  • Ah, the Lancia Delta Integrale: a rally homologation special and all-weather supercar that is a hero to many of us of a certain age.
We've brought two of them together: first, an original car owned by Autocar's own deputy road test editor Richard Lane. It's a 1990 model with a few personal tweaks that make the car very special to Richard.
The second is a restomod by Maturo cars of the Netherlands. Maturo involves itself heavily in rallying and wanted to make the optimum Integrale for the road. And this is it. They do loads of work to the shell and the body and the engine and the suspension and the brakes and etc etc etc: it's massively re-engineered but fundamentally is still an Integrale.
Join Matt Prior and Richard Lane as they drive the two cars back-to-back and get under the skin of them both.
For more on the Maturo (and other restomods) you can subscribe to Autocar and its full near-130 year archive over at themagazineshop.com.
And find us over at autocar.co.uk

Great video guys. Having driven the original it’s difficult to see how it can be improved but everything can be enhanced. However, is there enough of a gap to make it worthwhile? If you have the money, I suppose so, but for the rest of us mere mortals I think many would be just pleased to be able to afford the standard car.

I did the dished wheel thing on a car years ago and it was so much better to drive, the problem is that the indicator stalk ends up miles away from the wheel !

Great video guys (poor mic audio notwithstanding oops). I've been really interested in the Maturo as the Integrale is one of my all time favourites (even though I've never driven one). For me, they are just the coolest thing to see in a motorsport circuit carpark. Nothing says petrolhead connoisseur quite like an Integrale imho. But I think they are clearly one of those cars that are of their time. I'm sure they don't handle like a CT9A Evo for example. But from what I've read, they do sparkle in certain ways that has never been eclipsed, like the steering feel and feedback like Richard points out. So the idea of the Maturo has confused me...is it close to the ultimate car?! Or is it a too expensive and unoriginal Integrale? From this brief drive it sounds like it is Integrale refined and with the focus turned up to 11. So not necessarily "better" than the original, but different and indulgent. Probably what a restomod should be in fact? As soon as Richard said it I knew it was the answer: "Someone who buys this already has an original evo in the garage." And in that way, it seems like a great idea. If I could, I would! Have both!
Also, much kudos to Richard for owning an Integrale!!!

They're the Eibach springs that Lancia fitted on some of the later Evo cars, so they are OEM in that sense. It's always a difficult trade-off. On a decent-ish surface they're brilliant, and even the standard springs don't like potholes etc. I alternate every so often.

Great video as usual! Although I should say the audio quality in the interior shots was a bit wasted like that weather. I'm a big Delta fan and though I love the Maturo, I just cannot fathom that price tag. You could essentially buy 4 Integrale Evos for that money and that's just too much imo. I'd rather buy a standard Evo and modify it lightly to my own liking and still be better off.

This is bittersweet as my favourite real world car of that era was the intergrale and then family commitments arrived as did safety of the passengers... A decade later a hastily driven evo was in front of me then I decided to see what it was made off in my Renaultsport Clio on brand new tyres and shocks and it was like Lewis vs Tyson. Never meet or outdrive your hero's 🤦‍♂️

@@jareknowak8712 8v has good torque, my old 8v had the same basic mods as my evo2. BWE chip, 1.2 bar boost, exhaust, FE springs, tarrox brakes etc, it was just as quick as the evo and more involving. I still prefer the evo but the 8v was a fantastic car.

Nice car but better in Lancia Lorde blue I think.
I love how you make comments about the good dash layout, driving position, sports wheel and special switches and then show less than 5 seconds of screen time of the interior and dash.
Now go back and look for yourselves rather than blindly lashing out at a criticism if you are looking to improve the viewer experience.
    Thanks for posting!

Lord blue IMO is the best colour. Some of the rarest specials came in Lord Blue, there was a reason for this. Although I also think Dealer Collection candy red was another great look with the cream leather.

I owned an Evo1 'grale for 9 years and whist it was a lovely car in many ways, being rare, pretty and very very italian, unfortunately it's simply impossibly to actually make them handle very well because
    1) (and this is the big one) the bodyshell has the torsional rigidity of a wet letuce
    2) all the mass is waay upfront
Because 1) means there is no practical way (in a road spec car, ie not an actual GrpA rally car with a full forrest plate set and full multipoint weld in cage) of getting the rear to actually carry its fair share of the cornering loads.
The Maturo obviously uses its additional roll cage to help out, but even then in modern terms it's still rather floppy, and of course even they can't fix the problem of all the mass being in the front....
I'd say just get a mint std Evo and drive that at 7/10ths as suggested by Richard 🙂

The integrale 8v is not a GT nor should you drive it like that! If you do not drive it with spirit there is no point, and out of the factory without any mods, if very well maintained, it should still drive on difficult roads with aplomb. I do not agree with the poly bushes or reworking the turbo or front bracing takes away balance in my opinion of all the parts, steering, ride, response tested for many hours by lancia engineers in development to work in balance.

@@mickpalmer3521 agreed....cars. even race road ferraris of the 1960s used to be cheap until the early 70S because they were just last generation second hand cars. Not until the capitalist investors viewed cars as investment assets did we have this ruination for genuine unrich car enthusiasts. A Lot of these integrales with six figure asking prices will just end up in a private multi car collection and ignored, purely for seeing if pricess will increase. pity

    • @CherylCold
      @CherylCold Před měsícem

@@cbca6567 You have to remember that the upkeep and restoration costs for integrales and many other cars is very expensive. They were also produced in very small numbers (especially evo2). I've just had an evo2 restored and its cost me 20k euros, and that was cheap in Eastern Europe. Parts are very hard to find and many people want to touch them. I've driven a lot of very nice cars over the years but there are only a few from this era which are very special. And the integrale is one of those.
