    Thank you! Finally someone with an intelligent and economical approach to building a small structure. Forget tiny homes on wheels and converted shipping containers, this is the real deal. The key ingredient here is they own the land, that is where the true value is! Save your money and buy a piece of land and then build a proper economical structure such as this. As you gain funds, you can add on and enlarge as needed ( Or not). Forget every other scheme you have seen, and follow the wisdom of this couple. I have over 50 years architectural design experience, and this is exactly what I would do!

      It is easy to see that you have Architectural training. You have refined a small structure down to it’s essence, and are keeping things simple. I have no doubt that the entire redevelopment of your plot of land will be wildly successful!
      P.S. I really like the OSB sheathing available to you, it is comprised of smaller flakes then in most parts of North America and ends up almost having the richness of real cork.

      Dito!
      A thing I am thinking about is:
      Build the steel floor and walls "first".
      Put two 45 degree stiffening beams in the floor per side. That way the plywood is stable at the ends of the cabin.
      That way the wood is not between the steel floor and walls. No moisture problems that can wick inside. If you have a water damage the wood cant compress and compromise the cabin. If you need to change the wood it's no problem.
      Great work and thank you for the motivation!

    Love watching this, I built a tiny house on a trailer out of steel stud/track about eight years ago, wish i had this information back then. It was such a learning process. The big reason I chose steel/track was because I was building in an off grid area, where I could only use battery powered tools. Ended up cutting the whole house with tin snips and battery screwing it all together. I decided not to keep the house as I needed to move properties, ended up dismantling it and am now reusing all of the steed for shelving in my business. It's fun to go into storage or a grow room and see all the markings I made with a sharpie, Steed studs are amazing for sheer strength if you unconventionally use them screwed flat side to flat side. It's unfortunate, I used to buy steel studs for $4.50 each 8' length, now it's $10 each. Still worth the price considering you can reuse them, and they will never go bad like wood, which here in the PNW will mold the second it's exposed to the weather.

    Great build! I like seeing people building their house like this, but to answer your video title's question, this is definitely not a container house killer. Containers provide orders of magnitude more rigidity and protection from high winds if properly anchored to the foundation. They are also easier to stack for 2 or even 3 story buildings without building reinforcements on the lower levels (This of course can change depending on how much of the walls you cut out, or if you build it with overhangs).

    • @markbrown3587
      @markbrown3587 Před 2 lety +2

      I agree. Cool video although nowhere as strong or portable and much more expensive than a shipping container which comes assembled with a roof and walls at about $2,000 used, can be stacked 9 high when full, and are highly carosian resistant.

    • @colinstace1758
      @colinstace1758 Před 2 lety +3

      There are also drawbacks to container homes, transport costs, site access, condensation if you don't insulate properly, you still need a roof over them because they are flat, special equipment needed (welder, plasma cutter, grinder, etc) special anti rust paint, the list goes on and on.

I said I'm doing a repair, this isn't new work and he says well, I'll let it go this time but if you take sheathing off and expose the insulation we'd like you to get a permit.

It needs lots of work so it won't be available until a few weeks from now!
      About building similar per hire, we haven't actually considered it seriously yet but to be honest it would be fantastic to build a couple more for some like minded people (that care about design and well done products same as we do!) So yes, we are open to it :)

    Just found this video and your channel! Love what you are doing! Not only are your financial reasons for this particular build smart, but the design and “product” are aesthetically pleasing. Anyone could build a crappy cabin for cheap, but you’ve built an efficient, structurally sound cabin that is very visually appealing . That takes it from “just a cabin build”, to capital “A” architecture. Well done!

      @ModernHouseCabin  Před 3 lety

      yes, not very happy with that myself either. Could not find a way to install a polyethylene membrane under the OSB and on top of the raised platform. We tried with two different ones but the wind ripped them off before we could install the OSB... one of them was really thick but still no luck. (not shown in the videos, since we were not able to actually do it, and we wanted to keep it honest and real, we could have shown the clip where it was being installed and this question would not have been made)
      Looking back many ideas come now to mind of how it could be done. But all of them required time to wait ordering online, all the stores were closed during those crazy months... We needed to move forward, we really needed the Cabin to be functional ASAP to have some shelter. OSB is actually a VERY good vapor barrier itself as you might know, but having an actual membrane would have been the way to go... 😟 looking forward sharing more progress next Thursday, have a great weekend Mike! 🔥🖤

    You'd never get away with this in The Totalitarian States of America.

    • @ekurdesov
      @ekurdesov Před 2 lety +1

      Why? Many states don't have permits nor inspections. I just bought a Land 2hr north of Minneapolis, The only permit they got here is for electricity and sewer.
      It all depends where you build, also stop for a moment and realize that today in America no builder gives you a warranty for a brand new house :)

  • @sciencesaves

    it took you 2 weeks to build something. a container is already built. this type of structure will never kill the container

    • @brianmi40
      @brianmi40 Před 3 lety +1

      Who said "kill"? -- as he exactly said, it's an alternative that provides more flexibility in shape, including clearly here, a loft space, which you don't get with a container. And container's "already built" don't have windows or a normal entry door so there is clearly time required with them also just to cut an opening for them.
      You also weren't paying attention, it wasn't TWO WEEKS, it wasn't even the 10 DAYS TOTAL HE STATED. It was 5 days for the foundation (something YOU WILL HAVE WITH A CONTAINER), and 5 days of the structure framing.

    • @brikka
      @brikka Před 3 lety +3

      I'd much rather NOT live in a container, other disadvantages that he didn't mention such as resonance (lack of insulation, so more $$), heating, (mid day sun will cook you inside, more $$ for insulation), they feel flimsy overall, a container was created to transport goods, not for people to live inside. But if you prefer it, to each his own!

    Great account and video! Very good idea to add the expenses, your example made me to look closely to this kind of construction system and I will probably build a working shop/garage like this. We already bought some tools :)). Thank you for your effort! Good luck and best wishes from Romania!

    This is a very expensive shed not a house. Don't get hung up on wanting to build things out of metal... it will cost you twice as much and take you twice as long!
