- Every village. Almost every activity. Plus the luau, movie, and the Ha: Breath of Life night show. We did everything at the Polynesian Cultural Center and shared our full experience with you so you can decide if it's worth the price. (Spoiler: it is.)
We spent our first day in the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) and ended up going back a second day because there is far too much to do in one day. Honestly, we think this is one of the best things to do in Oahu. We visited all six villages (representing the islands of Hawaii, Fiji, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, and Aotearoa - New Zealand). We also ate at the luau, watched the Imax movie and the night show, and learned how to play the ukulele for free. It's all included with admission and we wanted to do it all.

First off, we were not sponsored for this video. We didn't even get a discount. We paid the full $120+ each for the Ali'i luau package (that was the price in 2018 when we went - it's currently $184 but gives you entry for three days instead of two). It was a lot of money and it took a lot of convincing for us to spend that much money. We wanted to make this video to show you everything that the PCC has to offer so you can decide if it's worth the money. For us, it was worth it without a doubt.
The most basic package (updated December 2022) is about $70. That doesn't include the luau and show or any food (you can eat at the marketplace in the center).

A few things you'll find in each village:
Samoa: Making fire from two sticks, weaving, and fire knife twirling
Hawaii: Hula dance practice and traditional Hawaiian games (konane and 'ulu maika)
Tahiti: Spear throwing and pole fishing, and how to make Tahitian coconut bread
Fiji: Using the derua (bamboo percussion instrument), getting temporary Fijian tattoos, making coconut oil, and chief's house
Aotearoa (New Zealand): The Haka (warrior dance), Titi torea (stick toss game), and Poi balls Tonga: Ma'ulu'ulu (Tongan seated dance) and Ta nafa (drum show - this is hysterical in real life)

Yes! We totally agree. This was a baby-moon trip for us, and we actually named our son Kai after the Hawaiian word for ocean. We can't wait to bring him there so he can experience it for himself.

My mother and I got to Oahu Dec 2018 to visit with my sister who just happened to live nearby and right across from the Temple. We spent an entire day at the PCC and it was the most fantastic thing we have ever seen. I honestly believe if anywhere in the world I would encourage anyone to visit, this would be the top of the list.

I always loved taking visitors to this beautiful place when living in Hawaii. The evening show is the best on the island IMHO, the Mormons sure know how to put on a terrific show.
We didn't have anything to compare it to, since it was the only show we saw, but I'm glad we seem to have picked a good one. How long did you live in Hawaii?

We visited the PCC in Aug '22. There was so much to experience. Unfortunately, we only had a half a day scheduled. Definitely not enough. We hope to return in '23. This one is on our list.
Yeah, that's the one downside of PCC - you need a lot of time to fully appreciate and enjoy it all. And that's not a luxury most people have when visiting Oahu. Hopefully you can get back again this year!

Loved it especially Tonga 🇹🇴 last remaining kingdom of polynesia who still to this day holds their culture more then any other island
I went there twice for a field trip in elementary. In 4th grade my bus broke down so I wasn't able to get home till 2am since it was an hour drive. No joke I fell asleep while the bus was being repaired, but they had to being another one(took about 2 hours) when I got home I threw up due to food poisoning. Went there during 6th grade and it was way more fun than my last field trip

Though I've never been here, I could imagine Heaven on Earth, and Hawaii is it! I've seen this Canal in 2, Elvis movies. Blue Hawaii, and Paradise Hawaiian Style. My 2 favorites! An Amazingly Beautiful Paradise!
Oh that's right! We meant to watch the movies when we got back. The Ukulele place had pictures of Elvis and other movies that were filmed at the PCC (5:35 in the video).

My two younger sisters and my cousins used to perform there. I really miss home. Now that I moved here in the mainland, I realized how I miss it so bad and always take advantage of it. I didn’t really wanna go to the center since I always go there when we friends from here visiting. Now, I really miss it sooooo bad.
I totally get you! I grew up in Alaska and there's a long volcano hike thats on a nearby island. I never went and didn't have a desire, but now that I live outside AK, I want to do it so bad! We stayed on the North Shore for three days and then down in Honolulu for three days, both in Airbnb's. On the North Shore, we stayed in a condo on Turtle Bay Resort's property (www.airbnb.com/rooms/13751844). We rented a car for the 3 days we were on the North Shore since public transportation is pretty sparse up there, so we didn't need to be picked up. Down in Honolulu, we used buses and that worked pretty well for us. -Brian

I really loved the PCC when I was in Hawaii, in fact I happened to run into an old friend, from my hometown, who was working at the PCC in the Hawaii section. What can I say, it's a small world.

Was there in 1972, wonderful experience. They still had the old stone outdoor theater where Elvis performed. Do they still have the Polynesian delights? A scooped out pineapple with ice cream and bananas and tropical fruits. Did you try the poi?
We didn't see the Polynesian delights, but that sounds delicious!! We'll have to look for it next time. We did eat the poi at the buffet. We're not big poi fans, so I couldn't tell you if it was good or not (we didn't care for it, but that wasn't a surprise). :) -Brian

We actually have been to New Zealand, but just for a 24-hour layover on our way to Australia. We explored Auckland and had a blast. We definitely want to go back and see more of the country though. And especially Milford Sound. What part do you live in?

No, the three day pass is only to the island villages. You have to do all the special things (tour, buffet, Ha, etc.) on the first day.

We did the "Exclusive Ali'i Luau Package." The luau/buffet is actually lunch. You've got two choices for lunch - "Gateway Buffet" is just the food and music, or the Ali'i Luau is the show we went to in the video. The HA: Breath of Life show is in the evening. And there's not an actual tour of the islands - you wander around wherever you'd like. They give you a schedule of the various shows and you make your own plan. -Brian

We were there last summer, but I'm just getting around to editing the videos. We were in Alaska for Christmas and Seattle for New Years, so we could definitely use some of this warmth right now. :) -Brian
Hey how are you doing guys. Quick question what package did you guys get? I just looked for tickets and a lot of the selections are sold out until September! I was wondering if its worth buying the other type of packages that are left over.
We did the "Exclusive Ali'i Luau Package." Honestly, I'd say whatever package you end up with is worth the cost. The islands are so interactive and fun, so that's worth $70 to play in all of those for a couple days (tickets are good for two days). Or if you're going in August, you can still get the Gateway Buffet package, which includes the buffet and entry to Ha: Breath of Life, and the two of those combined are worth the extra $70 you'd pay on top of the Islands package.
Who else here is also an anthropologist and had to read about this cultural center in countless papers during grad school? My sister is in Hawaii and I am telling she must go there... for my sake hahaha
Yeah, from what I've heard, they try to create a pretty genuine experience for each of the island cultures.

How long did you guys stay there each day? What time is the Ha show? We are planning to go but we are traveling with a 1year old baby and I'm trying to plan how long we need to be there and what time the main shows are.. Hopefully we can do as much as we can while we're there. :)
The villages are open from noon to 5:30, the Luau is at 4 or 6 (depending on your tickets - the 6pm is more expensive so we did the 4pm show), Ha starts at 7:30 and goes for 90 minutes. We were there from noon to 9pm the first day, then from 1:30 to 4:30pm the next day. So all in all, we spent 12 hours there. Yeah, it's worth it. We did a lot of things in Hawaii for the 4 or 5 days we were there on this trip, but to be honest, many of our fondest memories came from the experiences we had at the Polynesian Cultural Center. It's just so immersive and engaging you can't help but have fun.

if you could only go one day-- which islands should you go to first? great video btw!
If you could only go one day, you can still visit all the islands. You just won't have time to do all the activities. Get a schedule and make a plan for the top things on your list, since shows happen at different times throughout the day. The three shows I'd recommend are Tonga (so funny), Aotearoa (New Zealand - the Haka), and Fiji. For activities, we really liked the fire knife twirling in Samoa and honestly everything in Aotearoa. Be sure to watch the Canoe Pageant, since that gives you the opportunity to see all the dances from all the islands. Have fun!!

Yes! I visited the Polynesian Cultural Center back in 2013 when I did my first trip to Hawaii. loved every moment of it!
I get it - it's so hard to justify the price without experiencing it - it's a big unknown for people. That's why we made this video - we really wanted to help show people how valuable and amazing the experience is, so hopefully they'll be more ok spending that much money.

From your notes in the description, I am assuming you got the Ali'i Luau package. Which says the dining is @ 4pm with seating at 3:30. How does that work? Do they do the luau show for each seating or do the earlier seatings have to sit around & wait for the show that happens after the later times are seated? Yes, we bought the Ali'i luau package. Seating starts at 3:30 (which is when we got there so we could secure the best seats - they're first come, first served). The show starts at 4pm and goes for about an hour. Then they clear everyone out and they do a second luau and show at 6pm for the people who paid slightly more (the Ambassador packages). The night show, Ha, starts at at 7:30. Since the villages close at 6pm, this means you'll have to kill an hour and a half if you go to the earlier luau. That's why the later luau is a little more convenient - you can spend the whole day in the villages, then do the luau and eat after the villages close, then go straight to the Ha show. But that wasn't worth the extra $25 for us. -Brian

There are a few things to do during that time. The marketplace is still open, so you can shop and listen to the live music. You can take the tram over to the Mormon Temple and BYU Hawaii - the landscaping is beautiful and the visitor center is interesting. You can also leave, grab a bite to eat and watch sunset on the beach, and then come back for the show. -Brian

We did the Ali'i luau package and felt it was the best package for us.
There are several packages, which one do you recommend?
We recommend the Alii Luau package. I know it's a lot of money, but this gives you access to the luau which is (from what we've read) one of the best luaus in all of Hawaii. We really loved it - the food, the show, the ambiance, everything. The package has also changed a bit since we went. Now it includes 3 days access instead of 2, and you also get a canoe ride included, so that's cool.
I went here 1 week ago I loved it so I wanted to see it again. We bought the prime rib buffet not the luau
How was the prime rib? Did they do any show during your dinner or is it just like eating at a restaurant? -Brian

Did they have chicken or steak cuz I wanna go but I don't eat seafood or pork so the prices are kinda scary if I can't eat meat there
