Metallica - Master of Puppets (D Tuning + Remaster)

- Been a while since I've uploaded, but here's a thing
I finally learned how to make pitch shifting more natural-sounding, having no clue how kind of limited what I could do but now that I've figured it out, I have a feeling I can actually make meaningful tuning-videos and remasters. I also took the liberty of giving this song a proper remaster, since I've never been very good at it but I think I'm making progress. Added a few effects, punch-ins, and made the ending more dramatic. Expect to see some (better) And Justice for Steve videos soon!

Sounds like the first time I listened to the original song

It's that doubled C note, the last note in the riff, it sounds majestic in this tuning.
That's the famous Andy Warhol (David Bowie) riff. It does sound great!

IKR it has a really good harmony and much more better than the original

Everyone already lost their shit when they released it the way it was.
Kkkkk simmmm
From what I heard when this came out it made all other metal look like little kid shit
lol we had Darkness Descends already in 1986 and Reign in Blood and Obsessed by Cruelty among others
Lol yeah obviously, I'm a thrash listener of almost 10 years myself, but I would still say Master of Puppets was superior. Especially in terms of what amount of heaviness an unexperienced listener could digest. It's just heavy enough to get you hooked instantly and wanting to explore more of a genre, and just musical enough to not be overwhelming for your first encounter with thrash. Typical peoples' reaction going into stuff by DFA, 80's Kreator, Slayer is that of "wtf bruh that's way too extreme". 240-250 bpm thrash madness is just too much for 99% people to digest on first listen. Heck I had to get started with Metallica myself to even get used to raw brutality and energy of thrash sound. So yeah, by this standard, MOP is totally superior. And it's still not a tad less heavy than any thrashers that were on the scene in '86.
I can't be the only one who's actually tried playing it in D tuning
I normally play in A standard and can’t be fucked to tune up all 7 strings just for one song, so yeah
I promise you you're not. I haven't moved my ltd out of C in foreverrrrrr
I have played this in C# in the same place as the Eb and ummm I was not aanywhere near as good as this in D.

@@arex6240 Yeah, definitely a bit bit-crushed sounding due to some form of data compression, but it sounds good regardless. It's mostly only noticable on the guitars and drums (no surprise there.)

Bro the purple colored Master of Puppets album covers looks so good
Honestly Metallica and other Metal and Rock Bands should do what Black Sabbath did for Sabbath Bloody Sabbath with the 2 Version album artwork for Vinyls specifically.
Deep purple
That's an awesome idea. It would be a no-brainer for the artist because they're basically ensuring one person buys the same album twice at least, if not more. That's free money for them, all for just changing the color of the cover.
that album cover is absolutely beautiful. Love the haunting purple to it. great version of the song too
Deep purple?
The interlude in this version kinda reminds me of the "Mr. Crowley" solos
Well since this is pitch shifted to D, that means the root of this song is D. Considering Mr Crowley is in D minor that makes sense
Honestly Kirk’s solo sounds good in anything 😭
Funny: actually they recorded this song in D and slower at studio, and then pitched it to E accelerating the tape to get a tighter final sound. BTW: your proposal for the song finale is really great, dude; thanx! 🎸🎵🎶
Also, imagine if this was released today, like the notes and general structure of this song is the 80’s, yet my god it’s still so much better than anything being put out now

🤘🏼💀🤘🏼
This is the best remaster of this song yet. The way the interludes concludes the song as it fades out is beautiful.
Like the song never ends, mirroring the addiction that the "master of puppets" is putting on the addict in the song.
There is no happy ending, the addict is doomed at getting drugged, disapointed, then lured back into the drug by
the "master". Even If I'm sure this isn't what the author wanted to say, it just works so well and makes the song imo
a lot sadder.
I think it sounds pretty awesome, particularly the guitars; however, I think it objectively sounds better in standard. It’s sharper and more intense, particularly the vocals. I will say though that the interlude sounds EXCELLENT this way, really dark and somber. Overall though, great work! Very interesting to hear. 🤘🏼
Yeah the interlude sounds 👌 🔥 this way. And with the purple backdrop looking at it hearing the music seems perfect.

@@donovansweeney9114 lmao “why did you watch it” how else would he form an opinion on it, got a brain there?
You simply MUST tell me how you did this
Certainly good lad, the technique's called formant shifting, and in short it changes the frequencies and tone of a sound based on the pitch. The way I did this in specifc is by using the ReaPitch plugin that's built into Reaper, it's a pretty normal pitch shifting VST. At the bottom of the plugin's UI is a section for formant shift, all you do is reverse whatever you did to change the pitch. E.G. I used the normal pitch shifting section to go *down* 2 semitones, and then I shifted the formant UP 2 semitones
Oh its you, hi
@@mctwishvonnoodles9793 did you do that (up 2 semitones on the formants) on all tracks or just the vocals?
Audacity, pitch shift does the same thing if Im not mistaken
u can do this even with a mobile app
Actually, effects that you added make this song better. From now this is my favourite version of MoP among all of the remasters and covers.
man i love the interlude at the end it is an amazing arrangement my dude
Cliff sounds amazing
That’s just kinda a given, anything he does will sound good
This feels like listening to it for the first time again, Love it!
It's a little weird at first because I am used to hearing recordings of this song detuned with James' modern, cleaner voice. The interlude and solos sound insane though. Wish I could try the good pitch shift myself, there are a ton of songs I want to mess around with.
Man this is insane too heavy feels good
If there's one thing I learned with formant shifting, it's to NOT use it on high pitched instruments (solo guitar, violins, flute, high sopranos, etc.) Formant shift attempts to hold upper frequencies in place while changing the lower frequencies. That's how James still mostly sounds like himself here, even though the recording has been pitch shifted. Now, consider the overtone series and the frequencies humans can hear. There are a lot of overtones that we can hear with lower notes, potentially dozens based on their pitch/frequency. For example, the pitch of the open A string on the guitar is 110 Hz (this is its fundamental pitch). Open A on a guitar also produces 220Hz, 330Hz, 440Hz etc at steadily decreasing volumes (the way different instruments sound different while playing the same note is based on how different the volume of each of these overtones are). Humans hear up to 15-20,000Hz. There's roughly 150 overtones for the A string that are audible!
Now think of higher pitches (like the guitar solos in this song). Do you hear the original pitch of the solo underneath the up front, D-tuned solo? That's because formant shifting is holding the upper frequencies...problem is that the overtone series of higher pitches quickly reach these high frequencies that are held to the original tuning of the recording. Think of the high "A" that's produced on the high E string. Its fundamental pitch is 880Hz. The human ear can only hear roughly 20 of its overtones. A higher proportion of the overtone series is within the range of frequencies that formant shifting holds to its original recording. It's upper range of the overtone series os audible enough that it creates the illusion of the original solo playing underneath the solo you hear in this video, even though the actual original fundamental pitch isn't there. In this case, I can hear the guitar solo constantly played with full-tone/major second intervals on every note throughout the solos, especially the higher pitched parts....
So yeah, if you read my essay and actually understand the music/audio physics jargon, now you know why the solos sound like it does, and why you shouldn't formant shift high pitches!
But here me out: it sounds sick as fuck
Metallica is going to play their songs soon that way when James’s vocal will be fucked up to that level that they will have to tune from d# do standard D
One day James's vocals will turn out like Dave's
