- Classical guitarist Michael Christian Durrant performs an extended arrangement of the solo guitar piece Embryonic Journey by Jorma Kaukonen, as heard on the seminal 1967 Jefferson Airplane album Surrealistic Pillow.
This arrangement incorporates Michael's own interpretation of Kaukonen's inspired music, representing an emotional musical homage to Michael's time in the city of San Francisco. This piece of music was made eternally famous by being used in the final scene of the hit TV show Friends. Recorded, directed and edited by Andrew Wong of AWSoy Productions.

Grew up in the City in the 70s and 80s. Couldn't have asked for a better childhood.
Really cool...totally appreciate your homage...I was born in Redwood city raised in Marin county...spent many days in SF (and nights) became a commercial fisherman and fished my way up the coast to AK where I met sweet wife...lost her last year, god I miss her...but I remember good times in the "City" as we called it...saw Jorma at the Rancho Nicasio must have been '76 ? Solo awesome.
The Rancho was awesome back then...the wild and wooly days🐏
This brought smiles. What could be better?
This is just what the doctor ordered this foggy morning. Thank you... just beautiful.
The short tunes are beautiful and they seem to stay with us forever
I'll wager that every so often Jorma enjoys listening to this
I am hoping that he has heard it!!
Such a beautiful ode to JORMA ! god bless
I hope someday I can come to San Francisco.
First time ever hearing this and it was incredible. The guitar is such an incredible and beautiful instrument. I wish I had kept learning it from when I was a kid.
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Remember, you can always pick up the guitar again and start afresh - today could be the first step on your new journey of inspiration, joy, and wonder. Never stop learning ❤️
First time I heard it was 1967 when Jorma Kaukonen performed it on Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow...which will always be the definitive performance for me. Oh and it's never too late to learn guitar.
beautiful
Beautiful. Takes me back to my college years in San Francisco... what a dream.
Bravo! Very nice treatment of one of many songs I always felt was too short.
Peace & Love in the World.
🌼✌🏻😃🌹🎶✨🕊✨🙌✨🌄✨🦅
BRAVO!
Ah beautiful song in the only place that feels like home
One of my favorite songs and by far my favorite city .I lived there 1968 -1976 , a great time for " The City " and a great time for the music that flourished there and probably the best years of my life. Well played brother .
Thanks for sharing, great to hear about your experiences of being in San Francisco during these magical years. Definitely my favourite city - there’s a warmth and love there that still resonates, even all these years on. A sense of adventure, and a feeling that everything is going to be OK... Peace to you, my friend ✨
Absolutely beautiful. Brilliant and true to the original.
Beautiful music. Beautiful place.
Really nice interpretation. Well played.
Love it! My grandparents lived in Belvedere/Tiburon. I've walked across, ridden across, and driven across that bridge many times. Never gets old. And I love guitar music!
Pretty music with good 'ol SF featured visually.
i've been to this place at the golden gate bridge and through out the city s.f. the photo and tunes are the best i also liked jorma's version on surrrelistic pilow awesome!!!! bob
My favourite Plane record ever! You, no words. Blinding!!!!!
I'm glad i visited San Francisco several times before the internet.
Wunderbar!
Love that city. And this video and music is amazing. Well done on this. 👍
I certainly needed to hear this rendition at this juncture in my life, thank you
Hi Matthew, glad that this piece of music provided you with some positive energy at this time in your life. M
Really beautiful!
simply beautiful
LOVE THIS!!!!
Well done. A great interpretation of one of the great short instruemental classics of all time.
i met this special person while working in los angeles... his dad had a private winery and vines in sebastapol. so he says to me, there's another world in northern california why don't we go up there and sure enough i found out about the russian river and the redwoods and many other places.... this is great but i am a body surfer from malibu and live in the southern part of the state.... bob
like the additional, highly spiritual, places you take us on the journey... well done.
still after six years i still come back to your rendition, that last piece of the song is so beautifully played it uplifts the spirit in times of need ❤😎👍🏻
Well I'm sure you realize that by doing this song in San Francisco, with the backdrop you have, that you've now brought that song full circle because that's where Jefferson Airplane started!!
I was thinking that same thing, and how Jorma might have been sitting right there when he wrote it.
pretty sure he knew that and that's why he did the video...
BEATIFUL BROTHER !
beautiful rendition!
Some people would say, "Jorma does a much better job", I think when a musician takes another musicians music and makes it their own, bravo.
Look at what Jimi Hendrix did to Like a Rolling Stone.
Michael has extended an elaborated on this beautiful piece.
This was excellent young man. I really enjoyed listening to your performance. Thanks for posting!
Exquisite phrasing!
Very nice! Most players rush playing Jorma's song but your speed is more soothing.
Thank you nice control- peace to you! Om chanti.
Very nice.
Used this in our wedding. So perfect! And a surprise treat for those fans of the TV show friends (it’s the song that plays at the end of the last episode)
I know I almost cried( and couldn't really believe it) when they played this at the end of "Friends" series. I've loved this song since Jefferson Airplane days, but also watched Friends, my age group perfect for both.. Hated to trivialize this absolutely amazing song from 1967 , but couldn't have been more perfect for the ending scene of that series!!😭
What a privilege to be part of your special day, Tim! 🙏✨ Many congratulations 🥂
Beautifully done.
Thank you 🙏
I come to this video every time I need to relax, hope someday I'll have the chance to meet San Francisco.
...and when you do, make sure to drive the Coastal Hwy1 from Carmel - Monterey North to at least Jenner.
@@SLAMTRON I will! Thank you for the recommendation.
@@EstebanRestrepo0 If you do, that day you will never forget
Привет прекрасно слушать
Beautiful
beautiful job
Beautiful, both your playing and the city.
And he's not too bad either!
The man !
WOW this came up under suggestions, and I guess CZcams knows I love this song! This is a wonderful cover of a song I don't hear enough. And I certainly have never ever heard a cover of it! Thank you Michael for brightening my quarantined morning >3
First time I heard Embryonic Journey on a classical guitar. Bravo!
I started playing classical guitar last year and will try tackling this one in small doses. I thoroughly enjoyed your playing. Thank you!
Fascinating!

Fantastic.
This is so nice
That's awesome dude!
Wowww nicee!
Thanks Natsupa! Great to hear that you enjoyed the video. M
Didn’t know Robert De Niro played guitar! He’s really good! 😎🤙🎸
He’s like a mix between Ryan gosling and Robert De Niro
@@1999rusteyDon't see Robert Deniro, but Ryan Gosling for sure.
nice...
Thanks Susan! M
Check out the "I love LA" bumper sticker on the guitar case. California is a groovy place.
Absolutely awesome! What was your tuning on this? Is it Drop D, or is your A string also tuned down. Glad you enjoyed the city of my birth.
Cheers
🍿
