Shout out to my fellow BMX CZcams friends - Kevin and Bernie at / @cruisinginthe808 and Brandon at / @bmx_dreaming . Their passion for BMX inspired my own journey and I hope they, and their wonderful channels, inspire you as well.
I am 50 yrs old now and still have the Hutch bear trap (or bear claws as we called them) scars on both of my shins!
I totally get why you’d call them bear claws… as I’m sure it looked like your shins were attacked by a bear. Long lasting battle scars. 👊
Take your time with the build video. I want to savor the process. It's going to be a beautiful bike!
Thanks for the input. I’m leaning this way. Still waiting for that stem. But super excited to be almost there!
I love your videos. Thank you for the great Contant.
Right on 👊 Thanks so much for watching and the encouraging feedback ❤️
I have a nice chunk of skin missing from my shin that needed 9 stitches to close. Interestingly enough, Bernie and I were on our way to a dirt jump in another town and on the way there from my house, we cut through the Salvation Army parking lot which had a nice pile of sod that made a makeshift jump for us bike guys. Weʻd jump it all the time as we cut through this lot. Anyway, we ran through one jump and it went well and I made the mistake of telling Bernie, "Letʻs do that one more time!" Well on the next go around, when I landed off the jump, I slipped the pedal and it swung back and took a nice sized chunk of skin off of my shin. It was all that white meat from a deep cut. I managed to pedal myself home with one leg while Bernie trailed. My mom had to come home and take me to the ER to get 9 stitches put in. On the upside, Telly Savalas from that TV show "Kojak" happened to be vacationing on the island at the time and went to the ER for some meds so I got a chance to meet him and shake his hand. I guess it wasnʻt so bad after all! Still got the scar today! Beautiful pedals and that Hutch is gonna look sick with them! Canʻt wait!
Holy cow, that’s such an epic story!!! 9 stitches 😱😱😱 Seems like it’s always the “one more” that gets us 🤣 Glad you at least had a silver lining in the story, that must have been pretty cool meeting Telly, and you even a souvenir scar to remember the occasion. Haha. 👊
Thats gonna look awesome completed.
👍
Thanks. I can’t wait. So close 👊
I could not afford the Hutch pedals back in the 80's so I had the Suntour XC-2's and we got some custom cages to make them like Hutch. They gripped with Vans shoes like crazy and I don't recall slipping as I think my shoe would've had to come off first! The ones I slipped were the skinny MKS rectangular metal pedals, but my favorite for freestyle were the MKS Grafight (you showed pic in this vid). They were all around my favorite since they gripped pretty well with shoes but would also be ridden barefoot which I occasionally did.
I hear you on not being able to afford them back in the day. Those pedals alone cost 1/3 of a decent bike from other brands 🤣 I love how you improvised to make your own version. I never had the grafights earlier, but as you said, I know they were a popular choice for a lot of freestylers, and they were going to be my second choice on this build. I still might pick up a pair to keep these more pristine.
I really can't wait to see this bike in its glory.. sweet channel bro. Love the content
Thanks so much for the positive feedback 👊👊👊 I can’t wait either 🤣 Still waiting on that stem!
I was Hutch through and through. But be damned if I was going to run a pair of those pedals. They scared the hell out of me. Honestly though, the best pedals ever bar none were Shimano DX. And they were scary enough. I'm 55 and still have the 35 year old scars down my shins from them. Will be a great build. Can't wait to see it.
I hear you. A lot of dudes were damned indeed from running them and also have some gnarly scars to show for it 🤣 Thanks for watching and commenting. Can’t wait to build it.
Enjoying the bmx vids just subscribed Cornwall england
Right on! Welcome to the neighborhood, and thanks so much for subscribing 👊
I bought a pair of those back in 2018 for my XL26 build with the titanium spindles. I also bought an extra pair of black cages with them. They were so nice when I got them that I didn't even wanna ruin them by putting them on 😂😂 But I'm glad I have them ❤
That’s so awesome! I feel the same way about these. I just got a 26”Hutch Hollywood, which is an X26 painted lavender with Hollywood stickers. I wasn’t expecting to love the XL26 as much as I do, but the geometry is so much better than my 26” GT Performer. I’ve got plastic pedals on it…
When I was growing up in the Mid School DK made a square set that I always looked at. Odyssey had the Triple Trap, and Primo had a platform pedal called The Tenderizer. Those were always on my wishlist.
Very cool. “The Tenderizer” seems like an appropriate name 🤣
This thing is going to be so cool! Glad to see more progress is getting made!
Thanks Sean. I can’t wait to get it assembled 👍
Good call on keeping the Trickstar casual. You got the Dagger for more aggressive stuff!
💯That was the plan when I built up the dagger. You got it 👊👊👊
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood Same reason I built up two sports! Keep the aqua blue one clean & the white one is for re-learning lawnmowers & tail whips!
I’m happy with SE Bikes Bear Trap pedals myself.
Yeah, those are a crazy good value at around $30 a set. 👊 If I didn’t get the Hutch pedals, I was deciding between the SE bear traps and the plastic Grafights.
I ran those pedals on all my bmx bikes in the 80's. Still have the scars to prove it! lol...
It's amazing how a pedal can bring back so many memories from the 80s. Legendary battle scars 👊
The Evil Alloy Square Crupi style pedals are pretty nice. Next level violence though. I caught one in the right calf and it left a perfect square of bleeding dots with a bruise in the middle. Still riding them.
Nice! I’ll have to check those out.
Thanks for another awesome video, they keep getting better. I just ordered a pair of blue SE bear trap pedals for my 26 inch Haro. They were 30 bucks.
I think my build budget may be smaller than yours, but i truly enjoy your videos. Please keep doing what you do.
P.S. Your skateboard hall of fame and Pee Wee road trip videos were awesome.
Thanks so much for the encouraging feedback. 🙏 The blue SE pedals on your 26” Haro sound great too. 👊
Man…cant wait to see that trick star when its done…gonna rule!
Right on Brad!!! I can’t wait either. By the way, I love watching your clips from behind the school (or whatever that building is) 👊
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood thanx…yeah its a elementary school….i love it there..no one ever comes back there!
one of my old BMX shops is EPIC BMX...(Loads of info.)
I’ve never been there, but I love their Instagram account and CZcams videos. 👍
I remember that pain so well !!! ..good job Matt 😊
Thanks Stuart. Yeah, it seems like getting at least couple of good shin bashes was a right of passage back in the day 🤣
For sure these "iconic" Hutch Bear Trap pedals are crazy expensive, but damn they look so good !!! 😍
Me, I bought the MKS XC-III silver pedals. Same "bear trap" shape, good quality and much cheaper …. 🇯🇵
I hope you will receive your Hutch stem very soon ! Can’t wait to see this Trick Star finally rolling …
Agreed! 💯 I was going to go with pedals like those for the reasons you stated, but I just couldn’t resist pulling the trigger on these. Partially just to keep myself excited about this build while we wait for what seems like forever on that stem. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and watching 👊
I always used kkt pedals and those would tear you up to
For sure!
I sold my knock off bear claws to a friend after one went an inch deep into the back of my leg. Was on a mongoose expert pro (even the stock ones were slightly dangerous).
Holy cow, that’s a MAJOR pedal gash 😱 Yikes!!! I don’t blame you for selling them after that. Hopefully your friend had better luck. 🤣
The Shimano DX’s that were my go to were bad enough…. Even when I had a trick star. I still have my well used UGP shin guards too.😮
🙌🙌🙌 Yeah, shin guards for the win 🤣
I remember the Crupi pedals leaving some wicked dents in my shins too!
I never rode a set of those, but dang, the points on those look equally as dangerous! 😬
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood I just rummaged around in my old bike stuff and found a brand new pair of Crupi round pedals! They are worth a mint now! I'm gonna put them on my 1986 Mongoose FS1. The bike was my sisters, I've kept it all these years on the wall, now I'm gonna bring it back to life for her daughter!
@@kjsinsaino Dude, this is amazing!!!! You’re gonna be uncle of the decade for this one. So cool 👊👊👊
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood That comment made my day bro!!!
@@kjsinsaino Awesome 😎
I was wondering when you were gonna do the build video and now i know why,the stem. At least they are a lil bit cheaper than skyway pedals that run at about $400 and $420 for chrome ones.
Ha, yeah that darn stem is driving me crazy. If I knew it would have taken this long, I would have just built up the bike with something else. Oh well, shouldn’t be much longer now. Yeah, those Skyways are beautiful, but make these seem like a deal 🤣
If i was selling a bike and got my money back .yes ..but on a personal bike I wouldn't spend the money to just cruise around.. i like the mks or kkt style pedal ..grippy and about 50 60 bucks
That makes a lot of sense. That was going to be my original approach, but against my better judgment, I pulled the trigger on these. I don’t really have a lot of other vices to waste my money on, so I guess I don’t feel too bad about it 🤣 I like those $50 mks style pedals to, probably the smarter choice 👍
Longer, more indepth video of the building process please.
Thanks for the input. That’s what I’m learning towards too.
Always wanted a bike with wheels like that. I did have the 'disk' wheel coverings though. Was that an 80's thing as well?
Skyway Tuff mag wheels! They still make them today. I think those wheel covers are lost in the past though. I had a Huffy Sigma bike in the mid 80’s that had those white wheel covers too.
i went potts mod on race stem but seems to be issue with lot of hutch guys tho..but snagged these there easy to make into freestyle ones.but i have plastic to ride
Yeah, some of those Hutch guys are sticklers for authenticity and cranky gate keepers. 🤣 Having a set of plastic ones for riding is a great idea 👊
Wow! I remember my friends and I couldn't afford those! Jeez those are nice. Hey did you ever set up your Hensley H-street?
I haven’t set up the Hensley just yet. Still riding the Steve Saiz. I’ll probably set up the Hensley in the spring 👍
@@TheNostalgicNeighborhood looking forward to see that!!
I found them too bulky for me, less aero. Look amazing tho
That’s understandable. Luckily, in that sense, my Trick Star will be more for casual riding. I have some plastic Odyssey Twisted pedals on my more “daily rider”, an S&M Dagger 👍
Lol...funny. I found a pair on a used USA specialized....Painful, had to sell them.
Yikes!!! 😬😂
and still no jdb stems uhh
I know. I’m not normally into conspiracy theories, but I gotta wonder what’s going on here with JDB. 🥸
