    Designed to allow the stadium to be used for large-scale events, the retractable pitch will be housed in six underground levels and feature an underground irrigation system and ultraviolet lighting to maintain the quality of the grass

      Yes, it's real Grass, it's basically stored in giant planters that are moved on and off the "Pitch" as needed and stored underground under UV light so the grass will still grow.@@christophermotte7532

      @@rickroll9086 Wembley just covers over their grass and kills it, then replants it from sod every time. They have a system now that allows them to do this in a week, so this is only feasible when the pitch isn't needed for anything else.

    No matter what club you are are fan of the difference between the Bernabeu and the Nou Camp is night and day. Walking up to the Bernabeu is like approaching a 5 star luxury hotel and walking up to the Nou Camp is like approaching a multi storey car park.

      @@Gavsy1874 Maybe so, but in terms of big clubs and stadium design over the last 20 years Barcelona are way behind. Going into the Nou Camp on a big match day with a full crowd you were half thinking would the stadium actually collapse under the weight.

    One of those logistical things that you just don't think about much, but there has to be a way to swap it out with the spare grass so it can recover. It would be interesting to compare the ways that this is done in different stadiums and the other ways stadiums make their central space more flexible.

      They remove the whole pitch as in like a rollover carpet (made up of smaller carpets of different sizes), and manually fixed based on certain measurements. Basically the bottom tray in the above video resting on wheels is not present and the bottom storage wouldn’t be that huge or deep below ground level to fit in whole pitch.

      I'm wondering if they couldn't just build a metal cover for the grass field. Seems like it would be a lot cheaper to move just metal than metal plus dirt. On the other hand, while it's covered, it can't be treated with light to allow it to grow back. Maybe they made the right decision for once. Didn't expect that to happen in Spain!

      You would still ruin quite a lot of the grass because it's being removed so the venue can be used to host music concerts etc. Anything placed over the top would have to be supported extremely well@@showwhite7320

      @@igbc176I’m assuming here, but it would be ensuring there is sufficient light for grass growth (other stadia use roll out lamps for that) and having a multi-use arena that doesn’t crush the grass (Arizona state wheels the lawn to the outside to achieve both, but other stadia put rubber panels over the grass to protect it during concerts and dirt track shows).

Money is only wasted when it's spent to have people do something useless like build this stadium. Or, build luxury cars. Or, make people dig a ditch and then refill it.

    1998: Vitesse Stadium 26k (NL). First football stadium in the world with a retractable roof and field.
    2001: Schalke 04 Stadium 63k (GER). Second football stadium in the world with a retractable roof and field.
    2023: Real Madrid Stadium 85k (ESP) third football stadium in the world with a retractable roof and field.
    It has been quite a long time since another football stadium with a retractable roof and field has been built.
    (This is about football stadiums and not American football)

      ​@Etatdesiege1979 USA stadiums have had retractable roofs for decades now. Isn't necessary to retract field for American football so isn't widely used. My home stadium has had retractable roof since it was built and does lots of other things also, change colors, advertisement screens built in etc. Funny to think some people think usa couldn't build this when usa has built or contributed literally almost ever single important advancement in 20th and now 21st century.😂

    Why does it need to be so deep underground? It looks like it's a very slow process to swap the grass over, you can see the way people move around when it's sped up. They got a loan during covid at 1.53% interest to do this project, a good deal compared to current rates.

      It is a brilliant move - the idea is to turn the stadium into a massive indoor complex to have events year round
      Real turn cant stand that, which is why a football stadium is basically unused real estate during most of the time.

    I would compare its [annual] maintenance cost to a superyacht at approx 20% of total cost. A technologically sophisticated apparatus using moving parts under extreme tension/friction, e.g., (Motors - hydraulics) electric consumption, watering system, super grow light system, etc. The system is a 'White Elephant'.

    why is there so little cushion between the playing surface and the structure underneath? I wonder what kind of material that is made of and hope it works ok. yes, grass is better than turf. but I think grass on top of lots of dirt is better than grass on top of some weird metal skeleton.

      Yes! And so is this newfangled nationality requirement in playing for teams representing nations. Base it all on localities, where you have to have been born there to represent the locality. Wow, just think of what a world-beater Ashington United would have been… Jackie Milburn and both the Charltons! No need for multi-million transfer fees! Jumpers as goal-posts, of course… another prudent saving to be passed on to the fans at the turnstiles. Bob a head and you’re in!

      I'd assume it is for when the stadiums are used for other activities, anything from concerts to monster trucks. Its a good way to keep the grass in good shape by avoiding those sort of things to ruin it.

    The great thing is that having a retractable underground pitch is if there's ever a stadium ban. He'll go to playing behind closed doors, send the pitch underground, and keep the fans above staring at the concrete floor while the game goes on below 😂😂 💰

    Instead of moving and storing the grass, why not just have a similar segmented, movable “patio” that moves in and is positioned over the pitch? It would have lights and irrigation on the bottom of the panels. This way the pitch is stable, doesn’t have joints and edges that might become exposed during a match.

    this is what i call considerate. in my city they have built a new
    school by putting containers one on top of another and then there
    are cars standing next to the sidewalk on a distance of 300 meters.
    i complained years ago they did not install traffic mirrors at
    some difficult intersections like there are in my fathers' village since i can remember from my childhood, but nothing happened
    in germany, high salaries of people like "europa secretary" are mor important then long term investments as the maglev train used to be

      The main issue is that you can’t have events directly set up on top the grass. That would simply damage it. They store the grass away and use the concrete slab for setting up events such as concerts, exhibitions, etc. That way the city doesn’t have to build multiple venues.

      It means they will play on a perfect pitch every game as they can just swap out bad parts of the pitch that get damaged.

    Everything about Real Madrid is a work of art, now the stadium is out of this world or should I say Galaxy ( Galactico ). But not the best squad in the world that has to go to Man City..

      Right now? I believe both are neck and neck at roster squad. This season Real Madrid youngsters are more mature plus adding Bellingham and Arda G. ,they are slightly better than last season. This season they are not depends only one striker
