    @kendrixhavlik3051 Před 9 lety +219

    Creepy as hell.
    Also, brilliant performance by Colin. You can see the Sixth Doctor's usual vigor and confidence just shatter away, as much as he tries to summon it back up somehow, the angry motions of his mouth won't quite reach his eyes.
    He was always arguing with Peri, but whenever one of them was in danger the other would seriously freak out, so while Peri wasn't particularly spectacular in her description or acts, the Doctor probably valued her alot for being someone who liked him despite all his edgier bits, in a mutually tsundere-ish way. She was also a lot more useful than she is given credit for. Remember when she and the Doctor took out those guards in unison? When she saved him from that poison gas trap of the Rani's? When she held both the Rani and the Master at gunpoint (although they did, admittedly, escape her)
    You note the particulrity of the dynamic when Mel shows up and is basically your typical annoying but cute younger sister figure.
    Aaaand then, there's the Valeyard's surgically precise guilt-tripping here...

    • @DarthAzabrush
      @DarthAzabrush Před 3 lety +6

      Yeah JNT kind of buggered up the effectiveness of the Valeyard's guilt tripping with all that amalgamation guff. With the original Holmes/Saward ending the Valeyard just IS the Doctor, no "dark side" nonsense he's guilt tripping his younger self because he feels that guilt himself and wants to force the Doctor to stop all this larking around with lesser species nonsense and grow the fuck up.
      As for Mel I get the feeling he thought that picking up someone less likely to argue would be safer after Peri but he forgot that, much like Susan or Victoria, Mel's relatively dull and safe background makes her more likely to go looking for trouble.

      A lot of beings live longer than Time Lords. Krotons are pretty much literally indestructible including accidents. What they didn't want is primitive species getting access to that kind of technology and using it to rapidly evolve in the way they did because from the Minyan incident onwards they knew first hand that wasn't a path they wanted anyone to follow them on. The real evil of what is referred to as the Ravalox scandal was the playing ping pong with entire star systems for shits and giggles.

    People always look at the clip from Twin Dilemma of him strangling Peri in a post-regeneration fit and immediately think The Sixth Doctor's relationship with Peri is an abusive one, but if you watched more than just that 2 minutes of Colin's era, you'll know that they did get on (bickering notwithstanding) and this clip pretty much confirms that he did care about her a lot. As much as companions like Rose, Amy or Clara. The Doctor loved Peri just as much as any of them.

    OH YEAH! It's only the frickin brilliant Brian Blessed!
    Oh my God!!!! That must have been a pretty traumatising thing for children to see! I mean , it would have been bad enough seeing The Doctor's companion leaving the show but having this happen to a character that many children would have grown to like and would probably have been their favourite companion, must have been pretty shocking . I'd bet the BBC's switch boards were jammed that night with angry parents who were having to deal with an upset child cause The Doctor's assistant Peri had turned evil! I doubt that many companions had departed in such a traumatising way. Not even the death of Adric was that shocking! or at least not in such a horrible way.

    This is one of the reasons why Colin Baker's Doctor is so good this scene shows him at his best here and shows that despite his coat and his attitude at times he IS the Doctor. Another thing this scene does well is shows why you never cross the Doctor because up until this point in the story the Doctor was arrogantly and quite happily going along with this trial thinking he'll easily win now he has been shown Peri's death and that people have been used. He knows now just how serious the high council are and seeing what he saw flicked a switch inside him and made the Doctor angry and upset and no body dare make the Doctor angry and upset! Because well now he really is determined to clear his name and find those responsible and we all know what that means.

    Imo, the moment before this truly makes this one of the greatest moments in the entire history of Who - where we see 6 running as fast as he can to save Peri, you know he's gonna get there JUST in the knick of time...and then the TARDIS arrives behind him, he walks in, and is taken to the space station, leading back to the beginning...despite the massive cop-out later, the fact that the writing team even attempted such a brilliant subversion of a classic cliche makes it a truly amazing moment.

    The Master said that the Valeyard had twisted much of the evidence to hurt the Doctor's defense as much as possible. It had been established since The Mysterious Planet, because throughout the whole trial the Doctor had seen corruption and distortion of events. Still, it is a shame they didn't give her this ending, it's more tragic and has a greater emotional impact.

    Thinking about it, had Ycarnos not been suspended in time whilst the operation took place, Peri would have survived AND Crozier wouldn't have completed the experiment, an experiment the Time Lords later used Ycarnos to destroy when it was completed. Had Ycarnos not been held in stasis, the operation would have failed and Peri would have survived.
    So you can see why the Valeyard doctored the evidence from the Matrix; anyone with sense would have seen that Ycarnos could have interrupted the procedure in plenty of time, saving Peri and preventing a crime against nature. The only way to force the Doctor's compliance, or perhaps make him less rational when presenting further testimony, it had to be edited in such a way that made the situation hopeless.
