is brush with regular toothpaste, then floss, then combine AC (activated charcoal) with clove oil on different toothbrush - apply it to all teeth, but DO NOT scrub. Just let chemical action alone do it's cleaning/whitening/antibacterial for 3-5 min (watch TV..), then spit/rinse. i've had 3-5mm gum pockets for many years - requiring repeating deep dental cleaning, and 3-month checkups. Since i started using AC/oil, my pockets are 1-3mm and have white teeth with no stains, and the hygenist has to search hard for anything to clean. Doc says excellent hygene - keep it up, and come back in 6 months for cleaning (just in case..).
I only do this AC/oil ~4X/week, at night. mouth feels very fresh in morning. never any bad breath.
Yes, i do worry that even chemical action could erode enamel. i think this would be easy to test by long-term exposure on tooth that has fallen out - i will ask my neice if she has one (baby tooth) for that.
I'm a mech engr. I practice/try many home remedies - some have helped me with various things, others not for my case.
Jim Tebelskis Updates please
I'm curious why clove oil? Is it possible that the benefits are from the oil rather than the charcoal?
clove oil is antibacterial and helps numb sensitive nerves. It has a burning sensation when using it - just use 3-4 drops. it tastes good - like cinnamon. i think i heard that Indian people use it for oral hygene (i'm guessing for when toothpaste is not available). i have a friend using it for purpose of deadening nerves and he says it's effective. i use the charcoal for whitening, but because it is so chemically agressive, i think it may help with hygene too - mouth feels chemically clean next morning - really refreshing. i expect the clove oil tie's-up some of the chemical reactivity of the charcoal, thereby reducing it's effectiveness slightly, but i'm getting such great results that it doesn't need to be improved (ie: by alternating instead of combining these). My only concern is whether the charcoal weakens enamel at all - i haven't started the test of long-term exposure on fallen out tooth (from someone else) yet. i asked my dentist to look carefully for anything bad, but he just says it looks great and to keep it up.
For alternate oils, i only have limited experience with oregano and grapeseed extract oils. oregano is too strong-tasting to be tolerable, and grapeseed is probably too weak as antibacterial - i like a few drops of that one in my drinking water for nice citrus taste.
i don't think clove oil by itself will have any effect on whitening - it's only for bacterial and sensitivity reductions.
@@jimtebelskis3066 what brand charcoal do you use? and would i get results using just the charcoal without the oil or?
Dr.Nemeth, this video was incredible and thorough and most surprisingly HONEST to the core! I hope the rest of the medical community takes note. THIS is the frontier of honest and successful marketing! Three cheers to you and your association.
Who's watching this while brushing their teeth with activated charcoal? 😂
Does it cause sensitive
Why were you watching this and brushing your teeth?
@@oscarbrieva5362 no. Most people already have sensitive teeth from fluoride toothpaste and harsh detergents in them. Activated charcoal will actually help the sensitivity if you have it. I recommend a toothpaste containing the charcoal like My magic mud brand. Dont use the Hello brand. It has glycerin in it which prevents your teeth from being able to remineralize because it coats it. Always choose a fluoride free toothpaste with activated charcoal in it. So dont use Colgate
@@guitarhero760 thankss bro
@@oscarbrieva5362 dont use the food grade activated charcoal the one that is used for digestion. Use activated charcoal by my magic mud. It is for teeth and is very low abrasive it has been lab tested it will not make your teeth sensitive. Brush gently with a soft bristled toothbrush

Good straight forward info...
What a good video! Thank you for being so academically and professionally honest.
This is the first dentist on CZcams that is actually honest instead of telling you not to use anything except stuff you can only have done at the dentist office. Thank you! I've used the activated charcoal and it didn't work at all. I'm going to say this and I don't know if anyone will read this or not but I'm a teeth person. I'm absolutely obsessed with white beautiful teeth. I know some people are into eyes or other features but not me I judge a person's beauty on the way they take care of their teeth. I've always said that if a person is too lazy to take care of their teeth then they are probably lacking in all aspects of their appearance. I'm 45 and I smoke. My teeth really get yellow quickly because of it. The only over the counter products that have ever whitened my teeth are Crest white strips and this stuff I bought at rite aid that comes with a light. I've only ever seen it at rite aid but I forget the name of it. It worked even faster than crest white strips and it's cheaper and lasts longer.
I'm so happy to hear that you're enjoying my videos Amanda! The Crest strips certainly do a good job for most people. I found that opalescence does a good job as well. Thx for sharing.
What kind of toothpaste do you like?
Are crest white strips worth it? I’ve never had real white teeth but I don’t drink, smoke, drink fizzy drinks at all maybe I’d have a fizzy drink once every few weeks but my teeth are still pretty yellow but not crazy yellow really thinking of getting the crest white strips
True!

Great video, doc. I have also been told by professionals in the field that "staining" of the teeth is layers down, and the only way to remove it and make the teeth whiter quickly is to strip away enamel. There's just no other way (I think that's the idea behind UV is to be ableto acomplish this).
The UV light definitely penetrates deeper than the over the counter teeth whitening kits.
TLDR; use it, just be careful, especially if you plan on using it every day as there havent been enough studies to show it's long term effects.
The studies have been people years ago like the Egyptians and greeks used charcoal to brush their teeth and they were fine they had all their teeth and teeth were white and no signs of thinning enamel ....

thank you for the openness and honesty about not using toothpaste. For many years, I have mostly brushed with fresh water and a "hard" toothbrush, adding toothpaste {*recenely the same brand shown in this video} only 1-2 times weekly .... and my teeth and gums seem totally normal.

I'm VERY happy I stumbled across this video. I received a charcoal tooth powder in a monthly cosmetic subscription box and have been using it regularly (once a day with charcoal powder and once a day brushing with regular toothpaste). I drink a LOT of tea which has stained my teeth REALLY bad over the years. In the past month, since I've been using the charcoal powder my teeth have gotten significantly whiter and all of the stains have gone away, but now I'm EXTREMELY scared I've damaged my teeth 😭 I've been blessed with relatively good teeth. They're straight, I've only had 2 small fillings in my 35 years of existence. But I'm not using the charcoal powder anymore. I'd rather have slight staining on my teeth than mess up the enamel and have problems down the road. It's just REALLY sad that today's "standard of beauty" has such an impact on people that they would actually do harm to themselves in the long run to look "socially acceptable" now (sadly me being one of those people 😭). But this video was a HUGE wakeup call. Thank you SO much for this. I wish I lived in your area so you could be my dentist 😂😂❤
Thank you so much for the amazing comment! I'm so glad that my video has helped you.
Remember to keep your mouth healthy!

thank you so so very much for an honest video on this subject. ive used it myself and the results are very minimal. i think that youtubers and instagram models ect are probably sponsered to do these vids, that or they naturally have white teeth and its a sort of placebo effect. the risks involved are just not worth it. i really thought it would be the answer to all my teethy prayers, but sadly not. that said, i think its ok to use maybe once or a maximum of twice per week, that way you get a little brighter teeth, without the risks of damaging them too much.

Thanks you for the information and insights. I'm wondering about the Burst electric toothbrush, which is all over CZcams these days. It has charcoal-infused bristles but they're said to be extremely soft. Could the softness mitigate or undo the abrasive qualities of the activated charcoal?

It’s nice for you to inform me that the toothpaste that my dentists have been pushing on me my entire life is the cause of the issues I have with my teeth. I appreciate it. I’ve wondered why I’ve taken such good care of my teeth for the past 60 years and now have indentations near my gum lines. Aside from that, I have been using charcoal tooth tablets for the past 6 months and they haven’t had any direct negative impact so far. They contain Xylitol instead of fluoride, which is a major plus in my book. Ongoing usage will really be the test. Thank you for your informative video.
are you alive? Just checking on old people
The issue you mentioned is not likely caused by activated charcoal. More likely there daily of using toothbrushes with bristles which aren’t soft enough, or just brushing too aggressively. There may also be other chemicals and even abrasives in the toothpaste you’ve been using, which might be responsible.
That said, some degradation of dental health at age sixty may simply be the result of age, genetics, long term diet, etc..
It sounds like your teeth are actually quite healthy for your age though, and if it weren’t for the activated charcoal in your toothpaste, your teeth may have been in even worse shape by now.
It’s actually ridiculous, based on this video of a doctor saying “we don’t know,” to then conclude that the activated charcoal in the toothpaste you’ve used for most of your life, must be the cause of some minor development at an advanced age. Ridiculous…
I just spent 7 dollars on a small tube of Hempseed and Activated Charcoal from one of the brands featured in this video.
Now I'm questioning my motives.
You can definitely use activated charcoal! I would just recommend that you use it in moderation.

Thank you Doctor! I am stopping to use the Black Pearl powder. It actually whitened the crown veneers believe or not. But I am afraid of the abrasive products added to the charcoal
Just make sure you use it in moderation! Hope it works for you.
Great video! Quick question, how many times do you or your voice reminds people of Christofer Walken? 😄
I get that pretty often actually 😅
Dr. Nemeth what your opinion about baking soda toothpastes?
What do you think about using the charcoal occasionally? I just got some by Blk Diamond, used it once for 2 min and it worked great, my teeth are already lighter, and it didn’t bother my gums. I have extremely sensitive teeth and gums and normal tooth paste bothers it more than the charcoal. It says to use 3 times a week for 5 min or once a day for 2 min, what do YOU think about maybe once a week for a couple min?
I only use charcoal toothpaste about twice a week to prevent any significant harm to my teeth and it’s still been helping
Have you seen your teeth get whiter
