  • In this video I offer my thoughts on strengths and weaknesses of Rugers GP100 in 44spl. As a cast bullet shooter, handloader and/or caster, you like to know a few specifics before comiting to any firearm. I hope this review will be helpful for your pursuits. The .44 SPL is one of those underrated rounds.

The 44 Special is a great round and your right on about the forcing cones on the Ruger. I also have a SRH in 454 Casull and a 3" GP100 7 shot 357 along with 3 Sp101's in different calibers and a 50 year old 4" Security 6, I guess you could say I love Rugers but I chose the 357 over the 44 Spl for the forcing cone issue, S&W had major cracking problems in their K Frames. That Security 6 has digested many thousands of rounds of full power 357 and is still as tight as any of the others after all these years, they are just fantastic revolvers. I use my GP100 for EDC and have no problem with it. I did install a Wilson spring kit in it to drop the double action pull and it's a dream to shoot.

I read your post on the Ruger forum that you were going to make these videos. I really glad I came here. I've learned a lot and you've already solved a problem I had. Keep up the good work.

44 special offers more power at less pressure. I have a Charter 3" with self carved grips, something that most production guns can't match. Single action is no measure of a self defense firearm. Packability, grip, and size are more important.

Triggers can ONLY be as consistent as the placement of the finger on them. Measuring triggers with a silly little rod is not a solid way to guage.

@@leadsmith5873 my pleasure, truly! I’m rewatching this after getting the trade done and putting some rounds through this thing. Hands down the most accurate pistol I’ve ever owned! Been shooting some cast and coated 214gr moving slow at 800fps and will put 10 rounds in a 2 inch circle at 12 yards! Thanks again for the content looking forward to more!!

The Gp100 was modeled after the redhawk. That’s why there’s a lot of similarities. Great video showing the difference between them 👍🏻🇺🇸

@@leadsmith5873 I’m like that with 45 colt. I got dies and bullet molds for it that I got when my wife’s grandpa past. I just don’t have a gun yet that shoots it.

New subscriber to your channel. I'm new to hand loading and bullet casting and glad that I found your videos. I'm planning on watching them all! Question, what is that amazing looking rifle that is hanging on your wall?

Thanks for the views, the subscription and comment! You are my 200th subscriber! Thank you! The rifle is 1903 Springfield 30-06. It is a veteran of WW1. I am the care taker of the rifle. The true owner may want to keep it in his family. So, I gave it a home until that day comes. Until then (or if) I will proudly display it.

The gp has been great! I find it easy to carry when working around the homestead. I still love the caliber specific chambering. 44mag revolvers are great, but the weight tends to be excessive for standard pressure specials. As far as loads, it's hard to beat Bullseye for light loads with a Keith style swc. Red Dot is probably slightly better, I just haven't had a chance to try it in the gp100 yet. For hotter loads with the same bullet I found top end loadings of aa5 to be just about perfect. I've also found 2400 to do well for 2nd level loads, but the 3 in barrel limits things a bit. I haven't tried unique or too many other powders. Enjoy enjoy enjoy!!!! PS. I just turned 44. There really is something to that number!
