Why does Angelina sing barefooted? Angelina Jordan is known as "The Barefoot Princess" or "The Barefoot Princess of Jazz," amongst many other names. She always performs barefooted, whether in front of a live audience or during a studio performance. The story is that while living in the Middle East, at 6 years old, Angelina came across an orphaned girl, of her own age, sitting in the street, weighing people on a bathroom scale to earn money. Angelina said to herself, "I would like to share her life for one second to know what it is like to sit alone, wet, and damp, and barefoot in a corner of the street." Angelina could see the girl's bare feet were scarred and that it was cold outside, so she offered her own shoes to the girl. Little Angelina says that she really loved her shoes, as they were very nice and she knew she would miss them. But she saw the other little girl’s need for them, which outweighed her own desire to keep them. So she insisted the little girl take them.
Angelina called her Princess, even though the girl said she didn't live in a castle, but the ruins of a building next to where she sat. After sharing their hopes and dreams, the little girl said of Angelina's wish to sing for the world, "You will become the one you dream of and when your dreams come true, you have to remember the poor children without shoes; and I will pray for you Angelina.” Later that day, 6 y/o Angelina wrote in her diary, "The world is very strange. Right then and there, I felt as if a door in my heart opened up, and it was filled with lots of lights. It was as if there was, from Earth to Heaven, a staircase. I climbed the stairs. To be able to do something for another human - it was such a big thing…hard to describe really.”
From that point on, Angelina takes off her shoes, in honor of ‘Princess’ and all the other less fortunate children of the world, who are orphaned, hungry, or in want of even basic clothing. In 2015, at the age of 9, Angelina wrote a book about the encounter, as everyone continued to ask why she sang barefoot. Her grandmother, Mery Zamani, created the artwork for the book. So at 9, Angelina Jordan became the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina has performed alongside many other artists, raising attention and helping to raise over 21 million euros and millions of dollars for children in need.
Whan she was singing, I called my wife into the room and said " It just might be the best singer on the planet is a 13 year old girl from Norway.

For those who did not know: The performance of her arrangement of Queen’s, Bohemian Rhapsody, on America's Got Talent, helped launch her international singing career...Again.
Angelina Jordan the 13-year-old from Norway sang an understated abridged version of the epic song on impressing the audience, judges and the band itself. The following morning, Queen retweeted the show’s official account adding "Wow! What a rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody! Absolutely killed it! 🤯" In an unprecedented move, Queen gave her the full copyright to record her arrangement. "Heidi Klum hit the Golden Buzzer that sent Jordan on to the next round. 😇🌺
The best praise came from the band Queen itself, which gave her the recording rights to this version.

Sir, welcome to the world of Angelina Jordan. Angelina Jordan is a Jazz singer since age 3 and practices since then for 36 hours weekly. You will find a lot to wonder and more to be amazed. By the way her voice was given to her by a higher power, if you will. Many got that gift, but could not put it to good use. Today at age 17 she is a highly respected artist with Republic Records and as she finished Highschool, she will start through.

Not only did Angelina get the golden buzzer from judge Heidi Klum, but she also received huge praise from the remaining members of the legendary Queen. Queen were delighted with Angelina's arrangement and shared it on Twitter with the words "WOW, what a rendition" (three years later they repeated their praise on TT in March 2023 with the words "absolutely killed it".) 8 years I have listened every day. Right from the first time I saw a beautiful little girl in a white dress, flowers in her hair, on my favourite series at the time Lillyhammer. In the scene she is singing in the background in the jazz club my favourite Bilie Holiday song. The effect on me was so dramatic I researched who she was. Only to find her Norways Got Talent run. Then her large outdoor concert with backing singers, singing WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKE . I was hooked. Only to spend the next years surprised, enthralled and addicted. I never could predict her. Then I started enjoying watch others experience what I have. No other solo artist can do that to me.

Alex, I am embarrassed to admit, that when I listened to this as my introduction to Angelina Jordan in 2020, I thought (in my ignorance) her whispered opening meant that she was going to sing Bohemian Rhapsody in the style of a "ukelele girl". Wow, am I glad I was oh so wrong!

Angelina Jordan found her purpose in life early. 7 years-old early. Winning Norway’s Got Talent at that tender age only solidified what the headstrong young singer knew she wanted to do with her life. CZcams footage of her singing Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You at the age of one-and-a-half suggests her path has been clear right from the start. Now with her signing to Republic Records, the teen singer can fulfill the next chapter of her destiny.
Even being so young, I’ve always known what I wanted,” she tells American Songwriter. “I found my purpose, it is to be a musician.” The singer, who was born and raised in Oslo but is now based in Los Angeles, was just 7 when her audition for the 2014 season of Norway’s Got Talent went viral. Her version of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday” captured over 300 million views, and set her on a path that’s changed her life. Even being eliminated from the American version of the reality show, in February this year, hasn’t stopped her star from rising.
After being courted by a number of record labels, Jordan signed with Republic, and has just released her debut single, “Million Miles.” “From the very beginning of my career, I had offers to be signed, but my family and I wanted to wait and develop my talent for the right time,” she says, revealing a patience that belies her youth. “I knew at a very early age that in order for me to accomplish bigger things in my life, I had to wait in order to make sure I created something meaningful. I chose Republic because I feel I have a long career with them. When I was finishing the song in the studio, one of the producers played the song for [founder and CEO] Monte Lipman. Following her stint on Got Talent, Jordan has shared a number of cover versions of her favorite songs, so releasing a debut single all of her own is a momentous occasion. “Million Miles” is a piano ballad about losing love that showcases her beautiful range. “The song is really about everyone and reminding us that we are never alone because we as humans, our biggest fear as human beings are that we are very afraid of being alone or losing someone,” she says. Produced by Grammy-winning production duo Stargate (), the track was written by Jordan herself.
“I have been writing a lot of songs, but I decided on this song because of a feeling it gave me. I’ve never felt that feeling before. When I write a song, it is mostly from my experiences. Music for me has always been my passion. It’s been clear to me what kind of music I want to make. With this song, when I created the melody and lyrics, it started out totally different than what it turned out to be. It felt like something was guiding me in the studio,” she says. “What is so special about working with such a producer as Stargate is that I feel so comfortable. They understand my music and from the moment I met them, we had that chemistry to make the songs. That’s the most important thing, I believe. It feels like something was guiding me to be able to write this song. I think everybody in the studio was aware that something magical was happening.”
Jordan felt that even while recording the song. “When I was in the booth, while I was singing, my tears were running,” she says. “To be honest, it was like a feeling of relief that all my feelings were written down and I felt relieved. “Million Miles” means a lot to me because it is relevant to these difficult times. I definitely want to share my love to everyone, and I hope that people can connect with it and relate to the story behind the song.”

Even with her own music now being released, Jordan still enjoys the covers she sings. “I do appreciate the love I get when I sing those legendary songs. It is harder to sing a cover than your own song because you are going to be compared to the original. It is a big responsibility to make sure you are placing the worth into it,” she says. “I have learned that we humans have unlimited ability, that we can do anything we want, just if we want to. I always keep that in my mind with cover songs or anything I do.”

Two things have kept the brakes on Angelina's career... the pandemic hit just a few months after this performance aired on TV, and she and her parents agreed that they would not seriously promote her until she graduated high school. That's happening this month so we should be hearing much more from her VERY soon.

Angelina is a Norwegian born child prodigy in music. She's a singer/ songwriter who's arranged over 180 covers and 6 originals, all since the age of 7. Angelina began singing at 18 months old. At 2, she began teaching herself how to sing, focusing primarily on the jazz masters of decades gone by. These are artists such as Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Etta James. She's also influenced by Amy Winehouse, Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, and Adele, to name a few. She's also been said to be the girl of 1,000 voices. Yet even though we can hear the phrasing and style she puts in the songs, it's always Angelina that we hear.
At 7 years old, she auditioned for Norway's Got Talent. She was the last to audition. The judges had no idea who she was or what she could do. They saw a diminutive mussy haired, barefooted girl with her teeth still growing in. For her audition, she performed "Gloomy Sunday" from Billie Holiday. On TV-2, they've reported over 14 million views of this performance. This does not take into account the many hundreds of reactors showing this audition to millions more.
Needless to say, Angelina went on to win the 2014 season of NGT shortly after her 8th birthday. The family was bombarded with requests for performances, interviews, and record label offers. They turned down 90% of the requests, as they insisted that Angelina should enjoy a normal childhood.
That didn't stop Angelina from performing at select engagements around the world, singing for Heads of State, and even Barack Obama. She's spent time and worked with musicians such as Quincy Jones and Alan Walker. She first appeared on American television, The View, at 8 years old.
Angelina auditioned for America's Got Talent The Champions at 13 years old. She made it just up to the final selection of the final 5 when she dropped from the competition. Some attribute this to her refusal to sign with an AGT affiliated label, should she win. She knew very well what production hungry labels could do to her music.
At 14, Angelina signed with Republic Records. Republic gave her complete artistic control as well as control over the performances she would make. She turned 17 on January 10, 2023, and will graduate from high school after the spring semester. From then on, she will embark on her full-time professional career.

Two of my favorite performances are "Lovin' You" that she performed live at age 11 and at age 12 "Fly Me to the Moon" that she performed at Quincy Jones 85th birthday celebration concert at there O2 Arena in London. She rehearsal video for that concert is terrific. She sings the arrangement that Jones did for Frank Sinatra and the Count Basie band. She sings it so much better than Sinatra, and I like Sinatra!!!!

Welcome to “The World Of Angelina Jordan Astar” (full name). “The Barefoot Princess With The Velvet Voice And A Mona Lisa Smile”. Born Jan 10, 2006 in Oslo Norway. From her audition on Norway’s Got Talent (2014 - age 7 - Gloomy Sunday "Billy Holiday") through the final on America’s Got Talent The Champions (2020 - age 13 - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road "Sir Elton John") and the 130+ videos in between you will not be disappointed. This includes three originals song: “What Is Life”, “Oslo” and “Shield” Since then she has done many new covers and now her new singles "Million Miles" and “7th Heaven”, along with her movie soundtrack "Mercy" from the motion picture “The Hating Game”. As well as her brilliant version of Elvis’s “Suspicious Mind”. My personal favorite is her cover of Lana Del Rey's "Born To Die". Although “Mercy” is really growing on me.

There is 'something' beyond normal with this kid. I'm a tuff guy, more than 60, seen a lot and yet she reduces me to tears. What the heck"?

You see her doing that at the beginning of the video. She performs bare foot because she traveled to a 3rd world country when she saw a young girl with no shoes on. She asked the girl where her shoes where? The little girl said she has never had any shoes in her whole life! Angelina took her shoes off and gave them the little girl! What an Angle! It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener. Why Angelina always performs barefoot
At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are.
Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes.
Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true.
Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East.
