  • Dino’s Tinker Shed, S2 Ep56, Two year review of HWK’s motorcycle riding coat and pants.
In this episode, I will revisit HWK’s riding coat and pants and give you my thoughts on how they have stood up to two years of riding and weather or not I would buy these garments again.
I purchased both the coat and pants off amazon tow years before this video was made and put on about 10,000km on my DR650 wearing these in that time. They have seen blazing hot summer days, rainy fall rides and even a couple of off-road spills without complaint.
Overall, I really like these products and feel they are made as well as many, much more expensive products offered by more mainstream retailers.
I was made aware of one issue with the pants that I missed in my first review, and I talk about it in the video as well as what HWK had to say about it. If you need to contact HWK about any issue you are having, use the email address below.

I bought HWK pants last year and did a 2000km highway trip during a heatwave. Removing the water liner and opening every vent made enough airflow that I never felt like I was gonna overheat. I recommend these to anyone I hear is looking into motorcycling. My only complaint is the knee padding is quite stiff.

I've returned three jackets to them in past two weeks for all sorts of different manufacturing issues. Reinforcement around the zippers are nearly non-exist on the interior, found just a lot of misfires from their sewing machines and all have the armor padding was total garbage. Hell one of the pads I pulled out was starting to decay. Top it all off their sizing chart is way off so the first jacket I got was too big and also had a bunch of stitchings that was coming undone. I've wasted enough time with HWK so I'm spending the extra money and getting some better gear.

Thank you for the feedback. It is disappointing that you have not had the same experience as I have with my jacket which over all is still good for the price. I will need a new coat soon and may buy another HWK to see if they have dropped there quality in the three years since I bought the jacket I have now.

Hi Dino. I saw your first review on the gear and the product looked good. The second review is more detailed. The issues your raised from your use were worthwhile. The gear looks good with high visibility for the cost. Even expensive gear can leak water. You provided a good tip for enhancing the waterproofing of the coat. Customer service getting back to you - very good. All the best for the festive season and the New Year. Keep the videos coming- looking forward to snowmobile videos now the motorcycle is having a rest. All the best. Mal

Had my HWK jacket for a year now, and I've had ZERO issues with it. Love the removable liner, however, I have to agree about the pocket size. The jacket I have only has the two belly pockets and the left inner chest pocket. I can reach my inner pocket with the liner on though, so maybe that's something they changed since your purchase? Not sure.

1st off, kudos for the great review. Love your page. Lots of gd knowledge. 2nd, i just purchased the pants and jacket. The pants are extremely warm. The inner layer seems to be sewn on now. Couldnt find a way to remove for summer.solves the zipper issue i guess. As for the jacket, again the liner is the only thing that zips in/out. So if i remove the inner quilted liner,do i lose the waterproofness? The pockets do seem much bigger now as i can fit my fold5 in all pockets. Not sure if we get different options here in states but only adventure set i saw on website. Anyways, great video and look forward to more. Cheers!!

Love all of your content and valuable technical advice. To that end, I would like to recommend you look into Motoport riding gear. It addresses all of the short fall you do not like. Like a good helmet the gear is expensive. But factored over time etc, it is well worth the safety and comfort. I am not associated. I have been riding with Motoport since the 1990's. I have tried most other top shelf brands, but none come close to MP! The reason for this is MP is specifically designed for motorcycle use ( AND THE inherent dangers there-in) ! The other brands.... not so much. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

Dino, awesome review. I have two things to add. First one is that you most likely got a larger size pants, therefore they a sliding down. I'm actually on the opposite end. I returned a $300 plus Rev-It pants to the store because they kept sliding down and find myself going back to the $50 HWK pants because they never, ever slid down on my waist. Maybe you indeed got a size too large. On the waterproof lining, that is really strange. I just took a look at mine and it's indeed inside out. I never used it, since I have a pair or rain over pants and jacket and never bother about waterproof-ability of the other gear. I'll contact customer support. Who knows, maybe I'll use the waterproof liner one day and will need it's full functionality to be intact. Thanks for the head-up.

But for cruising at 100+Km/h for long periods with no flapping or buffetting or fatiguing... And peace of mind having a cows hide between you and the pavement....? 🤘

    • @DinosTinkerShed
      @DinosTinkerShed  Před rokem +2

I agree full leather has its advantages especially in the areas of protection and buffeting. Riding gear is such a personal thing, each type has pros and cons to its use and each rider has to make the choice at some point as to what is the right amount of protection vs comfort for them. Perhaps synthetic riding gear gives the rider a false sense of protection but I know when I rode with my two piece leather suit many years ago, I rode much more aggressively, thinking I was totally protected. Now I tend to ride much more defensively, slower and try to take less trafficked roads when I can (also the DR likes 80-100kmph not the 160-180kmph of some of my older bikes LOL).
Great comment Eric, thank you for posting it.

Outstanding review Dino - thank you. Based on your initial reviews, I purchased the identical jacket and pants. I love them, have no regrets, and would repeat the purchase. My pant liner has the same problem as yours. An issue that I've found with the pants is that I find the knee pads have a tendency to ride up and out; resultantly, leaving my knees unprotected. The pants seem to fit OK and are very comfortable. Have you had any issues with the knee pads?

As for the pants: How would they work as over-pants? I much prefer pants with belt loops as primary wear, but if I'm carrying a pair for rain pants, or to have motorcycle pants over my regular clothes for the crash protection, these have been on my "maybe" list.
Is the sizing accurate enough? If they're a bit over-sized, it'll help figure out what size to get to wear over my regular gear.

I have two pairs of the HWK Adventure riding pants (in silver) and really like the design and fit. However, the outside material (the silver portion) is terrible. On both sets it started to pull apart all over the rear and upper legs sections of the pants and also thread at the seams pulled apart both front and back. The pants are not tight at all but it seems my seat (an OEM KTM and later seat concepts asphalt gripper material) just rips the thread apart even after just one ride. I’ve had to patch them with iron-on mending fabric. No other pants I’ve used (such as blue jeans) have had this problem. I’d say if you are running a gripper type seat avoid these pants.

I do agree with you, however I also believe that spending additional money for a brand name is not providing additional protection if the garments are made from the same materials and assembled in a similar manor, a low price does not automatically make something cheep, sometimes it is just a good value. I do believe you really need leather for full protection and that is why you still see GP racers using leather and not synthetics. I have owned a few other coats, as have friends of mine, that were purchased form a major brand name manufacture that do not appear to provide any greater protection than this coat would. Again I am not saying that this coat would stand up as well as full race leathers or coats that are designed with significantly more internal or external armor on them. But I would not be looking at coats of that nature anyway.
Thank you for your comment, it is appreciated and a good point to think about.

Not at all, I respect all comments. I said right from the start there is better more costly equipment out there. one of my goals on the channel is to also provide people with options for more affordable gear. Your comment is more than valid. I apologize if I replied to directly.
Thank you again for the feedback.

Thank you for the comment, As I have said there are better coats on the market with better features but I have never understood the concept of paying more to a company for branding and name recognition. Again paying more for a feature rich coat may be worth paying more for but for the cost Instill think the coat is a good vallue.
Thank you again for the comment.
