    I don't think the anisotropy has anything to do with left/right vs. up/down. It's controls whether the diffusion happens in the direction of (isotropic) or perpendicular to (anisotropic) the gradient of the image (1st and 3rd order) or gradient of the high-order wavelet decomposition of the image (2nd and 4th order).
