      @Pk2723 Před 4 lety +66

      @holllllke123 That's incorrect. Let me explain it in simplest way I can. Picture earth. Earth is not a perfect sphere, it is kinda egg shaped, bulging out on the equator. This is because of the spin of the earth. The speed of the spin is not constant for all places on earth.
      Imagine a sphere. The closer you are to the poles, the less you have to travel to reach the same point after rotating once. If you are at the equator, you have to travel more. When the sphere completes a single rotation however, both places only have the same amount of time to travel different distances. What this waffle means is that the spin of the equator must be more than the spin of the poles.
      Honestly, there is no need to think about unrealistic things. We can actually figure out what will happen just from the things we observe in daily life. Case and point, weight.
      If you go to the equator and measure your weight, you'll find that you are actually lighter.
      We know that weight = mass x acceleration due to gravity(g)
      Mass will always be constant, so the only reason you weigh less is because g is actually less on the equator.
      The conclusion: If you rotate faster, the g acting on you will be less. this can mean two things. Either the earth is pulling you down with less force, or, something is acting upwards, pushing you away from the surface of the earth; a little something called the centrifugal force. This also explains that bulging out thing i mentioned earlier.
      Lemme also address the whole 'centrifugal force' doesn't exist thing that @Moses Darbster mentioned. Yes, there is no force actually pushing you away from earth. Centrifugal force is more of a phenomenon that occurs due to momentum rather than a force by itself. We just call it 'centrifugal force' because it is much easier to explain a force that pushes outwards than it is to explain how momentum is always preserved and the object in circular motion constantly tries to move in a straight line due to inertia to kids in 3rd grade.
      Consider a rock tied to the end of the rope. When you spin the rope above your head, the stone moves in a circular path. Easy enough to picture, right? When you spin it at moderate speeds, it doesnt feel that bad but as you spin it faster and faster, it tries to fly off from you hands. If you spin it faster still, it will try to escape from you hands even more. Now, let go. You will notice that the stone will fly off in a straight line with the same speed at which it was rotating when you held the rope.
      Imagine the spin of the earth is the spin of the stone. Your hand that holds on to the rope is gravity. What happens when the stone spins so fast that the force your hand can apply on the string is not enough to hold it back? Answer: It flies off in a straight line. Same happens with the earth. Even if the earth speeds up a few times, the entire shape of it would change. Water from the poles would move towards the equator, you'd weigh even less near the equator. But realistically, getting flung off the earth is the least of your worries. Before the earth even approached enough spin to throw you off, half the world would have drowned already. The half that lives near the equator, that is.
      Sorry for the wall of text, you probably don't even care. However, there are 3 likes on your comment which means that at least 2 people agree with you. I just wanted to make the correct information more easily accessible to those too lazy to google.

    For those curious about how gravity works in actual collisions, at some point with two objects with as much a disparity in mass the surface of one distorts and bends towards the other. This happens specifically because the proximity to each other’s core overpowers the pull each object’s center or core has on their respective surfaces.
    Universe sandbox can’t replicate this sort of interaction yet. If it ever does Gray might be due for a surprise....

    I think the reason earth was getting hot before colliding with mercury at the higher rotation speeds is because the atmosphere of earth was starting to interact with mercury first, and since the atmosphere was moving so fast the friction it experienced when hitting mercury was astronomical, causing a lot of heat before collision. And the reason there was no pre-collision burning from the light speed test was probably because the insane rotation speed flung the atmosphere out of the planet, so there was nothing to heat up before impact.
    Then again, the game is not 100% accurate to real world physics by ANY means... So idk.

    • @3pizza43
      @3pizza43 Před 5 lety +1

      i mean if your talking about tangential velocity no the earth rotates at over a thousand m/s.
      i assume you mean rotational velocity but in that case 9.8 m/s means nothing because rotational velocity is measured in angles, and uses radians/s not m/s

    • @extrascript6622

      Earth rotation speed at equator (surface) = 460 m/s

    • @T-minus-infinite
      @T-minus-infinite Před 5 lety

      Rotation m=causes constant acceleration because the direction is constantly changing therefore an object traveling in a circle at 9.8 m/s is accelerating at 9.8 m/s which is the force of gravity so exceeding that speed would overcome gravitational forces.

    • @T-minus-infinite
      @T-minus-infinite Před 4 lety

      Correction: The earth would have to rotate at a tangential equivalent of 18971599.81 m/s I think. If my calculations are correct, that is 2.112367982 rps.
