- There's a lot that happens in Mortal Kombat 9. So much so. That I feel like I haven't gone through it all even after releasing 3 videos. So, I decided to talk more about it in the Aftermath video XD

My headcanon is that the rule about competing against one's own realm was added to the rules in response to Shang Tsung switching sides, which was unprecedented at the time.
Random question when MK1 comes out would we see you three (SonichaXD, Trueunderdog and The4thSnake) play against each other against each other for fun in Kombat King?
I heard somewhere that Shang Tsung was half human and half outworld so since he was two halves of both races he could pick a side on the tournament
Honestly I always just assumed the rules were along the lines of "rules for thee, not for me" since the Elder Gods are consistently displayed as goddamn idiots. So the rule is basically "no being from the invading realm may fight on the side of the defenders" rather than "no being may fight for a realm that they were not born in." Hence why Outworld can break the rules repeatedly but Earthrealm can't.
After all, why would they ever need make a rule that prevents beings from the defending realm from helping their potential invaders and oppressors? Surely even mortals aren't that short-sighted and would know what's at stake, correct? /s

I'd assume it's because he considers Johnny to be an idiot beneath him, but despite this Johnny has the one thing Shang doesn't: Sonya.

Dark Raiden was probably trying to send this message to himself right before Shao Kahn tried to merge the realms. That way he could warn himself to stop Liu Kang and let Elder Gods deal with Shao Kahn.
Unfortunately, getting beaten by a sledgehammer tend to make sending precise messages through specific moments in time a tad bit harder.
Before that Dark Raiden was Trying to Win the Battle of Armageddon. I think in another Timeline he did win.
Shang Tsung being able to fight on the behalf of Outworld is a complicated answer. The original lore was that Shang Tsung was supposed to be a demon sorcerer that only took on a human appearance. It then became confusing due to how the show MK Conquest established that he was the original Champion of Earth Realm before The Great Kung Lao. At some point in the games' original timeline, they adopted the "Shang Tsung is human" lore and I'm pretty sure made it so that Shang's soul was tethered to Shao Khan. Which I think Fourth Snake or someone else mentioned being the reason why Shang can't actually die, stands back up in Deception after his neck is snapped, and shows up in Armageddon after Raiden sacrifices himself.
So one answer is that he was never an Earth Realmer. Another answer is that he's sort of a JoJo avatar slave of Shao Khan. Another answer is that some exceptions are able to be made since Neather Realmers are allowed to fight on another realm's behalf willy nilly on a whim. But the most honest answer is that the main guy who wrote the lore hasn't been apart of the franchise since MK4, and the people that work on the games now barely give a shit about lore and continuity.... Hence why they've rebooted the franchise with time travel twice now. lol

I don’t think it’s just a question of what Raiden should have said, but rather when he should have sent the message back. Raiden sends the message back to his MK1 self, but if he had sent it to his MK3 self and the massage was “Kahn must win,” that would be a lot easier to understand. Plus, since Shao wouldn’t be suspicious of Raiden’s knowledge and likely wouldn’t have sent amped up Sindel after everyone, so there would have been more survivors.
That was something I sorta thought too. Perhaps it could only be sent to MK1. And cause it was a reboot too XD

10:00 In Lore Shang Tsung was from Earthrealm and one of its Champions but because he was the First to cheated in the Tournament as Punishment the Elder Gods Banned Him from Earthrealm and Cursed Him to rapidly Aging, in a Strange Way he’s no longer a Participant to Earthrealm and being Shao Kahn’s Champion became a Outworlder.
About Shang Tsung and the rule about only being allowed to compete for your realm of origin, IIRC that rule was put in place exactly because of Shang Tsung switching sides, having fought at least a single tournament for earthrealm and presumably winning it, given he didn't age in those 50 years in between. And given the Elder Gods couldn't prohibit him for switching sides before they made it illegal, they cursed him with accelerated aging, hence him needing to consume souls to survive.

Accelerated aging? The dude is hundreds of years old. I vaguely remember him being "cursed" with the soul-sucking thing by the Elder Gods in the first place because they're consistently idiots, especially since he would most likely be dead without it.
That's why I also just assume the rule is intentionally one-sided since Outworld gets to break it all the time.
@MusicoftheDamned if he doesn't absorb souls, he'll begin rapidly aging. So absorbing souls restores his youth. It's like a save on a video game, he just goes back to the same age when he absorb souls
Didn't Elder Gods curse Shang Tsung with aging because he actually stole a soul rather than switching side after winning the tournament, if he even fought for Earthrealm in the first place?
Also the Elder Gods have to be seriously incompetent and lazy to institute the "person fights for realm origin rule" and then ignore it with Lin Kuei. That or the writers are bad at their job.

I have a new proposition for what Raiden should have said to his past self:
"Shang Tsung must die"
Consider this: No second tournament ( because Shang Tsung wouldn't propose it to Shao Kahn ), no revenants ( because Sindel wouldn't be boosted by Shang Tsung's soul ), no zombie Liu Kang ( because Shang Tsung wouldn't snap his neck ). It's a win-win for Earthrealm all around.

10:05 I recall John Tobias said on Twitter Shang Tsung had one parent from Earth and one from Outworld. This dual lineage gave him the ability to pick which side to fight for, which is how he's able to fight for the latter, despite being born on Earth. I believe he also said this dual nature is also what allows him to be able to cross realms.
But that still doesnt matter. Because we learn Bo Rai Cho cannot fight because he is from Outworld. They say being from "insert realm" means you would be fighting for that realm.
Shangs heritage makes no difference. What matters is where you are born. Which Shang was from Earthrealm originally. So this still doesnt make any sense.
@@justinianthe1st790 keep in mind Tobias didn't work on the game that established that rule, this was the lore he had in mind from before that. It could potentially still work with that DA rule, but you'd probably have to add more on to it.
@@commanderproton7763 You would also have to make that canon outright. But the way they established it reveals your place of birth is what matters. Now Im pretty sure they completely got rid of it. Which is a good thing, because according to that rule Shang Tsung essentially gave Earthrealm its independence twice. By winning 9 times pre and post great kung lao. This is why that rule was dumb and had no business being retconed in.

It’s likely the reason he was able to fight for outworld in Mortal Kombat is likely due to the fact that his body isn’t his original body, he either took over the body of someone else and slowly changed the body’s appearance to resemble his old self or created a body using the remains of fallen outworld warriors to create this new body of his allowing him to bypass the rules do to his body technically belonging to outworld.🤔🐱

My headcanon for why characters are fighting for the opposite realm is that in order to do so, you have to “forsake/abandon” your realm. Basically, you have to no longer consider your home realm to be your home realm. I could see most, if not all of the characters who are from EarthRealm and fight for Outworld doing this, with the only exception, Cyrax, doing it anyway because it was commanded of him.
This is just speculation on my part, but I think the reason why Shang Tsung can fight for Outworld is related to the revelation in MK Armageddon that Shao Kahn owns Shang Tsung's soul. It's on Shang Tsung's Armageddon bios.

Yeah, the "break the targets" part of the _MK9_ video was my favorite part overall as someone who caught it late only a couple of weeks ago. Thanks for taking the time out to do since I can only imagine how long the 14 hours felt. I'm glad that CZcams in its whimsical hypocrisy didn't demonitize that too, though I guess the targets helped censor the lethal violence too.
Speaking of lethal violence, I always thought it seemed clear that _MK9_ Liu Kang's death was due to a backfire accidentally caused by Raiden's light shock. For all of NRS's many flaws even in just its writing, Raiden's electricity has stayed rather consistent in that he needs to use a lot of it in for a prolonged time to actually electrocute someone. So a little zap like he gave Liu Kang wouldn't have fricasseed him like he was covered in oil, hence why Raiden was so distraught when a defensive move meant to stun ended being up lethal.

I'm unsure what I have to explain here given you've asked a generic "what" that you don't seem to want an answer on two different channels now that both basically thrive off of critiquing NRS having subpar writing, for comedy in SonicHaXD's case. So what am I supposed to be explaining here, if you actually cared, that the various videos already didn't?
_MK9_ has the "best" (read: least bad) writing of the NRS games, but it still has (numerous) issues, if mainly with the third portion that simultaneouly rushes through _MK3_ yet feels slow as hell somehow until the questionable Sindel massacre. The Kabal and Stryker bit is pretty much the highlight of that section even though that doesn't last very long before poor Kabal gets burnt hilariously nonchalantly by Kintaro. Not that there aren't issues before that portion given what dunces Shang Tsung and Kitana come off as throughout _MK9_ as a whole for various reasons. Meanwhile at the same time Quan Chi gets repeatedly painted as a genius for having really shoddy plans that could have easily fallen apart beyond reviving Sindel. _MK9_ is also the start of NRS clearly having no clue what to do with either characters like the Cyber Initiative or Noob Saibot beyond just having them exist as well almost never having the villains be a threat unless you're playing as them. Etc.

People often forget that Midway was inconsistent with how the rules of the tournament worked too. For example you cant invade unless you win win all 10 victories of mortal kombat...yet Baraka and his Tarkatan horde as well as other baddies from outworld invade Earth and even kill some people before MKII begins. Or Quan Chi and Shang Tsung in MKDA plotting to take over Earthrealm with the EGs doing nothing to stop it when the MK rules say you cant just invade and conquer Earth unless you win MK.
Or the fact merging illegally isnt allowed but they let Kahn merge in UMK3. And no the sindel "loophole" (which wasnt a loophole) doesnt somehow give him legal reigns to merge earth. This is further backed up in MKT Raiden's updated N64 bio where there is no ambiguity. The elder gods specifically refused to help Raiden. The game even said Shao was breaking the rules.
Why does any of this matter? Because at the end of the day the rules were never consistent to begin with. As for Shang Tsung, yes it was confirmed that he was from earthrealm. I believe on the MKSZM website from long ago. Which thanks to Deadly Alliance's retcon of place of origin affecting tournament outcomes this suddenly becomes absurd.
Because Shang fought for Outworld anyway for a 1000 years and nobody brought this up. Not even Shang Tsung, the guy who is...fighting for Outworld. Fans try to explain this away by bringing up his Armageddon bio. Where it was revealed Shangs soul was bound to Shao Kahn. Since it was soul bound to Shao who is from outworld that means this supersedes the rules...except it doesnt.
This is not only never confirmed to be the thing that prevents Shang from giving Earthrealm Ws, but why would Shang being soul bound to Shao change his origin? Shangs soul is still very much apart of him and is still of Earthrealm origin. This also makes Shang look foolish because at no point did this potential fatal flaw ever come up in those 1000 years. He didnt know his soul was bound to Shao this entire time either.
Side note, after reading the entire Midway lore recently I can safely say it was very bad too. Retcons after retcons after retcons. Bad writing and bad worldbuilding again and again. Mostly due to the Elder Gods MKT retcon that expanded on them and revealed the rules which made the conflicts of MK2 all the way to MKA (with the exception of MK4) nonsensical. The One Being was a mistake that never should've been made too. Because he comes back via merging the realms and yet the Elder Gods allow merging. They also did nothing to get the Kamidogu back which almost destroyed all of reality.
Please be good MK1...PLEASE.
They really needed a MK rulebook. Cause EVERY tournament has a problem XD

Regarding the rules of fighters not switching to opposite sides during the tournament, that’s wasn’t something that was established when John Tobias, the true creator of MK, wrote the story. That’s something that was established during the PS2 era once they’ve introduced The One Being. Which I tend to blame Jon Vogel for. And to be brutally honestly, I don’t like cause it not only makes it too strict given the context of why certain fighters wound like to switch sides like Li Mei or Kano, and also Shang Tsung already contradicts this rule, but also it just makes the lore more complicated when before things were relatively simple & easy to understand.

If I remember right(I'll edit this if I find the source that backs this up) Shang Tsung's place of origin is never directly confirmed. Some games and media claim him to be a outworld sorcerer, while other state he was a earthrealmer who became a outworlder Armageddon and MK9 both have bios that states that Shang Tsung also binds his Soul towards Shao Khan for power, which is why he's considered from Outworld and his victors also count for them. Hope this info helps!
Honestly about the he must i have 2 things to say
1. I do think its kinda random/smart thing for dark raiden to think about this loophole for mk3. Tho there are so many other moments to choose from (first thing that comes to mind is liu kangs death in mkda)
And 2. Why did dark raiden send his vision to mk1 raiden instead of mk3 raiden ?
Edit: wouldnt it be better to send his visions to between mk4 and mkda ? I think one main reason why shao kahn won was because liu kang was a zombie (which i speculate is weaker than regular liu kang since shang tsung beat him pretty easily in mka intro).
So by stoping liu kangs death they could prepare for the deadly alliace, return of onaga and even armagedon. I think what raiden should said was: dont let liu kang die

Like as hes saying his hala bala hes winding the amulet to the past and only backwards, so maybe while he was chanting the spell he tried to think of a solution and thought of the mk3, but at that point he was already at mk1 and couldnt move back foward ? You get what i mean ?

Imagine if present-Raiden recieves the message "Kahn must merge", and then Raiden let Shao Kahn win the Outworld tournament...
At this point I would love to see someone make a rom hack of mk trilogy or separate rom hacks of MK 1,2, and 3 where Reptile is the MC and an original story is made for his character, with an outcome for him winnign or losing, and even befriending Raiden while the others like Liu Kang and Johnny Cage get pushed aside, adn Reptile has his own group of friends with own fleshed out personalities.

You should play more fighting games with reptilian characters like Riptor in Killer Instinct (1994 & 2013), Lizardman (Soul Calibur franchise), Gon (Tekken 3), and the one in the most curious to see you play which I’ve been recommending so very highly, any character from Primal Rage.

Personally, I prefer if a youtuber uploads whenever they're done rather than when they're sticking to an upload schedule because it generally means that youtuber isn't stressed or forced to put something up and the video is of an overall higher quality; even if it means that in the meantime I'm currently DYING because I've exhausted their video catalogue and I crave their content (oversimplified, internet historian, kilian experience help I'm dying)

I remember reading that Shang Tsung was banished to Outworld and turn into a demon and being reborn in Outworld to a certain extent. I remember seeing this pre Armageddon, so it might had just been just a random internet fanfic.
15:30 Personally I always believed that this happened, Raiden used a minimum of lightning to stun Liu Kang but it sparked a chain reaction because Liu kang was actually going for a killing blow and collecting a lot of fire energy, so it killed him. I never could believe that a LITERAL THUNDER GOD couldn't control his powers at all and killed his favourite pupil by accident xd And it's also fair, since Raiden has probably never attacked Liu Kang with lightning before, so he wouldn't really know if this interaction is even possible with his fire powers.
In Mk Deception Dark Raiden can be killed in his own Fatality.

Why did Kronika come to Shang Tsung when he was older like from MK9 chapter 1 through 7 or 8?
Why did Kronikas hourglass chose Past Sonya Johnny and Jax instead of replacing Johnny with Striker?
And one last thing
I would've loved to see past MK locations in MK11 because of the time distributions but this is nether realm were talking about so not gonna get many answers. We could've had all so many different fights with old and new characters.

The offscreen eliminations are a weird conundrum bc most Earthrealmers are fighting Outworlders, most are willing to kill their defeated opponents, unlike Earthrealmers. So if Sonya or whoever was defeated, there's a high chance, depending on who she fights, she'd probably be dead. My theory is that they choose Liu Kang to be their champion instead of risking more eliminations and less potential dead kombatants
I feel there should be more Orderealm and Chaosrealm Characters Too

@@hurricane7727 I don't remember him ever being stated as to have competed in a tournament. Also I don't belive him or any of the denizens of Chaos Realm would compete. A tournament is structured and has an order system. Havik and the Chaos Realmers wouldn't like that. Maybe for a chance to cause Chaos in Earthrealm after winning.

About people competing for the "wrong realm", it's not that Bo Rai Cho can't compete in the tournament, it's that if he wins, it's a victory for Outworld.
So the Lin Kuei and Kano competing in the tournament isn't really a contradiction, as long as they don't win the tournament. Shang Tsung most likely paid them to eliminate as many Earthrealm warriors as possible and then lose on purpose to eliminate themselves.
If Sub-Zero was to win the tournament, it would be an Earthrealm victory, but then the Lin Kuei don't get paid, and so why would Sub-Zero win the tournament?
Unless Raiden or fg Liu Kang hires the Lin Kuei
