- Join me for a walk around the centre of one of Yorkshire's favourite towns, Holmfirth! The home of the world's longest-running TV sitcom, Last of the Summer Wine, along with gorgeous scenery, centuries of history and a characterful community, this really is one of the county's loveliest places to visit!
As we walk around Holmfirth, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including Th'Owd Towser, Holy Trinity Church, Sid's Café (from Last of the Summer Wine), the River Holme, Victoria Park, Holmfirth Indoor Market, Holmfirth New Park, the Last of the Summer Wine Exhibition, Cosmo's House, Nora Batty's Steps, Hollowgate Bridge, the old Beast Market, Holmfirth Picturedrome, The Old Bridge Inn, The Owd Genn, the former home of Bamforth & Co. Productions, Holmside Gardens, Holmfirth Methodist Church, The Drill Hall, Holmfirth Civic Hall, The Postcard Pub, Albert Mills, Crown Bottom, and the old Station House.

As for some bonus information on the town, you'll be interested to know that the Bamforth & Co. postcards originally produced in Holmfirth have actually been banned from sale in places in Britain in the past - but make periodic revivals in seaside shops every now and then!

It is indeed the setting for the show - and Holmfirth really does a great job at tying its own history with one of its most famous pieces of culture - it's certainly a place of pilgrimage for fans of Last Of The Summer Wine!

Cheers from Canada's west coast. My late wife and I loved the show as did one of my grandsons, we used to tease each other about being like Compo. He said I'm like Compo because I'm always fooling around.
I visited many years ago to deliver furniture to a shop in the town, I believe it was called Jim Berry's or something very similar. We made the furniture in Suffolk and delivered to Holmfirth, this would have been around 1985. Great video thank you for posting.
Well it seems that Holmfirth leaves quite the lasting impact on all who come to visit, no matter for how long! And it's no wonder - it's a gorgeous town :)

Now then, Jim Berry was a local business man/antique dealer, situated just below where the railway station used to be before the "Beeching" cuts in mid sixties. Its a hairdressers now.
I have visited Holmfirth and never knew about those shortcuts

I should imagine Holmfirth like Brookside Close and Luss(where they filmed exterior shots of Take the High Road) gets thousands of people every day.I've been to Holmfirth myself back in '98,it is a lovely small town.

Good Video, we went on Saturday 29th April, and the weather was good and we had a lovely walk around, the shops inside are awesome, multi storey and really decent stuff, of course we had to go to Sids cafe for a cuppa and get our photos taken at Compo's but, yes lovely. well worth visiting.. A very interesting video, we watch a lot of Gimbal Walk TV especially of places we have visited, probably because of this You Tube suggestions marked your Holmfirth walk, I decided to watch as I worked just out of Holmfirth at Bottoms Mill from 1969 to 1999.
I was amazed that you managed to show many places I never knew existed, true I only went into Holmfirth to the bank and to shop for lunches, it wasn't a place I explored as I live 12 miles away in Kirkheaton.
I subscribed to your channel and found many more places I know or have visited including Castleford where my mother came from but haven't visited for 50 years, looking forward to working through them all.

I visited England in 1973 and 1975. My ONLY regret is that i was unaware of this wonderful comedy series and thus did not visit Holmfirth.

There's so much to do in Holmfirth! It may only be a small town, but with all its winding lanes and gorgeous vistas, you could spend hours walking around and discovering its riveting history :)

The townsfolk have clearly made an attempt to beautify the place, and make it attractive for residents and tourists alike, and it is a credit to many of those who have made an effort to achieve this. I was brought up in a relatively rough mining town not too far from here, distinctly lacking in beauty, and where my father's family was descended from, but my mother, having being brought up in Huddersfield, used to visit her foster-mother, an aunt, who had moved to Holmfirth. My memories of those visits are misty, but from what I recall, I am almost certain the place was close to where the residents of Last of the Summer Wine were filmed, as it looks very, very familiar. Although looking pretty from the outside, I seem to recall it was a little small, dingy and dark inside. We used to catch an old Burrows bus from Barnsley, I seem to think, a company who did a few scenic routes, for whatever reason, one being a circular around Wentworth, which was near to me, and which I adored. The Holmfirth run was lovely too, as we climbed up out of Barnsley into the hills and many fields, which seemed to excel in splendour, especially when you lived in the grey of a mining village, surrounded by pit stacks, and breathing in toxic gases and tons of soot, which polluted the air. On departing the bus, my heart always dropped a long way, as it pulled away, and I could visibly see the daunting sight of a monstrously long hill, and truth be told, I dreaded going there because of it. As a 3-6 year old infant, it was a colossal challenge, mentally and physically, especially in my Sunday best of the time, with sandals, grey or brown shorts, and a matching blazer, and cap, as my mother always ensured we were literally dressed for the church, which we sometimes attended. And I wonder, how do the young and old cope in places around these hills, such as the Himalayas, and the animals too. As a footnote, my mother was living in digs alone, when she met my father who was a welder come plumber back in the late 50's, they married, and she moved to South Yorkshire. Ironic and strange really back in those days, for the clash of cultures between Huddersfield and Barnsley, despite the short distance, was truly remarkable, and I have oft wondered how my mother coped, as she was a proper lady, and different to many of the women and men of Barnsley back then. Everything is changing though, and most places now are more cosmopolitan, as people move around for many reasons these days. There were few cars back then, and I was upset to see all the traffic going through town, which spoils such an idyllic, serene world, all be it a small one that is nestled amongst the Pennine hills of Yorkshire. Most of Last of the Summer Wine's town shots were filmed in Marsden, it's only really the Cafe and Nora and Compo's houses that are in Holmfirth.

As much as I enjoy these videos, especially about Holmfirth, it makes it harder to watch and read at the same time. May I make a suggestion? Perhaps an audio description would be a better option.

@@LetsWalkUK i hope someday this pandemic shit is over and i can travel to England for the first time in my life. there are so many things that i want to see. Museeums, churches, castles, Racetracks, old cars, planes, ships, narrowboats, steam locomotives, nice pubs , dark beer, and have full english breakfast. i am scared to drive with a car there for obvious reasons, because somebody drive the wrong side of the street. ;) i,d rather be carried around and look out of the window to capture this beautiful land and weather. yep i like rain and cold. I love how your videos are put together. Do you plan them out first with a script in mind or do you just get lost in the walk and then write the information afterwards?

Typically, I use local resources and base a walk around that. For example, this walk is based on Holmfirth's Windows of the Past Heritage Trail, with a few Summer Wine landmarks thrown in too.
I normally do a reccy walk to see how the town's story fits together - some places are easier to weave into a nice narrative than others, it's very much a lottery! Then I come back, do some extra research and learn more about the things I've filmed, and write it all out on the video! It's a really fun process - and I'm so glad to hear you enjoy watching the end results :)

I was born in Holmfirth and now live in Australia. I enjoyed seeing the videos of the town - with a huge BUT. Why on earth didn't you have the commentary recorded? It is so distracting, having to read the "subtitles" and we end up missing many details of the video.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - sadly there is no train station in Holmfirth any more, the old station house is the last landmark on our walk, but today the best way to get to the town is by bus from Huddersfield, about a 30 minute ride away :) I hope that helps - and thank you again for watching!
